  • love this, thanks!

  • did you add preservatives? for a long shelve life.

  • so great & professional.. thanks for sharing!

  • is it safe to use this as a facial moisturizer? will it clog pores? also is it safe for acne prone skin? thank you

  • Can I add coconut oil to this recipe? If so, how and how much?

  • Why is the butter sooo yellow? I've purchased pure unrefined shea butter and it was a slightly off white color. Second, if this is for hair what are the powders for again? Third, I didn't have to melt my shea down like that when I wanted to mix it. I just broke it up a lil with a spoon, added my fav oils, raw unfiltered honey and used a hand mixer to mix it.

  • Has anyone made this at home using these ingredients? I really want to make it. I love shea butter but I can't take the smell anymore & I miss smelling sweet. I also want to make a scented black soap beacuse to me it has no smell. Before using shea butter and african black soap, I used Dove Cream Oil Shea Butter Body Lotion & body wash, I want to mimic the smell of it. I miss that smell so much!! But I'm extremely happy I'll never go back to store bought lotions and soap.

  • To be honest, I just place a very small bowl of ice under the Kitchen Aid bowl and I don't have to put it in the refrigerator during the whipping process.

  • now what is this for hair? is it conditioner? lotion? so sorry I didnt see a definite use for the tutorial. thanks for the video It was very wonderful and demystifying. I hate wondering how things are made!

  • Could you, please, write below the video the names of the four white jars to the left of the scales? I only mananged to decipher corn starch and am lost about the other three. Thank you!

  • wow this is so kool!!! is that a bread maker mixer?? i love this process.

  • i've been purchasing shea butter from you all for a while now!!! it really is the best shea butter i've ever used and my skin and hair love it!!

  • I brought some Shea Butter and Coco Butter GREAT STUFF I must say the Shea Butter was very soft.. she added a small gift in there it looked like blue eye shadow but I was not sure... guess I'll email her to find out... Shipping was quick too

  • Could I add zinc oxide to this mixture and if I could when would I have to add it?And how much would I have to add to get a moisturizer with spf 30 or higher when using 4 oz of the unrefined shea butter?

  • Love your video

  • nice

  • This recipe is excellent!!! Do you have a lotion recipe?????

by far there is not better than this one!

  • Does anybody know where to find a kitchen scale, similar to the one in this video? I can't make out the brand name on the scale.

  • The first time I made this it was wonderful. Since then I am having trouble at the last part, when I put it in the fridg..it doesnt have the thickness yours does in the video..for the life of me I can figure out why!

  • the odor from the unrefined shea butter ...how can I avoid this?

  • @eleanorwatson1 using the essential oils with the shea like she does in this video is one way of avoiding the odor of unrefined shea. If you won't want to make a whipped butter like this, you can melt down your unrefined shea the same way she does and add the essential oils to the melted down shea. Then mix it well and place it in the refrigerator to harden back up. However, the way she does it, with the additives gives an awesome consistency and greatly reduces the greasy consistency.

  • wow amazing video, thanks for posting. Got one question I didn't quite catch the name of one of the powders is it "boron nitrate'? and what does it do for the butter?

  • @peppermint6666 if you go to their website, you can find the powder, Boron Nitrate available for sale under the makeup ingredients area "Additives and Fillers"

  • I JUST REC'VD MY SECOND ORDER OF SHEA BUTTER AND BLACK SOAP THANKS YOU GUYS ARE GREAT

  • wht ws the name of the oil absorbing powders?

  • This seems like a lot more work and money than just buying it for yourself at a beauty store.

  • @Lifesaparty100

Just an FYI, the stuff at the beauty store is either not shea butter at all or its tainted shea butter

  • can you store the finished product in a metal tin or would glass/plastic be better. also can you add water to soften the shea or would that not be good?

    thx!!

  • @pritybrown1

I know this is probably directed to the owner of the video but I thought I'd share some info. If you add water you MUST add a preservative to keep the shea from molding or growing bacteria. A good natural preservative is Vitamin E but its has to be 4000IU, you can purchase it at Whole Foods

  • is it necessary to melt the shea butter in order to get the whipped consistency. I've heard that melting causes the shea butter to lose some of essential properties.

