This is the same movie combined with leaving Beverly Hills 90210 that mislead people that Shannen is a bitch. That's not the case. She's a straight shooter which can tick people off mainly because like the movie The Ugly Truth, the truth is not always easy to hear, and rough.
The irony is she is in fact the exact opposite. I read in a 2008 article her being interviewed that co workers described her as headstrong, caring, and I think some other positive word.
Fabulous scene. I saw it when I was 21 & it remains on my top 20 list. This is due neither to nostalgia nor arrested development on my part. This excellent film couldn't be made today. It's deliciously twisted-the switched role-playing between JD & his father,Heather #1's death scene, and most of all, the dialogue.Heather Duke was the most interesting character. She was nothing so ordinary as a bitch-she was a barracuda!See HC's funeral scene.Shannen Doherty OWNS this film &can't be ignored.Ever.
so hilarious and bitchy. but that slap was so absurd. it was so uncalled for and minimal, and they act like it didnt even happen, I watched that 5 times.
yeah because veronica beat her 'arobecised ass' when she tried to make a joke out of martha dumptruck trying to kill herself, so she was prepared this time lol. shows how good actresses all of the heathers were to make such mean, petty, shallow and spoilt brats so compelling to watch, really hasn't been as strong a teen film twenty years later!!!
She was born beautiful so I think it's meaniless to say she looks better today than she did back then mainly because she's taken care of herself, and she still looks very gorgeous. I've seen her now, her 90210 days, Heathers, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and she looks amazing.
And Shannen is right when she says that Betty Finn would not still hang out with her dweebette friends if she was made cool. It's how life works. If the Heathers started being nice to Betty Finn and made her popular, Betty would be hypnotized by popularity and "coolness."
Yeah, and Shannen's character had the biggest transformation because she used to be the unconfident green-wearing girl at the beginning and then she turned into the bitchy red-wearing replacement for Heather #1.
I always figured that when she was in green, it symbolized her jealousy toward Heather Chandler ("Heather #1") - once she was out of the picture, Heather Duke could jump right in her place and be the bitch that she always wanted to be.
I don't thinkshe was really unconfident just hated that Heather Chandler since she antagonized, and disrespected her which did affect her.I think she' was hoping something would happen to Heather Chandler but she didn't feel like doing it herself.
This movie is a grand masterpiece of tragedy, and sorrow. Shannen was excellent in playing a loyal drone that becomes a apalling head bitch.
Well its kind of hinted that like Veronica, Heather Duke had to 'rise the ranks' when J.D. found a childhood picture of her and Martha Dumptruck at some camp hugging each and holding flowers, lol, so she started off as a kiss-arse and would resented Chandler for that. Like you said its a masterpiece tragedy because its so true to the pettiness of high school bullying its so sad that she would try to hide their friendship because Martha was overweight and dowdy.
I remember when I first saw the film, I thought that Heather McNamara was going to take over where Chandler left off, but like you said Duke was waiting in the wings like a leech not wanting to start trouble herself, and then turned into predator!! Just one of the best films ever made, because you take these backstabbing characters and put them into any environment, as politicians, as actresses, as teachers... just high class writing and high class acting, I can't rave enough about it!
I liked the way that the writer Daniel Waters, reversed the roles of Heather Duke and Heather McNamara. At the start McNamara kicks Veronica, puts the note on Marthas tray and is a cheerleader, higher status and more active than Duke who is like a chorus to Chandler and frequently the butt of their taunts. Then Duke becomes queen bee and McNamara is the victim, the scene where she tries to take an overdose is one of the best and theres many. It gave them more depth and made it feel so real.
Good point. The film is a good example of how fleeting power can be and how you continuing being mean to keep your status. And Veronica thinks that people can be popular without being mean, and that's why she ends being the "new sheriff in town." haha
"Jealous much?"
Arguably the best line in this movie.

looks to me heather dodged it and stopped it with her hand because she saw it coming when she said "jealous much?"

"Veronica, why are you pulling my dick?"
Haha.
One of my favorite lines of the movie.
Shannen Doherty gets major props for this scene.

Mine too. When Shannen does that smile and says, "because I can be." I love that! Shannen was sooo on-point in this movie.

True. And Heather McNamara was yellow because she was always scared and tentative.
