  • Our class' Physics homewok... to watch this video :D

  • our teacher shown us this in physics and we had to learn a bit for homework, best homework ever :D

  • ew

  • @starwarsblank6 you sick horrible person, you're obviously too stupid to appreciate this. reported for spam

  • just took my science midterm. SERIOUSLY HELPED.

  • haahaa our teacher showed us this in class today and would keep replaying it!!!! stuck in my head!

  • I wish our teachers showed my class these videos in Physics. A lot more of us would have passed our exams.....

  • and im velocity guy dude you ripping mah powers off

  • he totaly ripped of super speed

  • the beginning is so lol

  • Lol... Watched this in Physics and now people will sing this every time the teacher says, "I got speed and velocity" x)

  • i should be doing homework...you think if i tell my science teacher i was listening to this she will accept it?

  • @Musicaljunki I'm a physics teacher and I would accept it! :)

  • @physteach9 then you are a most excellent teacher

  • Today my science teacher asked the question "What's the difference between speed and velocity?" And I was the only to raise my hand. I aced the question, thanks to TMBG.

  • Thnx It was really useful .

  • SCIENCE CLASS FTW

  • HI MS. KAREL

    HI jake

    hi andrew

    hi nate

    WAKE UP REEECCEE!!

  • btw i hear erection haha

  • speed is a druggg

  • Sooo... yeah, they're practically the same thing.

  • speed and erection?

  • @forallpurposesonly Its Direction. :)

  • @MissUQ IKR

  • Byron center anyone??

  • I like playing this while playing Grand Theft Auto.

  • anyone from curtis bay here

  • Speed< Speed+ Velocity

  • it sucks i hate school. kill me god

  • @kwhites42 Hang yourself

  • Watched in school.

  • I sang this on a science test and aced it! ;)

  • SADIE WAZ HERE.

  • i watched this a week ago in my science class!!!!! its so catchy..

  • @mgapdot1998

The correct wording is " an object at rest tends to stay at rest" there are exceptions to this rule, much like there are exceptions to the English language. And recently, the big bang theory was challenged by some of the most famous scientist of our age after creating a black hole in the particle accelerator in switzerland. You can google the results.

I realize you are only 12 and you have only been taught so much, but there is a method to our madness

  • i watched this in SCIENCE CLASS! I love Mrs. Terbecki!!!!

  • fml we watched this in science class... fml why did i search it up -___-

  • Comment removed

  • this is a school house rock wanna be >:(

  • @MGAPdot1998 Don't hate.

  • @MGAPdot1998 This is far more helpful and educational than School House Rock!

  • @MajorJakobs more of the mordern type of school house rock

  • @MajorJakobs actually, school house rock focuses on all the educational subjects(math, science, language arts, etc.) while they might be giants only focuses on science, and the WRONG type: evolution. and if u wanna argue about if evolution is real or not, then Come at me bro. :)

  • @MGAPdot1998 Why are so againts evolution. I have read it from a book Cappmbell Reece 7th edition There is too much evidence fro that, ok. Creationism fails evolution wins until prooven wrong :) I came at you waddaya gonna say

  • @RichtoffenRoach Ok. im 13 and since i have to teach this 2 u is really sad. first of all, to prove a point, u have to at least give a REAL reason to believe what u believe. You cant just give the fact that someone wrote a certain book.and if u do, u have to tell why you believe what's in it. u have to back it up. Ok...do u believe in the Big Bang Theory?

  • @MGAPdot1998 O do you believe in God? Same shit my friend there is no proof for anything and the truth is I don't know and don't care. And evolution is not a beliefs. Is really sad how narrow are you your comment sincerely is BS

  • And since you are 13 that's ok I'm 17 and I'm a little confusing. We are too young and we have to study first and know wtf are we talking about before commenting nonsense :) But good job

  • @MGAPdot1998 Okay first off, With SHR when they taught about US history they kind of jaded over several key facts about what ACTUALLY HAPPENED, they hid the fact that with the revolutionary war the citizens of england actually payed the same, and higher in some cases, taxes, and that there could be no active representation BECAUSE THERE WAS AN OCEAN BETWEEN THE TWO NATIONS. And then they did this song about spreading across the continent, and missed all the mass murder of natives we committed.

