I can't seem to do this, When I go to Thomas after canceling the buy grass and the talking stops I hit ps3 start button and the inventory drops down. So do I hit the start button when he stops talking? or the square button to activate nexial binding? I must be a moron cuz I can't get it to work.

You're get it soon enough, try pressing the cricle button a few times repeatedly intill your character's animation is done. But you were able to duplicate right? Your have way there.
