there's a throttle which allows you to go up, down, or hover.

but you did see that he was holding the controller in his hand off to the side, not working the throttle, and the title is called autonomous hover so it is flying by it's self adjusting control by itself

My guess is that it is programmed not to fly higher than a certain height. I would guess that the rangefinder would reduce throttle when it got to that height.

Of course I don't really know. That's just my guess.

My guess is that he has a height setpoint programmed into it. The PID control loop attempts to maintain flight at that setpoint based on height feedback from the ultrasonic sensor.

not that much at all...just the helicopter (200$), range sensor (40$), PIC micro-controller (40$), some wires, resistors, capacitors..etc
