If the kids had a flashing red light then the officer also had a flashing red light. However it appears that it was a flashing yellow light to me, albeit is black and white footage. However at 94 mph = 137.866667 feet per second those kids probably never saw him approaching the intersection, with no emergency lights activated in a 40 mph zone at night. I cannot judge this former officers actions formally, but i can say that in my opinion, it looks like pure negligence. Very sad indeed. Poor kids
The cop has already been cited as being at fault. He was doing 94 in a 40MPH zone for no reason other than reckless horseplay. He was racing with the other officer. Officer Jason Anderson has been fired and is awaiting trial for 2 counts of manslaughter in the death of the 2 teens. Neither officer was responding to a police call of any type, they were returning from a previous call when the crash occured. His speed (94MPH) was confirmed by the "black box" computer on his police cruiser.
The cop came around a corner at night, in the SLOW LANE going nearly 100 mph. The car the teens were in was making a conventional left turn in a 35 - 45 mph zone. Doesn't matter who you are, or if you were drunk, high or sober... You would have been hit, just as they did.

The bottom line is, the guy was drunk(0.13 BAC) and turned right in front of the cop. Even if the cop was doing 40, it would still have been a close call. Anybody behind the wheel should be able to judge a cars aprox speed and realize he did'nt have time to make the turn. Yes,the cop did a bonehead move but because of the drunkin guy's move him and his girlfriend are dead and a guy's life is ruined.

A) the car with camera was at one point traveling 72 mph, which means the other officer was traveling at a minimum of 75 mph - without lights.

I know this intersection very well...you have to pull forward just a little to make that left turn to avoid the right lane at dogwood and Rte 1....the teens did turn but were they in the intersection as they turned? they did commit to the turn before the cop entered the intersection.....that could play a role in responsibility

Simple answer.... Cop wrong, teens right. As has been said many times over, why in the world would ANYONE expect an oncoming car would be going over twice the speed limit? Most of us would have made that same turn and been rewarded with a horrifying death. The cop was NOT responding to a call so any argument to protect him is wasted time. Left turns are quite dangerous in some places. As for cops vs. teens... the cop is wrong and teens are right, as you said. People turn in the face of incoming traffic all the time, because incoming traffic is always incoming in some places. (Not here, though). Most law enforcement vehicles DO have identifier numbers on the trunk or on the license plate. There are times that they are speeding and CAN'T employ their lights/siren for obvious reasons. A speed readout would inundate law enforcement with baseless complaints based only on a person's claim that there was no need for them to be speeding. Ohio has a "marked car" law. ALL law enforcement vehicles used for traffic enforcement MUST be marked with a non-removable beacon on the roof of the car.
The other vehicle that was involved, was not at fault. They made the decision to turn, based on where the police car was.
Had the police car kept it's original speed, there would have been no accident. About a hundred feet before the intersection, the police car speeds up. The other person had already begun to make their turn.

The video car was traveling in excess of the posted limit. It was a 40 zone and the video car was traveling over 60 as seen at the top of the video readout. The other cop car was pegged at 94mph which is where the speedometer froze during the collision (according to the AP.) Emergency light and siren laws vary from state to state. I don't know what Conn. law is.
Locustkilla....Maximise the screen, pause at 23s (keep it on pause). LOOK at the position of vehicle A (Teens), which had not begun to turn yet. Now look at position of vehicle B (Patrol car) and B's position from the intersection and more importantly distance from A, B was either about to cross or had just crossed the stop line when A started to turn.

Yes I would be upset, that does not change the evidence, which is that that the teens turned AS the patrol car entered the intersection. There is no way in hell the driver would not have seen him. Lets assume the patrol car was at the same position (because the position of both vehicles is crucial just prior to the teens turning into intersection), but traveling at 55mph This accident would still have happened, and at 55mph its very likely the teens would not have survived either

And... Yes, I was a cop. Was in law enforcement for 17 years. I left the job because their WAS abuse of power and in some rare cases, what the public was told was NOT what actually happened. However, this is usually the exception and NOT the rule.
The Federal Government (not that I trust everything they say) conducted a blind study and found that less than one half of one percent of police officers were corrupt. In the case of this cop, he has no excuse other than he thought he was allowed to do as he pleased. I certainly hope that the families of the victims sue the crap out of this officer and the command staff that allowed him to go un-checked.

