I like how Metallica refuses to give any explanation on what happened. It's not the songs that suck, but the lack of/over use of production makes them painful to listen to. I can't tell how many songs I like, but the loudness race has me looking for anything to stop the madness.

HOW could anyone in the music industry listen to this and think a professional recorded (mixed / mastered) it? It is 2011........HOW can ANYONE make sound this poorly??? o_O
@Karoke77 it's not made poorly, it's made on purpose. they wanted the mastering engineer to make this sound by Limiting the Sound over the top. What you hear as "poorly sound" is the clipping that comes with that.

how the hell can the new LULU record sounds like Load and Reload, yet the official Metallica album Death Magnetic sound (as you hear while this video play) pushed way to hard mix wise and clip when the distortion kicks in. Such a weird production fiasco
Okay, the CD version was mostly muted, compared to the Guitar Hero version, but I wasn't expecting the HORRIBLE DISTORTION at the end of the CD's example. Jesus Christ, how did they screw it up that badly.
Shit like this is exactly why I believe I should be in the business of music production and mixing. I'm not trying to sound arrogant, but I've gone through a couple of older albums, "remastered" them, and barely used the compressor to where they actually sound good! Granted, the videos I've posted of my remaster of Killing Is My Business by Megadeth don't sound good, but thats because Youtube fucked up the uploading. I'm planning on re-upping those.

