Eddie cheever could have been the best american f1 driver. if renault didn't use him as a second driver in 1983 i'm sure if he whould have got the same matertal as prost he whould have won races and become a champion in future.
We (the USA) need another guy like Eddie to get his foot through the door in F1. . .A good, decent, respectable driver with some favorable results and a couple of podiums perhaps. Could get F1 more popular here in the states again. Just a start you know. . .
Cheever did a heck of a lot better in F1 than Michael Andretti did with decidedly inferior machinery.
And, by the way, Cheever would have won the 1992 Indy 500 over Al Unser Jr. if he hadn't had two punctured tires during that race. The laptimes bear that out.
Good driver, but only had a competitive ride in 83. If his Renault RE40 would have been as reliable as Prost's he would have bagged at least 40 points that season
Right, but to be perfectly fair, Prost's RE40 was always more reliable than Cheever's. Renault basically ran a one man show in '83, just like Lotus did with Senna after De Angelis left the team.
True. However Johnny Dumfries was a son of a rich man, and never lived up to his promise. Save for his LeMans win he is remembered for little. Satoru Nakajima came with the Honda engine deal (since Williams refused to use him in one of their cars McLaren got the Honda engine from 1988 onwards) and was decent.
Cheever did well with the 1988 Arrows, which was the best ever year for that team.
Of course, the "Andretti Curse" at Indy is well known, but when Michael joined McLaren full-time, it was starting to go into it's down period after Honda left the team following the '92 season and just could not get to grips with some circuits and the technology of F1 compared to his days in Indy cars. As I said about Cheever, other than 1960 world champion Phil Hill and '78 champ Mario, one of the best drivers to represent the United States who always was in position to score points.
The success and popularity of F1 in USA is severely dependant on having a succesful driver and a Grand Prix. USF1 could help immensely, but right now there's no American driver who has what it takes to be succesful in F1. Part of why Eddie Cheever was so good was that he got most of his racing 'education' in Italy. There needs to be an American driver who isn't afraind to approach things in a non-American way, while still retaining the American winner mentality.
Dan Gurney was better than both Phil Hill and Mario Andretti in my mind.
Jim Clark, who was the most successful F1 driver of the 60's admitted to his own father that he didn't fear Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill, John Surtess, Jack Brabham as much as he feared Dan Gurney would one day sit in a competitive car.
Dan Gurney won Brabham's first race, beating his 3 time champion team mate Jack Brabham. Also Porsche's only F1 win and Eagle's only F1 win.
yeah because he drove a number of those years when it was purely irl drivers only from the period of 1996-2000. Andretti curse or no Andretti curse, I bet Michael would have won at least one indy during that time period when the competition was a joke in the early IRL years
Luck aside, Eddie Cheever did have a modest career in F1 and represented the USA well. His helmet design is one of the coolest of all time and inspired Anthony Davidson to design his helmet in the same style, but different from Eddie's.

@tbirderic
Yeah, and Renault would rightfully have won that year's Constructors' title. Unreliability robbed Prost of the 1983 Drivers' title.

Great Tribute!
Eddie has a much better record in Indy 500 and F1 than Michael Andretti.

Go go Cheever. He may never have won a race in F1 but he did win the Indianapolis 500 later. Not a bad consolation price...
Cheever did well with the 1988 Arrows. It was reasonably competitive.