  • @MGAPdot1998 And then on the topic of science, actually in recent years astronomers have found evidence of the Big Bang, you know how far off light takes extremely long times to reach us? Well apparently a team at NASA, and some university, I can't remember which, observed the image of guess what? The Big Bang. However this means that the matter from the big bang must have traveled far faster than the speed of light, which would screw up space and time as we know it.

  • @MGAPdot1998 And finally with evolution, there's evidence of fossils and rock patterns in Africa that are also in South America, and the fact that different groups of the same species that live in different areas have adapted to have different traits so that they may survive. Like what Darwin observed at the Galapagos Islands, where different birds of the same species of finch had different types of beaks on almost every island, because the type of fruits and nuts were different. QED.

  • @MGAPdot1998 And finally I am, myself an agnostic, but I was once a rather religious Jew, and I was and currently am under the belief that if there is a God, he, or she to be fair to women, or it, rather, caused the big bang to happen, and gave us the story of the garden of eden to the Israelites so that their feeble minds could handle it. Honestly if God started explaining Quantum Physics to a bunch of people from that time period, they wouldn't get it.

  • @MGAPdot1998 So it is my belief that God, if he/she/it exists wills mankind to pursue science and discover more of he/she/it's mysteries of he/she/it's creations, even if it contradicts some texts he/she/it left us. There are actually many people who are starting to look at the bible as less of an accurate historical recording of creation and whatnot, and rather moral guidelines (which unfortunately many "religious people" seem to be overlooking) we should all live by. I have come at you, bro.

  • @MajorJakobs well yes. many "religious people" do overlook the bible alot. and some dont even pray. that is why (if you believe in god) you can tell if someone is a believer or just says that they are. besides science contradicts itself too. Ok. science basically revolves around the big bang theory and evolution. the big bang theory says that there was this small compressed mass of "energy". then it just exploded into the creation of the universe. but, that has 1 error...

  • @MajorJakobs this error is that science also supports Isaac Newton's fact that an object at rest stays at rest. Well, if the compressed mass was at rest and not exploding, then it coudnt have just one day "decide to explode". so yea. and cool im jewish too. im hebrew messianic.

  • Actually, velocity is displacement over time. Not like speed's distance over time. A small detail, but an important one.

  • how did i get here from a payless comercial -_-

  • LOL THIS WAS SCIENCE HOMEWORK!!!!!

  • @CedricUreta DOUBLE COMMENTER!

  • Cool :))))))

  • Coool :))))))))))

  • so speed is speed and velocity is the direction of speed

  • @jeliconline It is better to think of it more as "speed is the magnitude of velocity". Because "direction of speed" would literally just be the direction of the speed, such as "West" or "in the positive x-direction". Say you are going 25 mph at a 45 degree angle (or NE). Your speed is 25 mph. Your velocity is 25 mph @ 45 degrees or 5 mph North, and 5 mph in the East (written mathematically as 5i + 5j).

Sorry I got all explain-y on you. I couldn't resist.

  • @TheNixolas ^_^

  • @jeliconline

    Yup,

Speed is how fast you are going. Velocity is how fast you are going and the direction you are going.

  • the song is crap... but amazing at the same time.

  • When I was a little kid I used to listen to They Might Be Giants' songs for grown ups, and now I'm a grown up and all I do is listen to their kids albums.

  • @PelicanGodOfJupiter lol i thought that too

  • my friend:" Hey are you on team Edward or team Jacob? :D"

    Me: "NEITHER!!!! >:D"

    friend: team bella?"

    me: NO!

friend: then what team are you on...?"

    me: TEAM PHYSICS!!!!!! >:D"

  • im high as hell and thats right I got speed!

  • @Bithernek rofl

  • @SpaceTime4D No, as there are two possible directions.

  • coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

  • speeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed

  • Question: if there was only one dimension, would speed and velocity be equivalent?

  • this is like the most basic.. i want more.. :(

  • Speed is defined as change in DISTANCE over time. Velocity is defined as change in DISPLACEMENT over time. If you're not traveling in a straight line, then your distance is bigger than your displacement, and thus, your speed is higher than your velocity.

  • I am in 4th grade and I have NDI lessons.I uses this song. That is why I search for it.NDI is dancing class.

  • @Luchia676 iaiosufdilewh fyouelfk,gb azhjeirifqlad

  • SPEED AND DIRECTION!

