The look and physics for Sonic 4 are just all wrong. Even though it's 2D, it just doesn't feel like the old Genesis era Sonic games when you play. The 2D levels on Sonic Generations are better, they actually feel more like the old games.

Unfortunately,most 3D Sonic games don't give out a prefect impression of what 3D Sonic should be.Most of them don't feel free enough and don't have that much platforming,they got it right with Sonic Adventure 1,but then they just threw it off the window and now they got it back with Generations,but it's still not as perfect as it could be.I'm still waiting for the definitive 3D Sonic.

And am I the only one that thinks recent sonic games have gone overboard with giving you step-by-step directions on how to play? I was watching Sonic Generations and it told you how to jump like, ten times in the same level. I like how this one lets you figure it out yourself for the most part.

Im glad that they went back to the classic view of sonic. After sonic 3, sonic just went completely down hill. sure, maybe there are some things that are different in sonic 4, but it still has that classic feel that makes you think back to your childhood.

@carl565 I ain't going further than SA1. I've played what I need (Green Hill and Chemical Plant) of 1 and 2 and played through & Knuckles. Sega made games right in the 90's yes, and also the early 2000s. Basically, the slip up started in 06 with the rushed released of Sonic 06. SA2 was the best Sonic game I've ever played. Only 2 games have come close. SA1 is in 3rd place. I'm not going to say 2nd place. But if you guess, I'll tell you yes or no. Here's a hint, no genesis games.

I think it's great, even if it doesn't offer much new. So much has been kept the way it was that who cares if we get anything new anyway?

It's just too hard for Sega this get it right. They wanted so bad to make it feel like another Genesis game that even the MUSIC has the same synthetized sounds of the original. Yet they got it so wrong on the character design. Please, stop with this 'modern' Sonic crap. Those are spikes, not hair. Stop animating it like hair. His head is all wrong. And he NEVER had green eyes. So stupid. I know it's nitpicking but these details end up being important. And get the PHYSICS right for once.

You know, I'm a Modern fan and even I still think that the Homing Attack is too much here. I remember in Rush you rarely used it (partly because one of the two characters couldn't use it). Sure, that kinda focused on the Boost power, but still. I mean, yeah, OOH, it's showing a mix of old and new, but OTOH, the Homing Attack alone is making it...lose something.

Maybe it's because pretty much the reason for the HA to begin with is to emulate the Spin Attack in 3D better, if I'm not mistaken...

I think the "they complain about green eyes" thing is a card brought up by most modern sonic fans in order to ridicule the "classic" sonic fans.

I have never seen any older fan complain about sonic's eye color in this game, the whole problem that we have with it is that it is an overall broken game, the physics aren't the same and it isn't enjoyable at all, it lacks the same emotion in previous games and, the art style is just bland and generic, sonic deserves better.

The biggest problem with the game doesn't just lie in its quickly looping-music, physics, or poor level layout, it's that it didn't surpass its predecessor's expectations(S3&K). It's an enormous step back from what had been achieved during the Genesis days, many of the previously mentioned ailments being examples, as well as the lack of the wordless storytelling, cinematic moments, and most of all, bringing lots of new things to the table. Homing should have had repurcussions for overuse, too.