The bottom line is, the guy was drunk(0.13 BAC) and turned right in front of the cop. Even if the cop was doing 40, it would still have been a close call. Anybody behind the wheel should be able to judge a cars aprox speed and realize he did'nt have time to make the turn. Yes,the cop did a bonehead move but because of the drunkin guy's move him and his girlfriend are dead and a guy's life is ruined.

He was driving like everyone else in Connecticut people. Have you been on I-84 lately? Cops here don't care about traffic offenses until their captains bitch enough about it. I hope he gets off completely free. All he needs is a jury of his peers to say that the other car was turning too slowly and thats why he hit it.

P.S. The cop also went to court last week and turned down a plea bargin. I honestly feel that if he takes this to trial he is going away for a long long time.

All left turns at flashing yellows are considered stops for just this reason. Sucks they're dead , but they should not have made that illegal turn.

@4624tone < The crash was CAUSED by the little car entering the path of the speeding car. Not saying the Ford should not have been speeding, but going fast is NOT what caused the crash. By your logic, every time a car goes 94 MPH two teens die!!??!! Had the little car NOT driven in front of the speeder, the speeder would have not crashed into them and continued on it's way. Objects stay in motion till they're stopped asshole.

And early in the morning they usually dont use lights and sirens cause there is barley cars on the road... lights and sirens are used to warn drives to move outta the way.

I forgot the name i think its EVOC training? any emergency vehicle doesnt fly threw intersections or red lights they yield to check if everyone has come to a complete stop and they move on. Ive worked with cops and been in plenty ride alongs. I know all this stuff. Cops have to use Lights and sirens or Either CODE 3 to get to the scene of the crime MORNING or Night no matter the time.

NO hot lights going at the time of the accident. Yellow lights flashing both ways. Cop car going fast than estimated timing for the speed in the area. I'm think the cop car should have slowed down at the intersection because of not being hot. The first intersection the cop car going threw was to fast in my observation of speed on that type of city streets.

All that we can tell from this video is that:
A) the car with camera was at one point traveling 72 mph, which means the other officer was traveling at a minimum of 75 mph - without lights.
B) He struck another vehicle.
Seems like all we can reasonabaly conclude is that the road probably was not suited for 70+ mph. W/out using his lights he made an error in judgement. Police can make mistakes too as they are also human. End of story for YOUTUBE. let's move on, people.

I have 20/20 sight and I am not seeing some things people claim to "see" - I do not see a posted speed limit. I can not differentiate the victim's headlights from their turn signals.
It is safe to say the speed limit could be no more than 40-50mph.
The cop was driving recklessly at 40+ mph OVER the speed limit without FLASHERS/SIREN. He was NOT responding to a call.
Baring something like his accelerator being stuck, he is plain and simply a murderer.

there are no green lights at night, this is CT not the rest of the world. All green lights are flashing and yellow cautionary lights (seriously) having driven this road many times I can tell you 94 miles is fast as hell! I read the local paper the next morning and it was stated that the officer was on his way to provide assistance at a call outside of Milford.

Bottom line is, they were BOTH at fault. The cop, for driving that fast (and with no lights on), and the driver of the other vehicle, who didn't pay close enough attention to oncoming traffic. That was my take on this from the get-go. In the very small town where I live, there are 8 full time police officers. ALL of them have a bad reputation because of ONE that is a bad cop. I know this intersection very well...you have to pull forward just a little to make that left turn to avoid the right lane at dogwood and Rte 1....the teens did turn but were they in the intersection as they turned? they did commit to the turn before the cop entered the intersection.....that could play a role in responsibility

Simple answer.... Cop wrong, teens right. As has been said many times over, why in the world would ANYONE expect an oncoming car would be going over twice the speed limit? Most of us would have made that same turn and been rewarded with a horrifying death. The cop was NOT responding to a call so any argument to protect him is wasted time. Trying to cover it up just makes it that much worse. Cops like this one are the reason all cops end up with a bad reputation.

