A deeply occult film in the masonic tradition, it is chock full of masonic imagery & symbolism.

Of note is the famous statue scene where haunting reference is made to Charles III (Duke of Bourbon, 1490-1527) who was tried for treason for plotting against the king of France. According to the book, "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", Charles III was the 13th Grand Master of the Priory of Sion.

The screenwriter, Alain Robbe-Grillet, was trained as an engineer & took a degree in agronomy.

This extremely strange film is one of the most wonderful pieces of art created in the medium. It doesn't need explaining, it simply requires that you experience it in all its beauty and dream-like logic. It is an exquisitely filmed dream, really.