And really it lowers the overall quality of the album. I always listen to the Guitar Hero version of the album instead of the original one. It shows how special this album truly is.
Did you have to start the clip with that horrible solo? It's worst than the albums production, lol. The album is a waste as a whole, but yeah, the production is as terrible.
I don't know, but my guess is Metallica said nothing to GH and GH put the tracks in game and left it like that. But I'm glad they didn't. With Metallica's budget, no way in hell a release should be bad to the point of people going "I'll download the video game tracks instead, they sound better." I can stand compression to a point, but then there'll be a point where listening isn't enjoyable. The content of DM is awesome, but the production makes it a failure.
@powergamer6 They never do, it tends to mess with the overall sound. It's because in the GH version, you don't have the song like on a CD. They store it as the guitar tracks (you play) backing guitar, bass tracks, about 4 different tracks for drums, a vocal track, backing vocal track. You would need to limit these individually which would throw off the balance of limiting a mixdown.
@leandroagustin98 Im sorry, but they really do deep-throat tongue-kiss each other, and a LOT of hard core fans were turned off, hard core. Just sayin, not trollin.
@leandroagustin98 zbut it is true, and you are in denial, imagine in your mind then kissing each other with their tongues. See it? that is what it looks like, because it happened, you queer band supporter.
It's distorted mush. That "digital" distortion sounds like absolute garbage. Sounds like exactly what you DON'T want. What you pay a professional to NOT let happen.
im not a professional with this so im not sure what term to use but just from being a huge music fan and a drummer, what i hear is that all they do with the remastered versions is pump up the non bass side i guess thats the treble and the brass/cymbal sections are just much louder and kinda mushed to together just making it sound like a bunch of loud noise taking away from the bass and the dynamic quality that you'd get with the old cd's
@TimpBizkit Guitar Hero developers got it from the master records, which contain the original songs untouched. The CD versions were audio engineered from the masters, but that didn't happen with the GH DLCs.
Metallica's first really good record in almost 2 decades and Rick Rubin helped fucking ruin it by falling victim to The Loundess War. And I can't believe Lars and James let the album go out like that. I've got to believe that if they wanted to, they could of vetoed the release of the album with that production job. But then again..maybe they didn't have a say in it. Who knows. One thing I do know is they should remaster the fuck out of that album. Death Magnetic AND St. Anger.
if you people are sick of this shit, write letters, emails, facebook comments, tweets, or whatever to the record labels. ITS NOT GOING TO STOP UNLESS MANY PEOPLE MAKE THE LABELS AWARE OF YOUR CONCERNS.
a lot of people were waiting for this album...including other bands who are also fans of Metallica. One would hope that when other bands are making their own albums, they will remember this album and say...'let's not make the same mistake'
@jonathanalvarez1993 and your not the poster of this video?? so you had to take a look for yourself and came up with the same conclusion? that this is an awfull bad recording. Last night i ripped a song in 16bit AIFF and 128kbps MP3, ran them through the oscilloscope. And even the 128kbps sample wasn't as this Metalica Track.
It doesn't matter if Metallica wants their music to be crushed; it's part of their music because it was obviously how they wanted it to be heard. It's bad if either the mastering engineer or record company ruins it without the band's consent.
@Paspiedreamcast It's probably a soundboard mishap. I was doing some audio recordings as well. It needs to be at a certain volume level on the soundboard's output mix to avoid having to "compress" the audio.
I just read that tape and vinyl had a dynamic range of 30db-60db.
now D.A.W.s and C.D.s have the capability of about 96db!!
WOW! and when I see the waveforms of songs made by my favorite artists and bands that just look like a wall with extreme minimal peaks and troughs , I get so disappointed. I now, almost exclusively listen to lo-fi, underground unsigned artist (various genres), and a TON! of old records from my family's collection since the 40's. Recent artist I like; 2562 Fever & Mudcrutch
@TheForeteller yeah, ive heard some great recording WITH NO COMPRESSION and minimal mixing. It can be done but it is a hard and we all know ppl want easy, even producers and engineers.
The reason for loudness probably stems from the fact that early 16-bit digital needed to have a high average volume in order to be clear and resolute, as 16-bit audio has only 65,536 steps of dynamic resolution. This should've been made obsolete entirely by 24-bit audio which has 16.7 million steps of resolution. Instead, we're still dithering down to 16-bit based on the CD standard.. which was invented in 1978.. e.e
@brandavies bullshit. even the best analog equipment can give no more than 20 bits of resolution. And even then, you won't notice any difference between 20 and 16 bit, let alone 24 and 16. Try ABXing and see for yourself.
@BurakovAS At a high average volume, sure, but for classical or other sources with a wide dynamic range, the softest moments in a song lose clarity at lower bit depths. This is why I suggested that this could be a reason for the original choice to maintain a high average volume. I'm not defending the loudness issue by any means, just speculating on it's origins.
@brandavies again, bullshit. you might want to check out ethan winer's audio myths workshop, or even try and check on that issue for yourself - it's not hard to conduct proper tests yourself to see if you can actually hear the difference.
@BurakovAS Pretty interesting guy, thanks for recommending. I wasn't trying to be misleading or anything, I was just speculating as I've said, but I think knowing that there are certain mathematical limitations to 16-bit still influences a lot of decisions, regardless of whether there's a subjective difference in the way it sounds. :P
@brandavies those differences (quantization erorrs) are lower than the noise floor. And they can be cured by using dithering. frankly, there was no excuse for runing a great album like Death Magnetic. It was the first Metallica album i could have listened to without skipping tracks, but now i just can't listen to more than three tracks at once.
@BurakovAS Download the Moderus III Remaster. It's like a new album, I'm listening to it right now and I've also just converted another Metallica fan who hadn't heard this fan remaster (done from the Guitar Hero stems) before. :-D The mix is really so professional - staying true to the sound of the album but done with top hardware and software, and with such love, it makes it sound how the album should've sounded to begin with.
@christopherwoods thanks! it's still heavily compressed, but at least it isn't clipped and distorted (and i like the quieter solo on Unforgiven III - proper balance makes wonders)... My Apocalipse finally kicks the number of asses it should've kicked to begin with... still causes headache but much better than the CD version... and i heard Moderus is working on a fourth version, and he got hold of more stem tracks, so the new version should kick even more ass...
wow. everyti me again it's really amusing. the funniest thing are the drums at the end. on the CD version they sound just like ditorted 8bit nintendo sounds haha yea. stupid prdocuers.
wow, I'm glad you made the comparison of the 2 side by side. It really shows those who are unfamilliar with sound quality, the big difference. Metallica is far beyond their prime anyways. The musical material in Death Magnetic wasn't really that great. If you're looking for a good thrash metal album, I recommend "Ironbound" by Overkill, or "Endgame" by Megadeth.
@123myballsitch I think Endgame and UA are solid albums. I agree that TSHF wasn't really that great. It had some cool parts and a good message, but ultimately it had alot of bad song structuring. I still prefer any of those over death magnetic
Rick Rubin is a clown, Metallica finally releases an album after 5 yrs and that twit Rick HAS to be the producer so Metallica "keeps up with the times" like Slipknot, Linkin Park and System of a Down and hire him to replace snares with mud cannons and guitars with a scraping shovel. Hetfield and Ulrich for all their genius really are a pair of bewildered goofs in ways.

