I apologize for all who may find this cruel, but I find the way these children die somewhat comical. First of all, a child died of ennui. (a typical exaggeration in this day and age) And second, Olive was practically playing with that awl. It may be screwed up, but I really do get Edward Gorey's dark sense of humor.

I remember one story in which he created a character for himself, which, for no particular reason, was abruptly crushed by an urn at the very end of the story.

The thug in question is a thugee, who were an Indian sect who killed people for the goddess Kali. Not 'thug' in a colloquial modern sense. So yes he is Indian, because the thugee thugs were.