  • @ob2be Only if it is heated to high temps, that's why the lady in video emphasized that she didn't let it boil

  • kool, thanks ;)

  • Is there any way to add cocoa butter and African honey to this?

  • Whats the shelf life of this mixture... and are any of the added ingredients considered as preservatives?

  • Hi i was wondering what is the shelf life of it after it's whipped and packaged? Also after its packaged does the shea butter mixture remain with that same texture, that icing, smooth, luscious texture?

    THANK YOU LOVE THE VID!

  • OMG! THAT WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!! <333333333333333

  • feel like eating it..looks like cake dough..thanks for sharing this..

  • But isnt the oil of the shea butter the reason why its so effective. If u r taking away its oil whats the point of it?? Thanx

  • @zakaria666 ... It takes a while for unrefined shea butter to absorb on it's own, and leaves you feeling greasy. I think the additives take away the oily feeling of shea butter on the skin.

  • Can I add Cocoa Butter to this?

  • What's the best way to package this?

  • What is the purpose of using rice powder in this concoction?

    Thanks for the video : - ))

  • Beautiful video Thanks for sharing.

  • I just absolutely love your vids and you are awesome, keep them coming! Due to the economy I have found myself being resourceful, I love crafts and I love cooking and being a woman, I naturaly love all the "body butters, luxurious soaps, makeup" that us girls enjoy, if I was a guy I would be gay LOL... I just bought lots of stuff from Coastal Scents for my upcoming business and I cant thank you all enough for the support and the vids! TY

  • Thank you! Can the products you described in this video be purchased at a local whole food of store that specializes in natural products?

  • can i use the shea butter that you sell on your website on the out of africa tab. If so do i need to melt it?

  • where can you purchase these powders other than online?

  • i just got my shea butter in the mail. but its all melted what should i do??

  • @Janetja1 refrigerate it. Hope it turned out OK : - ))

  • @Janetja1 let it harden up in a cool cupboard.

  • kathy, as usual great presentation. Does this stay whipped or does it harden after a day or two?

  • @kardodee I was looking for a reply from the uploader to this question..n the answer is......???

  • @kardodee Because of the natural consistency of the Shea butter and the carrier oils that you add to it, it won't harden.

  • Can I substitute any of the powders with kaolin clay? I have some left over from your bath bomb recipe.

  • Looks great. Do the essential oil take mask the ash odor of the shea butter?

  • thanks for the perfectly detailed explanation. but one note on the instruction: her lines at the beginning and the end sound really rehearsed.

  • i love your site and your fair trade!!! african blacksoap

  • I BET it smelled like heaven!!!!!!such fun!!

  • Why is this video so depressing?

  • Do you HAVE to whip it? What happens if you put the liquid mixture into a container and let it cool down and harden in there?

  • I want to use shea butter and get away from lotions. I just don't know if I'm up for making it. I really don't have time. I s there a goo one I can buy out of the store thats already mixed and has no harsh chemicals? I need it really soon!!!! Anyone know? Thnx. I will make my own in the future.

  • @cocowms6 whole foods and Sprouts sells pure whipped shea butter for around $13 for 4 oz

  • Awesome tutorial. Thank you for being so thorough. BTW my fiance and I love your coconut cream concentrate. He uses it for cooking and I use it for my hair.

  • where do i find bora nitrate

  • Great Video!

    Thanks!

  • omg...its looks great and your skin is so beautiful

  • where can i find essential oils having so much trouble locating some

  • @Goldnlyric whole foods stores, vitamin stores, natural medicine stores, etc

  • Can you use mango butter in this recipe as well?

  • Hello, Im trying to buy a scale. Where did you buy that one? How much was it please? Thank you

  • that was a great job. i never heard of some of those powders. will the product stay whipped or will i have to keep it in the fridge

  • It will stay whipped. The rice powder & silica will act as thickeners, and shea butter in it's pure form is hard also. If you don't whip air into it the whole mix becomes quite solid.

  • I see that it all didn't print Ingredients Jojoba oil Grape seed oil Unrefined shea butter French Lavender essential oil Bergamot essential oil Pearl white mica powder adds luster Silica powder to increase glide and reduce oiliness Rice powder (or can use cornstarch) - to increase glide and reduce oiliness Boron Nitride 16 micron - helps make it creamy
  • The consistency should be like cake frosting or a thick meringue. If it is, then it's ready for packaging.