@KRobertB90 I think electronic music makers usually produce and EQ tracks in a way that permits greater loudness without sacrificing dynamics. I think thing like sidechain compression on kicks and stuff, greater attack on synthsounds, etc, make it more suitable for applying hardlimiters to the final song.
@KRobertB90 I think that's what I was saying. Loudness, when based on dynamic range, not compression, is fine. Unfortunately it's like you said, much music is sacrificed and distorted just to get a louder sound which was clearly the issue with Death Magnetic. Loudness should be used without going to the point of distortion, that's the point of mastering.
I am so sick of the over-compression trend. Dynamics are completely lost, kicks have no kick, snares have no pop. Maybe this is why I prefer live recordings lately.
@mbtfeedback I'm shocked that drummers let this happen as the effect on them is most pronounced. I always thought compression most benefitted the bass track and vocals .. i was shocked to see it applied TO THE WHOLE song (I came through the rans during the 1980s, took a long break and am now learning DAW for myself.)
It's probably because I'm not a music production geek, and I'm listening on less-than-stellar equipment to be fair, but the two samples sound well-nigh identical to me.
I think we are going backwards because many artists and producers are restless and want to experiment...but fail to realize their little experiments are irreversible...and even an edited version of an overly compressed album for the fans sake isn't true sound like the "some kind of Monster" single edit. One somewhat redeeming factor is the Death Magnetic album does sound tolerable on vinyl and even a hint of organic.
I always thought something was up with that damn CD! Ugghh that ruined it for me. I listened to the whole thing like once anyway.. you can bet like 99.9% of metallica fans will be to fucked up listening to it to notice the difference anyway lol
the only reason they make the guitar louder for GH is because its a fucking 'guitar' hero game!, if you play the bass then the bass will get louder try it.
Absolutely amazing. I would be totally ashamed to put my name in the credits for mixing this album. Whoever dunnit obviously decided it was a good idea to throw whatever mixing talent they had out the window and just go nuts with the limiter because hey, "it's sounds fucking brutal dude!"
Listen to Ride the Lightning. I mean really listen to the audio work. It's crystal clear but it's still fucking FIERCE sounding. Brutal sound does not equal shitty sound. Fuck off whoever mixed Death Magnetic.
@scimnk amazing isn't it? that ride the lightening, an album recorded almost 30 years ago on what was probably a low budget, sounds a lot better in quality than an album like death magnetic, which obviously now they have an unlimited budget, the highest paid producers, and top notch equipment. How come we're going backwards in sound quality when the technology is presumable getting better?
@sukiari I'll agree the loudness war was on before the iPod,, but only recently has it gotten to the point were even the mainstream are beginning to hear artifacts and clipping. The new generation of people buying digital music to play on cheap PC speakers and mp3 players have enforced it and this has also lead to another problem, recordings with limited frequency ranges. The fact that you claim "An iPod is capable of excellent sound quality" pretty much wins the argument.
It's too easy to blame iPods. The consumer buys what they are told is "better." I doubt there's many kids loading up their iPods with MP3s these days who even know what a turntable is, and think CDs are for old dinosuars. The problem is they're just ignorant. They've spent their whole lives used to this kind of awful quality. They don't even realize they're listening to crap. It's the fault of the record companies for destroying quality and claiming the result is "better."
@murdersgalore The "new generation?" What about people in the 60s and 70s with their little tinny transistor radios, or the people in the 1980s with their Walkmans and their crappy $14.99 plastic boom boxes?
An iPod is indeed capable of extremely high quality audio reproduction. You can use a lossless format, or high bitrate lossy formats with one. If you are careful when ripping music to a digital format, you will literally be unable to tell the difference. Speakers are another issue.
@McFootster I don't think so. The compressed version sounds disastrous in my ears, compared with the original. I'm born in 96, so I don't think my ears are fucked alreday.
@SpiceyGrooves it's like drugs. when people take a little, it improves their stamina, their thinking, their skill usually. but then they want more, and the effect starts being the opposite. So it's like that, the technology is getting better, but maybe making people more stupid (or the people are already stupid, and technology favors a way of enhancing that, in some ways...)
Nobody seems to have figured out that in Digital Audio, there comes a point where you just can't go any louder. I was actually interested in this album being a fan of the old material and didn't bother when I heard about all this rubbish.
I'm blaming record execs. for this shit. It's their fault. No one's willing to push back a release to fight against this because it's all about money. I lost me DM cd during a move, and I can honestly say, I might er, get it another version that has a dynamic range, or I might not pick it up at all.
