Wow it would be tough to give birth in front of such a crowd of people making noise and staring. I was thankful to not see humans rushing in but that the other giraffes were coming around and giving support. Thanks for sharing!
It is not dead and the mother will kick the calf to make sure it can stand and repeat this process until it knows it remembers the calf can stand on its own

whoa! that was crazy and cool. I kind of surprised that they would just have their babies out in the open like that. I know that's what they would do in the wild but i thought the might get pampared so by the zoo keepers. What what the baby Giraffe named? was it male or female?
Our zookeepers only get involved in the births if there is a problem. Otherwise, it isn't uncommon for the births to happen during the day when guests are in the park. And, this was a female calf named Lexi.

Most animals are prey, so to yell out is bad because it attracts attention to you and your newborn from predators, plus generally the skull size of a human baby is so much larger than that of any animal relative to the size of the mother, so her cervix has to undergo such a greater amount of brachystasis (the painful part where the cervix contracts and stays open for the baby to pass out) than other animals. :)