Sorry about having to break it up. They only allow 500 characters at a time. But if you copy these posts backwards, you'll have the recipe. I hope :)

  • After 10 minutes, move speed up one notch and blend for another 10 minutes. Stop and add essential oils.

    ½ t. Bergamot

    ¾ t. French lavender

Slowly bring up speed to level 8. Remove bowl and place in refrigerator for 5 minutes.

Scrape everything down from the sides and off the bottom. Mix on full speed for 5 minutes, stop and scrape sides and bottom again, then whip full speed for another 5 minutes.

  • Add the powders

1 t. pearl white mica powder (loosely packed)

    ½ t. silica powder

    1 level T. rice powder

1 t. Boron Nitride (loosely packed)

Mix with fork until all powder is underneath the oil. If you see a few lumps, dont worry because when you whip it, they will mix in.

Pour into mixer and make sure all powder from the cup is scraped into the bowl. It takes 45 minutes to 55 minutes to whip. Start slow up to level 4 and mix.

  • It's okay if there is some lumps of shea in the cup because it is now soft enough to blend and the heat from the melted oil will continue to soften it.

Next step is to add your carrier oils. You now have 12 oz of melted shea and your end result will be 16 oz. Add 2 oz of grape seed oil and then 2 oz of jojoba oil.

  • Equipment

    Scales

    Fork

    Measuring spoons

    Spatula

    Vinyl gloves

Place Pyrex cup on scale and weigh 11 oz of shea butter. Then set cup of shea into the microwave and set timer for 2 minutes. You don't want the shea to boil or become over heated. (She didn't say anything about what power setting to use so my recommendation is to set the microwaves power to 70% or less to make sure the shea doesn't get too hot.)

  • Could you pls list the ingredients. I had an injury that makes it difficult for me to understand soken words. Thank you

  • Can someone please give me the list of the ingredients and the amounts? English is not my native language :-( and my listening skills are not good, and I would love to try the recipe. Loved this video!

  • I was just wondering, doesn't this process change unrefined shea butter to refined shea butter? There were so many extra ingredients added in!

  • @littlefreco9 adding ingredients doesn't change it into refined shea butter. the refining process involves chemicals that strip it of sediments, scents, and many of the healing properties as well.

  • I think this is a nice recipe for skin but definitely not for hair. All of those additions take away from the properties of the shea. It's not a good idea to completely change the composition/smell of your shea. A little coconut oil/jojoba oil and fragrance will work just fine.

  • @senationalliv actualy I have tried this mix adding oils and cornflour. It was fab. I've moved on to dizzling glycerin. It works g8t in natural hair and on skin. The oil added are good for retaining moisture and healthy scalp. Vit E helps to preserve the mix.

Oils I use Grapeseed, 100% Coconut oil, olive oil etc. The other oils that I use are based on the purpose of my mix. So for skin I'm now trying Kukui oil, calendula oil and cucumber.

  • i did not watch this complete video, if she needs gloves 2 make it, i don't want it newhere near my skin.

  • it's for hygiene purposes more likely. remember they SELL the stuff?

  • You must not have watched hardly any of the video because at 1:51 she mentions why she wore the gloves...

  • She's wearing gloves to keep it sanitary which is important if you're planning on selling or gifting the whipped butter once you're finished making it.

  • @tikitikiboom that is for sanitation purposes. Bacteria from hands can grow in oils. Shea butter is one of the best things on earth you can put on your skin.

  • @tikitikiboom the gloves were for sanitary reasons. Just like when someone makes a sandwhich for you, they wear gloves. Have you never heard of shea butter?

  • The purpose of the gloves was to keep it sanitary, (germ free). Shea butter is very good for your skin.

  • Bergamot stinks, I like rosemary better.

  • Wow, I love the recipe. I just started making butter for my hair and noticed I could use it for skin and nails. I really enjoyed seeing the butter turn a different texture and color with the preservatives. I do need to do some research of my own though. What do you use to add color/change color?

  • can you use this on your hair...

    regards

    kim

  • I believe this recipe is to make the shea butter for skin use, not for hair. That is good, because that's what I want it for.