@SpiceyGrooves yea i agree they call it HQ or HD sound but if you buy the album and copy it as all mp3 files they sound way better, i have been listening to my music in 320kbps since windows 98 came out idk why the people call it HD or HQ if its not better than my sound was 13 years ago on dinosaur computer lol there should be a way to see the kbps of the sound on youtube videos so if im looking for audio quality i can find it without actually listening to a crappy 128kbps or lower
@101LegendKiller its metallica's fault for stealing slayer's record producer cause they wanted to sound faster and heavier(like slayer). its not ricks fault metallica wanted some over modulated crap of an album...it is theirs.....they shoulda never left megaforce records for bob rock.
True. But at some point you have to get "it". And when it comes to the loudness war, Metallica, Rick Rubin just don't get it at all.. The content is excellant, production equals shit and the content suffers because of it..
@101LegendKiller It's sad, because I actually like some of Rick Rubin's productions. He's worked with everybody from The Beastie Boys to Johnny Cash, and the results are usually excellent. It's too bad he's so ignorant when it comes to the loudness war.
@101LegendKiller I thought Rubin coming in and working with Metallica would be good.It was ok but I wasn't impressed.Metallica needs to get Flemming Rasmussen back.
@101LegendKiller I believe it was the band who pushed Rubin to mix as they did. Certainly the Mastering Engineer Ted Jensen distanced himself from the album, explaining it was how he received it from the studio - and he actually tried to tone down the mix to make it more listenable! I can't imagine how bad it was before.
I can't believe Rubin would commit such studio heresy as to produce such an awful mix, the band must have snuck in and fucked with the Pro Tools session at night.
The same goes for Alice In Chains' "Black gives Way To Blue". I tried to listen and enjoy it, but the production is the same as this, so this past Saturday I traded it in for store credit and bought an iTunes card. I can deal with songs whose production isn't all that great which is most albums these days. But when a band has this album production, I will not bother with it.
Well both are to blame. But the questioning train continues to run over Rick Rubin concerning this release. And Metallica does deserve blame for ignoring the concerns and questions.
so fucking sad. i know most people like to blame the mixers for this one, but the official album and guitar hero versions are virtually the same mix (albeit with the guitar parts cut out for playing through). so how can the same mix sound so good on guitar hero and so blown-out on the cd? it's definitely the mastering engineer's doing, despite what ted jensen has said. the man is a liar. i've heard plenty of other cds mastered by ted jensen and they ALL sound extremely processed and compressed.
@SCROTUMvalueMEAL Actually, I've seen the waveforms of the files that were sent for vinyl pressing - they're clipped, and they look very distorted. I can't say if the mastering made things worse, but the distortion was definitely a mix decision.
Try making the Guitar Hero sound like the CD - it's harder than you might think !
@masteringmedia interesting to know. i imagine the final mixes were brick-walled as a whole before being sent off to the mastering lab. and yeah, the GH tracks do lack a certain eq polish and beefiness that the cd has - but judging from the waveforms on this video, you can tell the cd has also been compressed hundreds of times louder than the GH tracks - that couldn't have all been done in mixing. i've heard other albums mixed by greg fidelman and they are decent mixes; loud, but not distorted.
Yeah true, especially the DJs own the gain knob but these faggs at the record lables don't care! And now ask yourself why should pay alot money for a bullshit CD like this?
@MrKennyBones It can be loud and dynamic at the same time if the mix on the CD is dynamic and then the listener just turns up his volume, which is what everyone should do. What the loudness war is all about though is pushing the more silent part of any record up in volume to be closer to the loud parts, making the overall loudness of the album get higher for a set ammount of volume on the stereo. That means that if you do not adjust your volume control the modern cd will sound louder.
@EizN666 I see. Interesting. But volume control on each instrument is pretty crucial, I've always thought that. Atleast in my own music. Never though something like this even existed! It's purely for economical benefits, which is morally disgusting really. There's no room for the art!
A good way of explaining the sound is that it sounds like you put a blancet over your speakers. It's all "tucked in" and doesn't get "out there". Compression of sound is horrible, but this example of Metallica is by far the worst example I've heard. This sounds ilke shit, really.
If you ever bought a CD, you would find the sound quality is just fine. We are talking 1400 kbps file quality versus 128 kbps in your free download from internet. CD has way more data and it shows in the sound.
@Coilaman A good way of explaining the sound is that it sounds like you put a blancet over your speakers. It's all "tucked in" and doesn't get "out there". Compression of sound is horrible, but this example of Metallica is by far the worst example I've heard. This sounds ilke shit, really.

