  • In the small town where I lived - if you heard this at the end of the night you were in the wrong dance club - how sad is that, but I love this song so much - cause one night I went to that dance club and heard this for the first time and was blown away, couldn't believe I had never heard it before xx

  • First seen the Cryin Shames and heard this song at the Grave in Liverpool off Dale St.Brilliant

  • Where did this clip come from, talk about rare? Is it Where the Action Is (they did a special from London in 1966)? As a kid I remember my sister playing this over and over again, but no wonder - it is a great song. It reached the UK top 30 in 1966.

  • @likethesong1. I feel for you...the only person that is with you all your life is yourself so make the most of it. maybe he just needs the time apart. good luck with the rest of your life and do what you feel like doing.

  • I loved this song then and still loveit.

  • Produced by the legendary record producer Joe Meek. Years ago I met one of Joe's brothers in Gloucester who told me that this was Joe's particular favourite of all the recordings that he made, even more than Telstar.

  • This is by far my favourite song ever.

I wan't disclose my age, but I inherited a lot of vinyl from my Grandfather about 3 years ago and am an avid user of hypem.com, and never have I discovered a song as beautiful as this in my life.

  • What a completely UNinspired film. I don't think they could have been more boring if they'd tried. (but I like their music).

  • @shuchr Totally agree!!! It was the best 'Lumber Number' at the dancin' in the 60s

  • @55tinker yes I agree, this and `Kelly ` by del Shannon were usually the last two songs , it was make or break time for a lumber. LOL.

  • In loving memory of my mum who sadly passed away on 18th October 2010 R.I.P

  • The Chicago group sounds like British rockers on this However this doesnt hold a candle to The Drifters early sixties version...

  • I had the pleasure of sharing a few drinks with Charlie Crane in my local back in the eighties. He was a really nice bloke - back then I didn't appreciate 60's music as I do now let alone know who Joe Meek was!

  • Growing up in Glasgow going to Queen Victoria Drive school and listening to songs like this....beatles...stones..small faces..poets..the who...being a mod..getting your first scooter..lambretta 125..parkas...going to the international in Edinburgh seeing the Small Faces..going to Balloch to see The Who...Manfred Mann...theres no point in looking back but by Christ these were the days that you will never forget..

  • 100 procentní!

  • Sorry, turned it off at 1.13

  • I remember this used to be the last song of the night on every dance floor in Britain in the 60s and most of the 70s .. snoggin time for couples!

  • One of my wee ma's fave's

p.s always thought it was a bird that sang this.

  • Oh! Now I want a slow dance on a moonlit night. Very sweet.

  • The audio quality reminds me of medium wave pirate radio, lol. my favs were radio london and radio caroline. it was only on the pirates - and maybe radio luxembourg, that we heard this song.

  • Good song but these aren't the Cryin Shames that I grew up with., The Sugar and Spice", guys.

  • @RideswithChuck This is The Cryin' Shames (an English band), not The Cryan' Shames (a band from Chicago).

  • @DrusillaC

    Ditto...

  • I can't believe how good this sounds having not heard it for nealry 40 years!

  • To: RGMsound

I don't think there is a higher quality version of this video. Keep in mind that in 1966 there were no small sophisticated cameras like we have now. This was probably shot on 16mm film and then broadcast to America on an early version of videotape and from there taped off the air. Some quality would have been lost right there back in 1966 from that process. We should be thankful that this version survived because so much of the early music videos have been lost.

  • I am desperate to get this high quality on dvd (not downloaded from youtube), can anybody please help?

  • @TheRgmsound did you have any luck?

  • Brilliant song, great to see such a rare video, excellent.

  • Beautiful song, great Meek production on that voice, and a great group who deserved MUCH greater attention nationally.

  • Brilliant! Always loved it since this one was first released.

  • The definitive version by the Shames. Duffy's arrangement recognises this and follows it so closely. I admit to some bias though; George Robinson is my Uncle and my Dad was their driver/roadie/manager for some time. He had a mobile disco well into the 1990's known as 'Shames Disco". It is a great song though and will always be remembered as "theirs" whoever performs it.