  • hi, you said the grapeseed oil and jojoba oil have a really long shelf life; i just bought your products from costal scent but they do not have expiry dates so i'm wondering how or when are the products good til??? AND how long will this wipped shea butter good till from the date it's made?

  • Great recipe! Do you think I could use this as a hair conditioner as well?

  • Thank you for this vid. Unlike some, I am not concerned with your colour just your brilliant skill at making something we can both share. Please take no notice of the idiots who can't see past their stupid noses.

  • @Cutchswife Totally agree w/you.

  • Cuz she's a professional! White ain't got nothing to do with it. I'm glad to have viewed this video. Great!!!!!!

  • dammit howd this white lady find out our secret!!

  • Is a preservative needed. I would use Optiphen if needed. its the only non toxic preservative on the market now.

  • optiphen is toxic. It is a skin toxicant. It has caused allergic reactions. The CSD gives a hazard rating of 5.

  • can i just use shea butter and vitamin E oil

  • This is so very informative? I've been trying unsucessfully at making shea butter but mine never looked like this. I was putting in aloe vera gel and all. I have a silly question: Do you use the mixer only for mixing purposes of your butters and if not how do you sanitize the equipment afterwards?

  • cool!!!!

  • how long does the unrefined shea last before consdered expired? does it keep better after being whipped?

  • Unrefined shea butter should last up to 2 yrs. And you don't even have to keep it in the fridge. Just store it in a cool, dry place.

  • i cant find all the ingredients on ur site

  • where can i get the ingredients to make that and how do you package it?

  • omg this looks soooooo fun i'm gna buy this stuff and do it. How would I add color?

  • use a colored mica at very low amounts otherwise your skin will color, too. ask me how I know...

  • @ GoldenGoatLLC:

    Bless your heart! LOL

  • it looks fun, looks like making cake! yummy! lol

anyway, what does shea butter come from??

  • Shea Butter is made out of Shea Nuts.

  • Kudos to you for putting together such a good how-to video on whipped shea butter. Very informative and one of the best on youtube I've seen. Thank you.

    I have two questions though.

    1. You mentioned that you make them in 16oz batches only. Why is that? Can you start with double that quantity?

    2. Do you recommend adding aloe vera gel to the butter?

    Thanks again

  • those powders dnt sound good 4 u...r they naturel products i dnt want chemicalss in my mixture....let me no

  • hello, thank you so much for this video, im planning on buying this ingredients from coastalscents. i was wondering:

i have allergic against mineral makeup unfortunatly. do you think some of these powders will irritate my skin?

are there any of them i can skip, or replace with anything else?

i will be so glad if you answer me, i really wanna make this:)

  • Can I put a bottle of shea butter into boiling water? I have a thing against using microwaves.

  • Yes, this works perfectly.

  • @coastalscents

i agree microwaving is not natural.

  • hmm, I wonder if this whipped shea butter is better than LOCCITANE's shea butter products.

  • Thanks for the tips on a natural body product. Does microwaving the product destroy any positive ingredients?

  • The important part is that the butter does only melt, never boils. You can do the same thing using the oven, its just harder to control and might take some longer.

  • Can I use it on face?

  • Just make sure that you are not allergic to the other ingredients added such as the lavender oil & peppermint oil before applying it to your face.

  • Thanks for the tips, this video was very informative. A friend and I have been making body balms for a while and didn't realize all we needed to do was utilize our mixers to create this wonderful butter.

  • can u please spell the powders?

  • Is it possible to add any color?????

  • Is it safe to use my mixer that I use for cooking to make this? Can I just throw all of my utensils in the dishwasher after I'm done, and use them again to cook meals later on?

  • Of course, make sure they well was hed though!!

  • You really shouldn't microwave the shea butter because it kills some of the healing properties it's better to double boil the shea butter

  • if i make the same amount bach as you did what jar from coastal scents would hold it? pleasee help mee!!

    ~makeuplover

  • Could you tell me what the shelf life of this recipe is?

  • At least 1 year.

  • Awesome.

  • Thanks, Kathy! I'm so excited to try this! I've been buying organic sheabutter lotion at my local organic store, for about 2 1/2 years, & I really love the effect shea butter has had on my skin; natural shea butter is awesome!