I just dont get it. I think that its better, when its louder, because then you have more variety in volume settings. If its too loud for you, then turn the volume down. I mean what the hell!
@ripa9 Heh, you're right, you don't get it. Making it permanently louder fucks up the dynamics - drumming has no "punch" for example (watch the video from 20 seconds ot the end again, listen for cymbals in the CD version, the listen for symbold in the GH version. The cymbals are completely gone in the CD version). If it's mastered normally and you turn the volume up in your stereo or whatnot, the dynamics are still there - some parts are quieter and some parts are louder.
@ripa9 The cymbal example I used makes sense, because the cymbals are a loud part - in the CD, they completely cut out the loud parts (such as the cymbals) and just made the quieter parts (most of the music) louder.
@tauwilltriumph I think that the snare and bass pedal gives enough "punch" for the drums. Now if you make the cymbals louder, it might sound, like the songs are based on the drum fills.
Lol I dunno, but Im fine with both versions. I never really pay attention to the sound quality.
Compression always kills sounds. I'm sure gh uses a variation of lossless audio. Much easier to fit on a DVD than a cd. They could've releases it on a double track but they opted not to I guess.

Anger.

It doesn't matter if Metallica wants their music to be crushed; it's part of their music because it was obviously how they wanted it to be heard. It's bad if either the mastering engineer or record company ruins it without the band's consent.
Paspiedreamcast 8 months ago
@Paspiedreamcast It's probably a soundboard mishap. I was doing some audio recordings as well. It needs to be at a certain volume level on the soundboard's output mix to avoid having to "compress" the audio.

trufiend138 8 months ago
The reason for loudness probably stems from the fact that early 16-bit digital needed to have a high average volume in order to be clear and resolute, as 16-bit audio has only 65,536 steps of dynamic resolution. This should've been made obsolete entirely by 24-bit audio which has 16.7 million steps of resolution. Instead, we're still dithering down to 16-bit based on the CD standard.. which was invented in 1978.. e.e
brandavies 8 months ago
@brandavies bullshit. even the best analog equipment can give no more than 20 bits of resolution. And even then, you won't notice any difference between 20 and 16 bit, let alone 24 and 16. Try ABXing and see for yourself.
BurakovAS 8 months ago
@BurakovAS At a high average volume, sure, but for classical or other sources with a wide dynamic range, the softest moments in a song lose clarity at lower bit depths. This is why I suggested that this could be a reason for the original choice to maintain a high average volume. I'm not defending the loudness issue by any means, just speculating on it's origins.
brandavies 8 months ago
@brandavies again, bullshit. you might want to check out ethan winer's audio myths workshop, or even try and check on that issue for yourself - it's not hard to conduct proper tests yourself to see if you can actually hear the difference.
BurakovAS 8 months ago
@BurakovAS Pretty interesting guy, thanks for recommending. I wasn't trying to be misleading or anything, I was just speculating as I've said, but I think knowing that there are certain mathematical limitations to 16-bit still influences a lot of decisions, regardless of whether there's a subjective difference in the way it sounds. :P
brandavies 8 months ago
@brandavies those differences (quantization erorrs) are lower than the noise floor. And they can be cured by using dithering. frankly, there was no excuse for runing a great album like Death Magnetic. It was the first Metallica album i could have listened to without skipping tracks, but now i just can't listen to more than three tracks at once.
BurakovAS 8 months ago
@BurakovAS Download the Moderus III Remaster. It's like a new album, I'm listening to it right now and I've also just converted another Metallica fan who hadn't heard this fan remaster (done from the Guitar Hero stems) before. :-D The mix is really so professional - staying true to the sound of the album but done with top hardware and software, and with such love, it makes it sound how the album should've sounded to begin with.
christopherwoods 8 months ago
@christopherwoods thanks! it's still heavily compressed, but at least it isn't clipped and distorted (and i like the quieter solo on Unforgiven III - proper balance makes wonders)... My Apocalipse finally kicks the number of asses it should've kicked to begin with... still causes headache but much better than the CD version... and i heard Moderus is working on a fourth version, and he got hold of more stem tracks, so the new version should kick even more ass...

