Now I'm a mad John Mayer fan, and am completely in awe by his skills on a six string....but it seems like he's trying to put way too much into his licks. I think he needs to take a leaf out the King's book and play fewer, but sonically amazing notes....LESS IS MORE XD

@iFleenor5 i live in Fairfield the town he grew up in and have talked to MANY people who say he was a cocky arrogant ass when he was in school and he showed up to the high school reunion and acted like an ass and what not. my brother has met and talked to him. interviews are one thing he now just talks down to people and i dont dig that at all. gotta be humble and have respect look at B.B. King he could have a huge ego but he is the most humble person ever.

Nick Jonas has the talent, and he is more than capable of becoming great, but he fucked it up by doing these shitty kids songs. You may go "but Mayer did pop at first too?" yeah but Mayer did it in a way where it was complicated and lyrically relateable - this means that one: he earned respect from not only girls (like Nick Jonas) but guitarists too because he showed his skills. John said himself in an interview that he felt the first album was about impressing, with Heavier Things he relaxed!
@roncbllo i know that mayer can play have skills and taste, but to me he can't behave correctly in some circumstances. He should be more carefull and show more respect for what blues is. Blues is not a matter of technical skills at all. It's soul and it's tradition, check it out.
BB King feels uncomfortable here and can't play exactly for that attitude. A milk smelling kid like mayer can't go call the solo of BB king you know and expect him to play it well
I love the contrast between the ancient king of the bluesmen and the up and comer...BB just has a guitar and an amp, but Mayer has his two rocks and rack mounts and a billion pedals...just let the...well, good times roll i suppose

John may have held back, but he's still not the greatest guitarist in the world, not by a long shot. John Petrucci is a Berklee educated guitarist. There is no universal rule that being technically proficient means you don't have excellent phrasing or you can't play with emotion. John Petrucci would out compose the shit out of these kids too. Show me one blues song in 7/8 with a non-diatonic minor key progression..."Playing what you feel" is a cop out for writing repetitious music.
@mtetification John Petrucci is an amazing guitar player, but you should know too, that his style is way diferent than the style of BB and Mayer, these guys are blues gods, petrucci is really technical, but dont forget mayer was also berklee educated and dropped out. Music is of playing what you feel, it will have no sense once you do it for fame or really hard just to impress.

Mayer held back bigtime. He's a modest guy (well not really...) but he needs to take charge and show everybody that he's the best guitarist in the world - by far.

@roncbllo i know that mayer can play have skills and taste, but to me he can't behave correctly in some circumstances. He should be more carefull and show more respect for what blues is. Blues is not a matter of technical skills at all. It's soul and it's tradition, check it out.
BB King feels uncomfortable here and can't play exactly for that attitude. A milk smelling kid like mayer can't go call the solo of BB king you know and expect him to play it well

I love the contrast between the ancient king of the bluesmen and the up and comer...BB just has a guitar and an amp, but Mayer has his two rocks and rack mounts and a billion pedals...just let the...well, good times roll i suppose

I think the biggest reason that BB, Clapton, Guy, etc, etc, love to play with Mayer, is cause they see that he is probably gonna be the one who will continue this beautiful style of music when they're gone!

this whole video is just two greats of different generations giving the finger to the crappy pulp that clogs up the music industry today. John may not be remembered in the same way as BB but still people will remember him for alot more time than those jonas lads

John may have held back, but he's still not the greatest guitarist in the world, not by a long shot. John Petrucci is a Berklee educated guitarist. There is no universal rule that being technically proficient means you don't have excellent phrasing or you can't play with emotion. John Petrucci would out compose the shit out of these kids too. Show me one blues song in 7/8 with a non-diatonic minor key progression..."Playing what you feel" is a cop out for writing repetitious music.

@mtetification John Petrucci is an amazing guitar player, but you should know too, that his style is way diferent than the style of BB and Mayer, these guys are blues gods, petrucci is really technical, but dont forget mayer was also berklee educated and dropped out. Music is of playing what you feel, it will have no sense once you do it for fame or really hard just to impress.

you can't compare guitarist with different styles... its like comparing the best football player to the best basketball player and trying to see who the better athlete is..

It writes the rules, then purposefully breaks them. Adversely, listen to Bob Dylan...he wasn't complicated, but still wrote and played meaningful songs. Your logic is absent of logic. Do yourself a favor, get down off your pedestal that you have found yourself on because you read literature on music and LISTEN rather than dissect.