I wanted to make some shea butter lotions with various scents, to use for myself, and to give as gifts, but, I didn't know where to begin. This video is just what I was looking for.

Thank you so much! CoastalScents rocks!

    *sparkles*

  • How long does the shea butter last after it's whipped? Does it need preservatives to keep it from going rancid?

  • Good video...I love how she says it's her secret...bet some women in Africa would love to differ.

  • White people always like to claim things from Africa

  • Addictivescents(.com)

  • Where can I buy silica and barnitrite(sp?) powders and those essential oils? Thanks! :)

  • on the coastal scents site you can get some

  • Can you eat it, just a question.

  • What is the difference between raw and unrefined shea butter?

  • That's what I would like to know. I thought unrefined implied that the butter was raw.

  • so did i! then i saw ppl saying they ordered unrefined online/ebay/whatever...and i go to the health food store and don't see such a thing, just raw. i even asked an african brother about unrefined and he hadn't heard of it. crazy part is, of the handful of ppl who have mentioned it, none of them have responded to me. maybe there is in fact, no difference.

  • I have to agree with you. I don't believe there is a difference. I mean, the two words are synonymous. If something is raw then it hasn't been altered in any way-think 'straight from the vine.' That's pretty much the definition of unrefined....I think lol.

  • I bought unrefined from whole foods today. I have no idea what the difference between that and raw. I know that it's very thick.

  • "Unrefined" shea butter is the kind has been extracted without using toxic petrochemicals (which damage the natural healthy benefits of the nut oil) -- Unrefined sheabutter is extracted using natural non-chemical processes that allow the butter to keep it's healthy properties.

  • It is not raw because the shea nut has to be boiled in order to get the butter. It is unrefined because they didn't add any additional additives or chemicals.

  • I've watched so many videos & yours is by far the best!!!!! You make it so easy to understand & follow. I can't wait to try your recipe.

    Aromatic blessings

    Karen

  • This looks great! Just one question, there is no preservative in this, how long will it last before going off?

  • The products used have all a shelf life of at least a year (if bought at a proper place). This means that your finished product will have a shelf life of at least a year to be on the save side.

  • Hi, if I don't care to improve the "glide" are any of the powders really necessary? Can I just use the carrier and essential oils? Do you have any problem with "graininess" or does the heating of the butter take care of that? TIA.

  • I bought shea butter when I was in nigeria and if you use it without heating it up then it doesn't glide well. But once you heat and whip (I just used a stick to stir mine around), you get a nice consistency.

  • will you take an apprentice???

  • Great demonstration! Really clear and helpful!!!

  • sweeeeeeeeet!

  • Where can I find these ingredients? Thanks

  • oops! i dint mean to give your comment a thumbs down.

  • Oh well it's not the end of the world. Don't worry about it lovely.

  • I heard Boron Nitride can irritate sensitive skin. Is this true? What can I use instead?

  • Boron Nitride should be very fine with sensitive skin, its used as great alternative to bismuth oxychloride. So far we had no negative reaction on any customers.

  • ok, thank you!

  • ur beautiful! love your skin. what do you use?

  • How did you get from 11 ounces of microwaved butter, to 12 ounces of clear?

  • The 11 ounces is weight on the scale, the 12 onces is liquid ounces.

  • wow, i need to get some of that! Good job

  • great video, but one thing i learned.. refined shea has no healing quality whatsoever... if you want to really take advantage of shea is to use the unrefined stuff dirrectly to the skin...

  • This is why we do use only unrefined shea butter in our process. Whipping just makes it different, but keeps the healing properties.

  • But doesn't the shea butter lose its properties once the structure has been changed by heating?

  • What a Great Instructional Video!...I saw your other video earlier today on how to make Bath Bombs which is Great Also!..Thanks so much!

  • Your whipped shea butter looks nice, but looking at the MSDS for Boron Nitride, it is an irritant and toxic. What will the butter feel/look like w/o it?

  • Hi what's the consistency? Is it like cream lotion?

  • Its like a cream, not as liquid as a lotion.

  • Is your shea butter organic too?

  • Yes, Shea Butter is 100% organic!