Carcinomium 10 months ago
@KRobertB90 I think that's what I was saying. Loudness, when based on dynamic range, not compression, is fine. Unfortunately it's like you said, much music is sacrificed and distorted just to get a louder sound which was clearly the issue with Death Magnetic. Loudness should be used without going to the point of distortion, that's the point of mastering.
mbtfeedback 10 months ago
I am so sick of the over-compression trend. Dynamics are completely lost, kicks have no kick, snares have no pop. Maybe this is why I prefer live recordings lately.
mbtfeedback 10 months ago
@mbtfeedback I'm shocked that drummers let this happen as the effect on them is most pronounced. I always thought compression most benefitted the bass track and vocals .. i was shocked to see it applied TO THE WHOLE song (I came through the rans during the 1980s, took a long break and am now learning DAW for myself.)

luscaslayer 10 months ago
I think we are going backwards because many artists and producers are restless and want to experiment...but fail to realize their little experiments are irreversible...and even an edited version of an overly compressed album for the fans sake isn't true sound like the "some kind of Monster" single edit. One somewhat redeeming factor is the Death Magnetic album does sound tolerable on vinyl and even a hint of organic.

Fuck off whoever mixed Death Magnetic.
scimnk 1 year ago
@scimnk amazing isn't it? that ride the lightening, an album recorded almost 30 years ago on what was probably a low budget, sounds a lot better in quality than an album like death magnetic, which obviously now they have an unlimited budget, the highest paid producers, and top notch equipment. How come we're going backwards in sound quality when the technology is presumable getting better?
SpiceyGrooves 1 year ago 55
@SpiceyGrooves Because mastering engineers are forced to cater to nimrods who traded of their HiFi stereo's for Apple iPod horseshit.
murdersgalore 11 months ago
@murdersgalore An iPod is capable of excellent sound quality if fed an excellent file.
This all started with CDs long before there were any iPods.
sukiari 11 months ago
@sukiari I'll agree the loudness war was on before the iPod,, but only recently has it gotten to the point were even the mainstream are beginning to hear artifacts and clipping. The new generation of people buying digital music to play on cheap PC speakers and mp3 players have enforced it and this has also lead to another problem, recordings with limited frequency ranges. The fact that you claim "An iPod is capable of excellent sound quality" pretty much wins the argument.
murdersgalore 11 months ago
It's too easy to blame iPods. The consumer buys what they are told is "better." I doubt there's many kids loading up their iPods with MP3s these days who even know what a turntable is, and think CDs are for old dinosuars. The problem is they're just ignorant. They've spent their whole lives used to this kind of awful quality. They don't even realize they're listening to crap. It's the fault of the record companies for destroying quality and claiming the result is "better."
SurferDoolittle567 11 months ago
@murdersgalore The "new generation?" What about people in the 60s and 70s with their little tinny transistor radios, or the people in the 1980s with their Walkmans and their crappy $14.99 plastic boom boxes?
An iPod is indeed capable of extremely high quality audio reproduction. You can use a lossless format, or high bitrate lossy formats with one. If you are careful when ripping music to a digital format, you will literally be unable to tell the difference. Speakers are another issue.
sukiari 9 months ago

yetanothertubeuser 10 months ago
@SpiceyGrooves it's like drugs. when people take a little, it improves their stamina, their thinking, their skill usually. but then they want more, and the effect starts being the opposite. So it's like that, the technology is getting better, but maybe making people more stupid (or the people are already stupid, and technology favors a way of enhancing that, in some ways...)
Carcinomium 10 months ago

