I think this song is about a guy who was led on. He was crazy about her and she acted like she was just as crazy about him. Then one day he realizes that she really doesn't even want a relationship and just wanted to be friends all along (hence this wasted so many nights and again I've wasted so much time on a friend) but he was (too young, too proud) to see that she really didn't feel the same.
