Are there any other ways to creat angel wings, we need probaly 3 or 4 for our play we're doing. We're in Odyssey of the Mind and our budget is $125. We only got our script down and I was hoping to work on the scene and props. The wings are one of them
I am also using the LED , low power battery powered holiday decoration light strings and will be built and hidden into the tubing and wire supporting structures so that the wings will be illuminated in the daytime for a very interesting effect and night time for safety of children or adults running about after dark can easily be seen .
The 3 volt battery packs using C or D sized batteries can be hidden within the costume or in the wing bracing at the mounting points at the back.
I thought about using to copper tubing but if it gets bent it is difficult to get the shape back so the covering material is tight again.
I elected to use the 1/4" PEX plastic tubing for the smaller "veins" going out from the base. I found it at a home improvement store like Homes Depot , Menards , Lowe's etc. It is used for plumbing in the ice makers on refrigerators.
It is very tough , flexible and springs back unless you heat it with a heat gun .
@2009mechanic Unfortunately, plastic tubing cannot support the heavy weight of feathers (unless the wings are quite small). However, I am sure it will work just fine for fairy wings. Clothing hangers also work great on fairy wings. Good luck with your project! (:
Hi, I watched your tutrorial, and I'm very interested in making several med and small ones, can you give me some suggestions on size and kinds of feathers to use.
Well, I'm not sure what your definitions of "small" and "medium" are, but for the medium wings, you could still possibly go with Turkey feathers. It just depends how large the wings are going to be. Turkey feathers are 10-12", so if that seems too long, then you'll want to go with Duck feathers. Duck Pointer feathers are usually 6-9". You could do Goose feathers, too, but those are a lot more expensive than Duck feathers.
Hi! your wings tutorials r intuitive and informative! Just 1 qn though, instead of chicken wire, is it ok to use cardboard instead for the wings portion? thanks!
I've seen boas like the ones you used a Michaels, so if I were to get some and they were too short, what would be a good way to attach them together? Would hot-glueing the ends work?
Thanks for posting the video though - it was really helpful, since I had been wondering what I could use for framing :D
"The picture of my niece at the beginning of the tutorial obviously reflects small wings made with goose feathers. These feathers actually came from my parents' geese (I collected them as they molted over the summer), so I'm not positive on the amounts. There were about 30-40 Rounds on each wing and 40-50 Flats on each wing."
I don't have them to measure them (since they belong to my niece), but I'd say they're about 12-15 inches on EACH wing.
For the wings in this video, about $80.00. For the smaller wings in the photo of the baby at the very beginning of the video, those feathers would cost about $30.00.
You can. However, I highly advise against it. You will spend more than twice the amount of money buying packs of feathers from Hobby Lobby. Trust me; I did the research. :\
Hmm, well, you wouldn't be able to get all of the supplies in those stores. You'd have to get the chicken wire fencing and copper tubing at a hardware store, such as Home Depot or Lowe's. You can get a 25ft. roll of chicken wire for like $10.00, and you certainly wouldn't need that many feet. However, I don't remember if they sell smaller rolls or not. The copper tubing cost will depend on the diameter size you get (dependent upon the size of wings you're making).
A 10ft. roll of 1/4" copper tubing (the size for small wings) was around $15.00 if I recall correctly. The feathers, you will have to order (via the links in the video). You could get the duct tape, fabric, scissors, hot glue, etc. at Michael's, etc. You could probably get all of that for under $20.00, but you might already have some of it at your house (scissors, duct tape, for example). If there's something more specific you're needing to know, feel free to ask. (:
This might come in handy later on, although i'll have to use paper instead of feathers. (is contemplating doing a paper master from the ROD series). Very nice and clear instructions you give out.

The 1/2" hardware cloth or screen mesh is also available in plastic not just the metal so it can be safer and not cut you.
A hot melt glue gun would work well for putting it together.
I am using the different colors of Mylar film found on rolls at a Joanne Fabrics store.
The reflective film (non clear) I found using one of those survival
"space blankets" in the camping section of an outdoor sports store.
The plastic mesh I put between the Veins to give it some strength and not puncture Film.

@omgitshikaru
Yes , I am very well aware of the structural strength of the 1/4" PEX plastic plumbing tubing .
As was stated in my second post I am not covering it with feathers but with see through colored plastic film .
It is to be used with children so it has to be safe , durable , light weight and have the ability to spring back into shape when hit or struck.
The colored see through plastic film panels will get glued into each section in the wings for sunlight to go through in daytime.

@NintendoNads Yes. (:

Is there a way to hide the harness, if you're wearing these without a shirt?

How do you hide the harness? Esp if a guy is wearing these without a shirt?

@joyeuse13 There's no way to hide the harness if you don't have a shirt on.

My sister wants to make small wings like at the beginning of your video.
What I wanted to know was there anything in specific I should change (like amount of feathers, type of feathers, things like that) to help help her.
And about how long, from wingtip to wingtip, are the small wings?
Thanks. Your video was awesome.

Here's the info on the small wings:
"The picture of my niece at the beginning of the tutorial obviously reflects small wings made with goose feathers.
