Yes, the display is from a PC inside Loki. Finally moved to Win7, need to update with a new video (not enough time!). The Video you see is what Loki sees from his eyes. He uses this for vision processing, such as face recognition and object recognition.
Hey, I once gave a lot of tries at making a robot before, but it's really simple. Just some navigation, voice recogniztion, object avoidance etc. I'm just 16 now (did the robot when I was 14) but anyway, I had a lot of trouble getting the arduinos and PICs to work. And the only option I was left with (atleast at that time) was to put a computer inside and control it with parallel ports. Luckily, I found a really old laptop which have those. Anyway, where did you get the info on PICs? I'd love to
Regarding programming: The PC code is in C++, and the code running on the PIC microprocessor is in C. I have some Basic Stamps, but did not use any on this project.
Regarding cost: Must of the hardware was salvaged from other projects and I get a lot of stuff from ebay and my local surplus store. But, I'd guess Loki would cost about $2,000 from scratch as he is now.
Hi dshinseI007! You are freaking awesome! I am so impressed! May i ask what kind of education you have? electro engineering? computer engineering? Plz answer.
My degrees are in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, but that was a long time ago. I am a manager at Intel, and work on Loki to keep up on technology (and because it's fun). :-) For some really smart, advance stuff, check out Willow Garage!
How does Loki determine what to say in his Conversation mode? Did you set up a data base of possible responses, or does he use the internet to look up a question, and try and determine the best response?
I am so impressed and envious! I am also so very interested in your project, great respect for your accomplishments. I too build home-brew robots as a hobby, and you dropped my jaw with yours! I have been studying your work via your internet site...would love to hear Loki with the Odyssey Hal voice calling you Dave! Keep it up and thank you for being so giving of your work. -Edmond S. aus Germany
psychogod is right. I was just talking to Loki. Loki has 2 AI (artificial Intelegence) modes; a "command mode", where is responses are fairly constrained, and a "conversation mode", where you never know what he will say or do. This video is mostly in "command mode". Search for
"Loki Robot 1" to here more of his conversation mode...
Remember that this is just a hobby robot, that I built in my spare time. :-)

Quick question, what is the programming software you use? Also, is there any stamp 2 interface on board?

This robot is absolutely phenomenal. It reminds me of the robot from "Short Circuit." More videos please!

Hey is it true that all loki is is a computer with weels and a couple of programs. Not to be rude or anything.
sublimeisthecoolest 1 year ago
Yes, no offense taken. :-)
Loki is computer-based, using a laptop.
He also has 6 interface circuit boards, 20 sensors, 2 web cams, 11 servos, 2 motor controllers, and 70,000 lines of custom software.
dshinsel007 1 year ago 5
@dshinsel007
There all Finished, and it only took 7 Million lines of basic XD
No offense. This project is awesome, im so jelious. Do you ever take loki to any shows etc?

Nice, how did you make his neck?
sunjaebassman 2 years ago
Loki's neck is made up of 3 servos: Pan, Tilt, and Side Tilt. Surounding the servos is an alumimun framework.

ok... would have helped in the beginning if the operator would sit further away from the camera so you wont hear the command inputs!
mg03nma 2 years ago
Glad you can heard the inputs, because I was pretty sure he wasn't typing anything. Actually I am sure he wasn't doing anything except interacting.