  • brilliant what a tune!don't make 'em like this anymore sadly

  • my mum and dad used to sing this song to each other ,now they are both dead and its a really goood memory.good song means alot to me but different meanings to other people. good times through the years .

  • such a great uberkitsch-classic by joe.

  • I have been looking for this for years. As so many before me have said, the last dance. My first love, Colin, met at the shows in Lanark on the waltzers a long time ago and long gone. but the song has stayed. Fantastic memories.

  • i was with a girl and she had to leave to go with another i played this song as she was leaving....she came back and we'll soon be married...god bless.. funny how she hates this song now....women..never understand you!!!

  • R.I.P. Joe Meek

  • Memorable Burt Bacharach / Bob Hilliard

song......Great production by Joe Meek !!!

........i just love this version !!!

  • what happened to the rest of the band and what do they do now

  • rest in peace charlie crane

  • And so say all of us. My youth died with him and I,m still in mourning.

  • I can't stop playing this since I heard Duffy singing it.

    Brings back great memories ;-)

  • Oh that song and those vocals - fell in love with it after hearing it on holiday in Barmouth - it was being played at the fairground and I was about 12 I think. Oh happy days and the best of music was just really starting. Bought the record years later as I did with a lot of my sixties stuff. Singles were 6/8p which was 1 third of an old British pound and the exact same amount as a dollar then!!! Hippy Sue basking in nostalgia with UTube. Very sad to hear that Charlie has gone. RIP x

  • funny everybody remembers it

mind you we never had the money

    to buy it then

  • You're dead right there! I was 16 and still at school but my brother & I had a band called Minerva, and we always sang it as aour last song. Loved the band, loved the song and can't believe they never became more famous!!! LOVED THEM !!!

  • So great to see this! I worked with Charlie in the late 70's and thoroughly enjoyed working with him. He hadn't changed much, Fantastic sense of fun.

I remember he used to support the 'Toffees' and I'd pull his leg.

I was devastated when I learned he was gone. I will always associate this song with Charlie especially as he sang it to me pitch perfect in the office! He is one scouser who will be missed by an awful lot of people. God bless Charlie.

  • I remember dancing to this when I was 13 at the Glen Cairn Youth Club in Pollocksheilds. It was always the last song. Oh to be 13 again...

  • you got that right AWESOME SONG AWESOME VOCALS AH MEMORIES

  • I had not seen him since I was a kid, 35 years or so but he was fabulous then. A ton of fun and very happy then. I live in the US so it was tough to see relatives in England

  • I do not have any pics, my mother does his sister that is but she has no pc and wouldnt part with a pic for 1 second

  • What a shame, I would have liked to see how he turned out. Was he as sweet as an uncle as he looked when he was young?

  • That is Charlie Crane My Uncle!!

  • As a 15 year old back in 1966, I adored this song and fell madly in love with Charlie, he was so cute. On rediscovering the song here on youtube, I was reminded why I liked him so much. I started searches to see what he was doing nowadays, only to discover he was no longer with us, I just can't get over it, I have a real sense of mourning, so I play the song and watch him in the video every day. Have you got any videos or pictures of him when he was older, that you can put on the tube?

  • brilll. if u were stuck when it came to last dance - this did it!

  • Takes me back to my youth. This was part of the traditional last dance set at Locarnos & Meccas all over the country in the late 1960s - shame about the 'video' which destroys the emotion. It's great that Duffy has revitalised such a great song.

  • The fun I had after this song on a Sat night A brillant song

  • really good what a good song

  • this is the best ever recording of this song .i think duffy murdered it.

  • THAT'S JOE MEEK PRODUCTION!

  • This bring back some very good memories brillant song

  • cannot remember this group having any other hits or even records but this one is fantastic.

  • The amount of time I managed to pull to this song in the Barrowland in the 60s

  • Jonathan Butler/ Little Ronnie Joyce did a killer version of this song in South Africa in the 70's. Pity we dont have that video. This is good also.

  • I remember this song well a fantastic last dance at the Bostock club in Dunfermline in the early 70's happy days !

  • AWESOME SONG AWESOME VOCALS AWESOME BRITS end of story

  • This was absolutely a "must play' for the last dance at dances in West Coast scotland for most of the late 60's. Thanks for the memories.
