I love this movie. I love that it portrays how closed-minded some individuals can be concerning immigrants. And it totally pissed me off that the boys in the school irrationally compared Fadi to Osama Bin Laden, as if all Americans could be compared to George Bush or Barack Obama. If there's one thing I cannot stand, it's racism.
Overall, this is a really great movie that depicts the life of an immigrant just trying to make a good life in the USA for herself and her son. I really enjoyed it.
I wish people would be more open to outsiders and immigrants. Not just from Palestine but from everywhere. People come to America for a better life because sometimes its pretty shitty back at 'home'. We all just want a chance, and prejudice, ignorance and racism makes it seem as if there isnt a place for some of us.
@spanishissofun Funny cause most people wouldn't know a terrorist if they blew them up. Ok i know, it's a bad joke. but seriously they're too busy being scared-straight about Iran, Syria, and Al-Qaeda to focus on the real issues.
@HelloMyNameIssssss it's :Jwaz Al Saffar(Passport)by:Marseel Khaleefa it says:" they didn't recognise me in the Shadows that suck away my colours to the passport"the lyrics is so sweet , it's a poem By:Mahmoud Darwish a Palistenian Poet who born there but lived his whole life outside Palestine, his poems are about Home and howmuch he miss hisfamily, and thbread that his mom used to bake for him, died in 2008 after his heart surgery in Huston.
if u need a translation i can help you with that :)
This movie is slanderous to Illinois. Especially near the Chicago metropolitan area because there are immigrants from all over the world. People are not beat up in school for being an arab immigrant. They should have set it in a different state or area where it's more believable.
@eujeeves I did not know that, but the film is based in suburban Chicago, while the website says it related to the directors life in rural Illinois. Chicago area is not the same as rural Illinois. I just don't want my city to be associated with discrimination like this because it has one of the biggest Arab and ethnic populations in the country and is very friendly to different people and cultures.
@zOMGLaserGunzPewPew Everyone needs to understand that the film was set in a context of post-911 and during the American invasion in Iraq (2002-2003). I'm pretty sure that most of the western world would have been in a state of uncertainty or fear toward 'arabic' looking people. So maybe people of surbaban Chicago aren't like that, but this film is not trying to show that they are, it is trying to show the absence of belonging within a foreign land, and the obstacles that come with it.
@dangerislander I agree. I mean even a a few hours drive south of Chicago there was heavy anti-Muslim and Arabic attitudes. I was just not happy seeing my home portrayed this way.
This is a movie all immigrants and their chidlren should watch together and learn. Also recommended for people trying to study acculturation. This movie applies to all modern day immigrants not just those from a certain country. Kudos to the producers.
I'm not Palestinian, but I'm arab. I cried so hard while watching this movie. I know how it feels to be an outsider in a new country being homesick, and confused,
This movie wasn't meant to bring a heated debate about who took what from whom. It's just about the strength of family, and the struggles of living in a different country. Please cut the political debate. This is not the forum for it.
This was such a pleasent movie to watch even though the ending made me want more. For the sake of everyone's sanity lets cut the political discussion. -_-
