  • Hi Star, Just wondering you didn't say much about the difference in quality (appart from lower ISO settings on the markIV) between the 5DMKII and the 1D MKIV when it comes to shooting video? Is the MK IV better? or not?

  • HI Starfedrogue. I just shot my short on Canon 1D Mark 4 at HD res. I edit with Final Cute Pro 5G ram on Dual 2.66 Dual core Mac. It is very fine when I review the clips. However, when I play the edit sequence, it did not play flawlessly but it got stopped between the 2 cuts. I went out to get a new Dual Quad Core Mac. It is a bit faster but it still got the same stopping problem. What should I do to make the edit sequence play flawlessly? Please help.

  • @taelinng Sorry, I don't use Final Cut so I have no idea!

  • @taelinng hey pal its actually the hd format that does that it happens all the time on the hd file format

  • Hi starfedrogue

The aperture I used was 2.8 and shutter speed was 1/50 at 24 frame/s. Is this wrong? or anything I can do the improve the noise issue. All I need is a good video with no noise so I start to shot my documentary. Miillion thanks starfed

  • @taelinng I would try using a slower shutter speed so you can reduce the ISO number, which should help with the noise. 1/50s is right on the boundary of being too fast for a night scene lit by street lamps. Experiment with different settings and see what results you get.

I suspect that the yellow colour is because the white balance is set incorrectly. If the presets on the camera don't give you the result you want, try setting a custom value.

  • Hi Starfedrogue or whoever read this.. I look at the Nocturne of Vincent Laforet. So I bought the 1D Mark 4. I ttest shoot it on my street. it almost has the same lighting condition like the LA area where Vincent shot his video. All I got is yellow video and HEAVY NOISE. even I set my ISO at 1000. When I go up to 3200, the noise is just a mess. I use EF 16-35 f2.8L. Please help me. How can I get just a clean video. Thanks for your concern.

  • @taelinng When you say yellow video, do you mean completely yellow or video with a yellow colour cast over it? What aperture are you using? What shutter speed?

  • which of these cameras are best for shooting documentary? I am shooting a doc at prisons and on the street never in a studio. I hear the audio is not good. What do you think

  • @shepparg It depends. The 5D2 will give you the full true focal length of your lenses. The 7D and 1D4 are essentially better cameras, but they have a crop factor. If you're in close quarters like in a prison, or you want a wide field of view to capture a street scene, you will probably want the full frame 5D2.

The built in microphones are useless on all models. You will be much better off with an external mic like the Rode Videomic, or a completely separate audio recorder, such as the Zoom H4n.

  • The ridiculous ISOs in the 1D create too much noise. what's the point of claiming the range if it lacks quality? Anyone know the lenses used in the Nocturne? I'm confident that the 7d, 5d, and even the mischievous T2i could produce the same results with the same lenses.

  • @CelestialHarvester

Hi CelestialHarvester. I just got my 1D mark 4 thinking that I will get the same result with Vincent laforet. All I got is noise. Were you be able to reduce the noise proble you have? and how do you cure that? Thanks CelestialHarvester

  • For me, I'm seeing a lot of waste with the 7D. 19 mps but only 18 get recorded?

There are way too many ISOs (I hear multiples of 320 are best? I'm not sure about the proportions in electronic ISOs) The T2i CMOS is also the same size as the Canon. It even has a slightly sharper image. Is this some kind of old school merchant set up???

  • I would love to see what you think about the comparable consumer camera: T2i rebel...at this rate, I'm wondering if they'll make an even better camera for 2/3 of the price. sigh.

  • ya I have the canon 30D and 40D mainly I use my 30D im upgrading to the Canon 5D Mark II some time this month

  • Interesting video, thanx for ur thoughts.

  • i'm wondring when r they going to release the 5D mark III?

  • There is a rumour that they are bringing it forward to next year. But you know what Canon rumours are like!

  • Thanks a lot for this summary you cleared things up for me. I was a Nikon film SLR user until 10 years ago-sold all my kit & lenses. Im back in the game again and after evaluating the market & my budget I couldnt pass up the 7d. Even though I loved my Nikon gear I found it too hard to justify springin for a 300 given the features of the 7d plus I can use it as a B camera for the video work I do.

  • I'm glad the video helped! I am very tempted to buy a 7D myself... ooh so very tempted.

  • Thanks for your great review. Yet my priority is image quality. I tend to find many forums saying that the 5D MKII has a far superiour image quality than the 7D. Could you kindly address this as I am seriously considering the 5D MKII.

    Thank you for your time.

  • I often read that too... at first I thought it was 5D2 owners who were annoyed by the release of the 7D at that price point, but the 7D has been out a while now and that still seems to be the popular opinion.

I wish I had both so I could compare them :(

  • Always glad to find another Canon guy, good info!

  • Great video but you should change the title so people can find it. "5d 7d 1d compared" or something like that.

    Anyway, thanks for this.

  • Done!

  • Nice! Watch the views skyrocket.

  • From what I've seen, tags seem to influence search position far more than titles. But I guess there's no point floating up the search results if the title doesn't make people click!

  • i'm thinking.................?

  • My buddy has the 7D and loves the new AF, its very good in servo (we shoot wildlife). But he still thinks his Mark3 takes better pictures. He said the 7D had more noise then the mark3, so I would assume the mark4 will be even better.

I never had any problems with Canons customer support. I got my flash repaired (that I dropped) and it only had 15 days left on its warranty.

Something else to think about is that for the price of the nikon 600mm I could almost get the canon 600mm & mark4.

  • I still think many people will choose the 5D MII over the 7D. I think extra autofocus points are a bit of a gimmick (to keep up with Nikon). 5D's Full-Frame sensor is the real selling point: the 7D can't shoot wide angle. The 7D is a huge leap in technology, but so is the 5D MII (HD video being the true "killer" feature). The 7D's better LCD, faster shooting & extra AF points are nice, but not as nice as a Full-Frame CMOS in my opinion. For some the 7D will be a better choice, for others the 5D

  • I think the extra AF points are basically there because the new AF systems won't work properly without them. I am longing to get my hands on a 7D and try it out with my L glass ^_^

  • well, I am into motorsports, and for the price I think 7D is really appealing to me. I don't find the price of 1D MkIII justifiable for my use (amateur use), but this 7D's 8 frames/sec and its price is really good. My 5DMkII is way too slow for motorsports, and with 7D it will feel like I own a 1D and 1Ds.

  • at first i thought this video was going to be a snore - but you seem well read about the camera technologies and keep up with the trends. I will come back again.

  • Thanks! I hope my rambling is useful ^_^

  • Great video. I am a studio photographer who made the switch from Nikon in the film days to Canon for digital about 5 years ago. I bought a 5d Mk2 when last November and it is absolutely amazing. I also have a 1D Mk2n and a 20D and a whole slew of L series lenses.

Back in 2004 Nikon executives stated they had no plans for full frame and that was made me switch.

(The HD video on the 5D2 is amazing especially with the 85/1.2, you just can get shallow DoF like that with a consumer camcorder. )

  • Nooo! Deformed again!

    Fix your aspect ratio issues!

  • Yeah not sure what went on with that. Vegas was being an arse.

  • so you are a partner

    congratulations :D
