@SouthcoastContractor probably took it as a complament that he sounded like John Lennon. I always thought John Fogerty was from down south because of the sound of his voice. found out i was wrong.
John and Beau Cecchino are brothers originally from Bergenfield, NJ. Their mother just passed away at 94 and was still living in Bergenfield. Incidentally, they had changed their last name to Charles.
These guys were not from Jersey. They were a garage band from L.A. They got their start around the time the time the band "Love" owned the Sunset Strip.
saw these guys live in Riviera Beach, Florida in a place called the "Musicasters" in the far back-end of what was called the "Bazaar International". the guys switched instruments, drums for guitar, bass, lead etc. still sounded great. I think it was 1966. check out another good one by these guys,---"One Track Mind"
I saw these guys at Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi around 1966,on the same show was Paul Revere and the Raiders,Hermans Hermits and 2 other bands, they did a show at noon and at 7,it cost me 7 dollars a show and that was expensive for a 12 year old kid like me but I loved it.It was a Dick Clark tour with dancers and all. p.s. The Byrds played the week after that but I was broke.
Great rock song. The drummer is Jimmy Walker, a friend of mine. He also was one of the Righteous Brothers when Bill split from the group. Great drummer, great voice, great guy.
did they play this song over and over when in concert? you know, like when richie and potsy played the frat party? "alright, fellas, this time we'll give it to them with the sax solo. tonight, boys, we're bigger than the beatles AND jesus".
@1skullduggery No actually these guys played everything and everything...the did a great Beach Boys set. Their vocals were phenomenal. All four of them sang solo and harmony. Great live band. Biggest band to come out of the North East!
@wel1951x hey new jersey buddy randell lived on knickerbocker road in bergenfield and had been seen in the sam ash music store on rt . 4 paramus they performed at lake george initialy then went to california the isley brothers lived in teaneck they had t- neck records one time they invited half the town to a party in their house i kno a guy who had a seafood restaurant in teaneck roberta flack used to eat there things were going good until a cop shot a boy in the back and killed him
This is one of the great songs from the 60s and this is a clip that I've never seen before...excellent quality. Just wish they had shown the sax solo. What program was this?
@Jessyleppert My thought exactly. Knowing McCartney, he probably wrote a hit song immediately and went to bed....LOL. Yeh, Paul loved the Kinks, and Im sure he admired this one. The Beatles gave away hit songs to Peter and Gordon, Bad Finger and others. Never intimidated, they kept churning out the hits, never worried or duplicated.
@Jessyleppert - they probably loved it - the Beatles were great artists & they always knew that imitation is & remains the sincerest form of flattery. As artists they were always great inspirations and remain so to this day.
yes the bass player had a gig. "it was so much better then selling vacuums". he said... and it was true... but most his dreams and corporate america made sure he never fucked .. i mean he never made it in sho biz -- same thing .. thank you corporate america for building strong shapes of adulthood. right. yippee.
Yes, these guys get compared to the Beatles and the reason is clear -- The quality of the song, vocals and instrumentation on Lies is on par with anything the Beatles recorded at this period of their career. And yes, the lead vocal has that Lennon edge, too.
@buddyeagle So do I, I crave to get a 12 and a 6 string before I die. (And times running out fast, born in 1953). Check out the riffs at 1:32-1:34, veeeery kool or what?? And, how did he get that somewhat of a distorted tone on the Ric, which usually are played with a clean sound? Good "rare" video of a great 60's tune.
i used to see Buddy Randell and the Knickerbockers at a club on Snyder's Lake in NY state back in '64. Same group. Jimmy Walker went on to do an album with Bobby Hatfield in the '70's which I still have.
What I don't understand is where does the saxophone part play in?!? Or was that for a previous number. Also, SPG1, would you also happen to have 'Stick With Me', I just learned that this number predates anything done by The Nazz and Jefferson Airplane, so I'm searching for that.
Jimmy's record was before Gary Puckett and the reason they may sound a like is because Jimmy was produced and did songs by Jerry Fuller who also worked with Gary Puckett. Jimmy has a heck of a history. He recorded with a group called the Castle Kings who had two 45's on Atlantic. I have those as well. Jimmy has a great story of how they met Ahmet Ertegun and how he recorded them after hearing them singing on the street.
I know. I have all of Jimmy's 45's. There is one that is posted that came from my collection that my friend in London posted for Jimmy. The brothers went to Bergenfield High School in NJ just outside of Dumont. I just sent my friend in England their High School photos from Bergenfield High School in NJ. I did a google search and found them. Check for yourself. You can even look that up on Wiki I believe.
@SchenectadyScott Thats not exactly right bob gaudio later of the 4 seasons wrote short shorts buddy randall played sax on that record buddy lived on knickerbocker road in bergenfield i used to know him from the music store i have a friend who used to work with him who was a dj at wfdu

I did know Buddy lived in Dumont on Knickerbocker Rd. in NJ. I did a search and found he sold the house he grew up in the 90's before he passed away..Beau and John were from Bergenfield NY. @SchenectadyScott theres a jimmy walker record in here[ thats the one that sounds like gary puckett ]i cant think of the title that reads arranged by bill crandall on the label thats buddy i read some place that the brothers went to high school in new york bergenfield is in new jersey
@325v64 I first Heard it on a Old Cassette, that my Dad had, It was a 1960s Various Artist album, I don't remember the name (Because I was doing The Lion Sleeps tonight in the Camp talent show), And I first heard Lies on the Cassette and I thought it was the Beatles, Then I realized it was the Knickerbockers, I was 8 when I First heard it.
Love this song...always have. but what's with the prop sax. you never hear it in the song. I guess It was cool to hold something, even a cello if that were the case.