  • @marinpetricevic7 Right on... The differences become clear(er) when you add multiple values together, such as a head wind, or a river current. If you just have speed and no direction your kind of hosed in calculating final position. I think a great example that might help people who think of these as the same is to look at another scalar value - temperature. Temperature doesn't have direction. Density doesn't have a direction.

  • 0:59 The airplane is going at a speed of 500 "miles" per hour. What's a mile?

  • @SpaceTime4D A mile is a standardized unit of distance.

  • @SpaceTime4D A mile is 1.609344 kilometres, just round it off to 1.5. The plane would be traveling at 804.672 km/h

  • Speed is scalar and velocity is a vector... quite simple

  • wat the hek speed and velocity are the same, just one includes direction????

  • @MW2fabian

they forgot to mention that if you ran in a circle a whole number of times (as in you ended up where you started) you would have a velocity of zero, as speed is a ratio of distance (length of path stretched out) to time, but velocity is a ratio of displacement (length of a straight distance between start and endpoint) to time

  • @ukywildcat7 I think the song and video are awesome. I'm just pointing out that the people who disliked it could've disliked it because of a more detailed understanding of physics, not a lack of understanding. Your jab was both clever and unnecessary

  • lol they played this in sciencee loool

  • I saw this in class today

  • @jjaritos hehe me too

  • O Yeah Science..Yeah :)

  • we saw tis in class 2day :D

  • Awsome

  • i like John but John is weird

  • steve greenslade

  • my science teacher showed this to us XD

  • were studing this in science

  • two people think speed and velocity are the same thing

  • @sc1592 Yea, but now its 4 people. I agree that the 4 people think speed and velocity are the same thing.

  • @Mommy2amberrose Or 4 people know that acceleration is a change in velocity, but not necessarily an increase

  • @JimKHarp and jerk is the rate of change of acceleration also not necessarily an increase

  • I love this. Divya Srinivasan's art style is fantastic.

  • My teacher showed this to our physics class, and the volume wouldn't go any higher, so all my classmates know is that it goes like "Speeeeeed........... velocityyyy............. ACCELERATION!!!!!" =))

  • my sience teacher is obsessed with this song

  • lindo!!!!

  • 1:11 i was waiting for them to flip upside down, messed up rollercoaster..

  • the guy driving the car at the beginning looks just like the guy from waking life! watch?v=SkDL6et4jsI

  • @MichaelLeroi That's totally Wiley Wiggins! NUTS!

  • 2 people got their powers ripped off. :P

  • these videos are a fun way of learning! AND they re hilarious!!!

  • I need to purchase this album. It explains things so well.

  • why thank you

  • so velocity is speed and direction?

  • @hemmingway28 yes indeed.

  • @hemmingway28 yuppp

  • my physics teachers are so crap

this is so simple yet i didnt know it before?

  • Star Trek has been wrong it's entire time!

  • I LOVE all these videos, and they all have the right edgecational facts

  • @hkirkp01 no offense, but when you spell educational "edgecational" it just becomes this funny little poetic irony.

  • At 0:35 the song sounds eerily like the Mystery Science Theater 3000 intro.

  • We watch this in 8th grade science class all the time with Ms Snow... it's so darn catchy!

  • This looks like it was done by the same person who did the Skipper Dan video for Weird Al. Was it?

  • 2 People are Velocity Guy

  • I'm in college studying Physics and I've watched this and this is probably best explanation of these concepts that I've come across! YAY SCIENCE!! Happy Science week!! XD

  • 2 people are taking chemistry.

  • we watched this in physics today!

  • @ilikegrass990 mee too

  • When it says acceleration it isn't thorough enough. It just says, "let's go faster." which leads us to believe that acceleration is just a change in speed, but it is a change of velocity, so if you maintain the same speed but change direction you're accelerating. Anyway, this sums up most of my physics class last year.

  • Free inexhaustible energy is real! But the Oil companies want these technologies unknown to the masses,Get a REAL working magnet motor at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Join the revolution!

  • Right, someone explain this to me.

I get that speed is how fast you are moving, and velocity is the direction in which you are going.

But what's the point of the distinction? Surely if you have speed, you must be going in a direction. So shouldn't that mean speed and velocity are just two parts of one thing that cannot be separated. Why would you count speed without a direction? ARGH.

