Per was active in a time when many of his opponents cheated. In order to keep up with them, he probably trained harder than anyone. When he came to the Salt Lake Olympics in 2002 he had upped the training dose to a hellish level with the one goal to win a gold medel. Muhlegg came to the olympics prepped with nesp (some second generation epo) and the way he skiied was nothing more than inhuman.
In the first race of those olympics (30km) Muhlegg immediately set up a furious pace. Per was the only one able to follow, convinced that Muhlegg had started far too optimistically...but Muhlegg was never even close to tiring and in one of the heavy climbs Elofsson totally hit "the wall". After that Elofsson never truly recovered (even if he won another wc gold medal the year after). His body just stopped responding to the training dose: He immediately became sick when training.
Per himself has denied that his collapse was the result of that single race. He believes that the combination of the massive "outside" attention and the heavy training dose he had been doing pushed his body over the edge. No matter what: That all climaxed in the first race of the 2002 olympics. All his career; Per had trained to defeat cheating competitors...and sucessfully so. All but the one who pushed him over the edge, the worst cheater of the olympics so far, Johann Muhlegg.
@albertaberg That's just nonsense. Brå haha :) The others can be disputed but I think Elofsson improved on Daehlie's technique. That's why he managed to beat him.
@LimesNorrlandicus Well, I meant that Brå was bigger than him, not a better skater of course, because he didn´t do that, but if a skier can be called "the best ever" or one of them, he should at least have an individual olympic gold medal. Elofsson does not. His only medal is the bronze from 2002 on the 10+10. Elofsson was good, but Dæhlie was waaaaaaaaaaaaay better. WAAAAAY better. Saying that he isn´t is nonsense
@albertaberg Don't you know what happened to Elofsson? He had to quit because he trained too hard to keep up with his competitors that were using doping. If that had not happened he would've won many more medals for sure.
@LimesNorrlandicus Wow, that is maybe the stupidest thing I have ever read :P Your argument is so childish it embarasses me. So let me get this straight, by "competitors" you mean that everyone except him were using doping? What about Alsgaard, Estil, Teichmann, Angerer, Svartedal, Veerpalu and Valbusa? Are you really so naive that you think everyone was using drugs just because Mühlegg did it in the olympics? I think you need to embrace the fact that Elofsson was not the God you want him to be.
@albertaberg Of course they were not using doping. I´m talking about Muhlegg and the Finns like Isometsä etc. No one has proved that Estil, Teichmann or the others you mentioned have ever used doping so I would never make such a statement.
@LimesNorrlandicus Plus, Dæhlie had 46 wins in the world cup. How many did Elofsson have? 11 :) Elofsson the best ever? Dumbest thing I have read this year.
@albertaberg Best skating technique is not the same as having the most impressive career ever, which Daehlie has (Northug is closing in on him). You should check out GundeWassbergs channel and see the race when Elofsson crushed Isometsä (who lost his medal after the race due to blood doping). I think Elofsson had more flow in his technique than Daehlie, even though their technique was similar.
@sizzzza Mühlegg? This guy trained to hard, thats all. And he isnt the best, but one of the best. Look up Ole Einar Bjørndalen for a perfect skate-technique

Kids at home: look at how forward his hips are on the recovery. Try to do this.

Joz4 did you look at the timer in the corner, he's been skiing that fast for nearly an hour

He is the best ever, no doubt! Such a shame that Mühlegg destroyed his career.

What do you mean by this? How Muehlegg could destroy career of Per?

@albertaberg Definitely right up there. Maybe he has the best skating technique ever.

@LimesNorrlandicus I strongly disagree. A few that were better: Dæhlie, Smirnov, Aalsgaard and Brå. Plus, Bjørndalen has a better technique than him