SLAYERMETALLICA357 8 months ago
@101LegendKiller I believe it was the band who pushed Rubin to mix as they did. Certainly the Mastering Engineer Ted Jensen distanced himself from the album, explaining it was how he received it from the studio - and he actually tried to tone down the mix to make it more listenable! I can't imagine how bad it was before.
I can't believe Rubin would commit such studio heresy as to produce such an awful mix, the band must have snuck in and fucked with the Pro Tools session at night.

The same goes for Alice In Chains' "Black gives Way To Blue". so fucking sad. i know most people like to blame the mixers for this one, but the official album and guitar hero versions are virtually the same mix (albeit with the guitar parts cut out for playing through). so how can the same mix sound so good on guitar hero and so blown-out on the cd? it's definitely the mastering engineer's doing, despite what ted jensen has said. the man is a liar. i've heard plenty of other cds mastered by ted jensen and they ALL sound extremely processed and compressed.
SCROTUMvalueMEAL 1 year ago
@SCROTUMvalueMEAL Actually, I've seen the waveforms of the files that were sent for vinyl pressing - they're clipped, and they look very distorted. I can't say if the mastering made things worse, but the distortion was definitely a mix decision.
Try making the Guitar Hero sound like the CD - it's harder than you might think !
masteringmedia 1 year ago
@masteringmedia interesting to know. i imagine the final mixes were brick-walled as a whole before being sent off to the mastering lab. and yeah, the GH tracks do lack a certain eq polish and beefiness that the cd has - but judging from the waveforms on this video, you can tell the cd has also been compressed hundreds of times louder than the GH tracks - that couldn't have all been done in mixing. i've heard other albums mixed by greg fidelman and they are decent mixes; loud, but not distorted.
SCROTUMvalueMEAL 1 year ago

It's no problem to have the sound load and dynamic at the same time? I don't really get the problem in the first place.
MrKennyBones 1 year ago
@MrKennyBones It can be loud and dynamic at the same time if the mix on the CD is dynamic and then the listener just turns up his volume, which is what everyone should do. What the loudness war is all about though is pushing the more silent part of any record up in volume to be closer to the loud parts, making the overall loudness of the album get higher for a set ammount of volume on the stereo. That means that if you do not adjust your volume control the modern cd will sound louder.
EizN666 1 year ago
@EizN666 I see. Interesting. But volume control on each instrument is pretty crucial, I've always thought that. Atleast in my own music. Never though something like this even existed! It's purely for economical benefits, which is morally disgusting really. There's no room for the art!

I just dont get it. I think that its better, when its louder, because then you have more variety in volume settings. If its too loud for you, then turn the volume down. I mean what the hell!
ripa9 1 year ago
@ripa9 Heh, you're right, you don't get it. Making it permanently louder fucks up the dynamics - drumming has no "punch" for example (watch the video from 20 seconds ot the end again, listen for cymbals in the CD version, the listen for symbold in the GH version. The cymbals are completely gone in the CD version). If it's mastered normally and you turn the volume up in your stereo or whatnot, the dynamics are still there - some parts are quieter and some parts are louder.
tauwilltriumph 1 year ago
@ripa9 The cymbal example I used makes sense, because the cymbals are a loud part - in the CD, they completely cut out the loud parts (such as the cymbals) and just made the quieter parts (most of the music) louder.
tauwilltriumph 1 year ago
@tauwilltriumph I think that the snare and bass pedal gives enough "punch" for the drums. Now if you make the cymbals louder, it might sound, like the songs are based on the drum fills.
Lol I dunno, but Im fine with both versions. I never really pay attention to the sound quality.