  • @breakingstuff1 Velocity is your speed in a direction. It's useful for calculating momentum and acceleration and stuff because if something starts moving in the opposite direction, it's expressed as a negative to make things easier. So if you've got something moving at 10m/s north, and it starts accelerating at -1m/s^2, you can safely say that in 11 seconds it will be moving south.

  • @Dogmantra2 Oh I see! Thank you. :)

  • Haa this was our science song (:

  • I tutor freshman physics and I can't get people to understand these concepts... I must say, though, it's quite well summed up here.

  • Comment removed

  • does velocity only work with north south east and west?

so if i'm in a spaceship going at 1000 miles per hour, but i'm going directly into outer space, i don't have any velocity? just speed?

  • @gb389 No, you'd have velocity, but you'd have to specify a direction, probably relative to the position of your surroundings. A rock falling straight down clearly has velocity, even though it would not move in a cardinal direction. :)

  • wtf is this.

  • Science can be...FUN?WTF?!ç.ç

  • I swear to god i heard this song today in class

  • Us to but it is good for science

  • We have to sing this song in science, it's so funny!

  • That song is so catchy.

  • its hard to believe that alt rock can be so educational, but who cares?! its freakin science! nd for that matter, why do little kids think tat north is considered up? make song about this, please!!!

  • @mjhher3394 Because you hold a map vertically in your hands. Most young people don't tend to look down at something when they're using it.

  • this is a case of arbitrary convention elevated to absolute truth. it's so small minded. speed and velocity is of course exactly the same. that some dude somewhere decided that speed is the scalar form and velocity is the vector form does not make it etched in stone! fuck convention.

  • @DanFrederiksen -it's only small minded because the song is made to simplify what confuses some people. And besides, the two words are different, otherwise why make a different word for each?? It wouldn't make sense otherwise. Seems like you are trying to say someone created the words and someone else said they are different. The words mean two different things that deal with the same topic. This concept is excepted worldwide.

  • @myr2260 you mean like warm and hot? or tasty and yummy.

it's not the song's fault although seems there are topics you might want to cover in song before this. it's a convention in some circles of physics/engineering to make that highly artificial and arbitrary distinction. if you look it up in a dictionary they are perfectly synonymous except for in the context of physics. it's an arbitrary distinction. for those of us who think on our own it's frankly offensive to have it imposed. I rebel

  • i have to show this to my physics teacher

  • Man, marty's got quite the voice.

  • AWESOME, I'm the 100th person to rate ^-^

  • Why don't teachers know about these songs? Seriously. xD

And I love TMBG so it'd be even better. A couple weeks of learning put into a song. c:

  • yeah we were doing this subject in my school about 3 months ago for 4 weeks here it is in 2:10 ... wow

  • I LOVE THIS AWESOME. Also, Speed can also mean slowing down! See Mr. Sharma! I still remember stuff from your class.

  • Why are they measuring velocity in miles per hour?

  • nice vid for like 5 year olds

  • help me how can i download this video i need it in our speed and velocity project in science please help me. :(

  • YEAH! PHYSICS!

  • This is seriously the first time I ever understood the difference between the two. Thanks, TMBG and Marty Beller!

  • Today on my first day in PHYS 121, I felt like I was wasting my money because They Might Be Giants had already taught me this. Thanks guys!!

  • Hey! I could have passed that stupid college physics class if i had this song! Well...no I couldn't. But, you know...

  • "When you're on a jet plane, and you're on the runway, ready to take off, and then you're stuck on the tarmac overnight!"

  • Great for kids! And such good music production that i'ts enjoyable by adults. I love this!

  • I have Marty Beller's autograph on a TMBG bumper sticker. He's the man.

  • Motion, direction, acceleration!

    Haha, love it!

  • this was like a weeks worth of lessons in high school physics summed up and condensed into 2 explanatory minutes

  • I'm probably going to get tested on this. So now I know!

Thanks, Science! And They Might Be Giants!

  • Love this one!

  • Yay Marty!!!

  • Fun!

  • Grr why are there apostrophes in the miles?!

You write a great song and let an animator spoil it.

  • I didn't see any apostrohpes

  • Great

  • Not bad. Helps to remind me of the difference between speed and velocity.
