In my opinion, games like this age better than early examples of hardware rendering, like Test Drive 3. If you sped up the gameplay just a little bit, it would actually look pretty good, while Test Drive Three, with its wireframes, looks like an early assignment for a computer animation class.
interesting to see them use the pre-88 Crown Vic--that was incredibly accurate--as the cop car. The '88 had taller taillights and a different grille. Not bad and very realistic!
If the dashboard could shake a little bit when we rapidly start or brake; if there would be some cool hands with drivig gloves on the driving wheel; if there would be a sound effect when we pass a car; if the other cars would have sides; if there would be at least fake road junctions; if there would be more and better screnery props; if there would be a real 2 player mode, I would call this game not just awesome, but the most perfect game i've ever played!
No game could give back the Test Drive 2 feeling. But Need for Speed 1 is very close to it (in fact, it is developed by EA Canada, the sucessor of DSI, what developed TD2)
Much of 1991 was squandered by me playing this game!! This is really, really classic! So what it's not the fancy ass pseudo realistic games of today, this has got an innocence and honesty that they don't have! Even touches of humour in it!
Hard to believe that this game is 20 years old! Only seems like yesterday since I was playing this in earnest! It was a fantastic game at the time.
Nonetheless, it's dated rather badly and it demonstrates how far games have developed in this time period. For example, how many frames per second is this running? 5? It's very sluggish now.
Yet, it was the precursor of games like Need for Speed and therefore deserves massive amounts of credit.
@Jimbo8012 It's hard to understand that this game is 20 years old because time is just a number. The fact of the matter is that Amiga is still the same, Test Drive 2 is still the same. Time is just a number.

how do i play this game on my computer? i want a free download, or just play it now for free, i wish i was a computer nerd.... Pleeeeezzzzzzeeeee hellppppp meeee i neeeeedddd toooo play this game..... thanx
I used to think this was realistic way back when...funny to watch it now and see how far things have come. And since when did gas stations sell juggling supplies? wtf? :)
Aside from the controls being sluggish, it was fun to play. You could get cars and tracks disks that let you play a few different cars and different courses.
Forgot about this game, which for once is a true classic for both Amiga and MS-DOS users. But what happened at 10:25? There was absolutely no obstacle you had to avoid that made you crash.
i played this game a lot b.i.t.d, completed it once or twice.
remember being amazad by the intro, the graphics and the speech!
and then after playing it for around 2 years, one day i discovered you could also drive the red ferrari as well as the porsche. that was a very exciting day! (yeh deprived childhood)

My older Brother was so good in computers that he actually built his own car and put his face on it. He built a mustang instead of the ferrarri!!!

@Jimbo8012 Most moderm games on the actual machine are eactly 5FPS. so nothing changed, static screen in colorful magazine rules.

This game has a world high score contest website. Do a search on google on geocitiesdude2/td2. I'm still 2nd on the European Challenge B)

Awesome game, I remember it well.
When I switched from Amiga to PC around 1996, one of the first games I played was Need for Speed. It was like Test Drive on steroids :-)
NFS owes a lot to this classic.
