But most likely he suffered from Multiple Personality Disorder. Which makes it that he could be romantic and easy to be around with if he were a real person as long as he was being treated for Multiple Personality Disorder. Personally with all these flaws I still love the Phantom ^_^ and wish he were real.

In the book, the Phantom had an aura about him. Like, you could tell just from the sight of him that there was something ghastly and dangerous about him (even when he was masked). His presence was that strong. Even if they didn't know he was the phantom they still could feel he was an unwelcome guest (much like the Red Death in Poe's short story).