Left turns are quite dangerous in some places. As for cops vs. teens... the cop is wrong and teens are right, as you said. People turn in the face of incoming traffic all the time, because incoming traffic is always incoming in some places. (Not here, though). Nonetheless, the cop appears to be at fault here, despite the southpaw-turn.

All police cars should be fitted with a speed monitoring device, with a little sign in their rear window displaying their speed.
Next to that should be their car number, in big letters.

Most law enforcement vehicles DO have identifier numbers on the trunk or on the license plate. There are times that they are speeding and CAN'T employ their lights/siren for obvious reasons. A speed readout would inundate law enforcement with baseless complaints based only on a person's claim that there was no need for them to be speeding. Ohio has a "marked car" law. ALL law enforcement vehicles used for traffic enforcement MUST be marked with a non-removable beacon on the roof of the car.

The other vehicle that was involved, was not at fault. They made the decision to turn, based on where the police car was.
Had the police car kept it's original speed, there would have been no accident. About a hundred feet before the intersection, the police car speeds up. The other person had already begun to make their turn.

It was not an accident, it was a crash. Big difference. That's why he has been charged with reckless driving and 2 counts manslaughter. He has to live with what he did. If it were me, I could not live with it!

The fact that their lights weren't on suggests that they were not in an official pursuit. The law states that a police vehicle may only exceed the speed limit by ten miles an hour. Leeway is given to allow for life threatening situations. It looks to me as if the faster police car was indeed traveling above what is allowed by law.

The video car was traveling in excess of the posted limit. It was a 40 zone and the video car was traveling over 60 as seen at the top of the video readout. The other cop car was pegged at 94mph which is where the speedometer froze during the collision (according to the AP.) Emergency light and siren laws vary from state to state. I don't know what Conn. law is.

Locustkilla....Maximise the screen, pause at 23s (keep it on pause). LOOK at the position of vehicle A (Teens), which had not begun to turn yet. Now look at position of vehicle B (Patrol car) and B's position from the intersection and more importantly distance from A, B was either about to cross or had just crossed the stop line when A started to turn.

nobody's blaming the victim moron. lets say this was a typical accident and nobody died. car 1 would get a ticket for failing to yield, and car 2 would get a ticket for speeding. both are wrong.

WRONG! car 2 would get arrested for driving 90+ mph in a 35 zone, get his license pulled and charged with manslaughter. car 2 was nearly a block away when car 1 committed to the turn. thats PLENTY of distance. nobody scans the road past a city block when negotiating a turn in the city! pay attention to your own driving. do you seriously sit at an intersection and wait for cars a block away assuming theyre doing nearly 100 mph?he even had plenty of time to turn in front of the other cop doing 70+

I reckon the 'innocent' teens are also to blame, driving without due care. The teen driver should have seen the on-coming lights, I dont think he excercised due care, but hey, anything to have a go at a cop, no I'm not one, nor am I exceptionaly fond of them.

Yes I would be upset, that does not change the evidence, which is that that the teens turned AS the patrol car entered the intersection. There is no way in hell the driver would not have seen him. Lets assume the patrol car was at the same position (because the position of both vehicles is crucial just prior to the teens turning into intersection), but traveling at 55mph This accident would still have happened, and at 55mph its very likely the teens would not have survived either

If one acts like an asshole they should expect to be treated like one. How many people have died because of gangs? How many people have died because some drug abuser needed a fix and robbed a store or mugged someone? How many people have died because of criminal activity?

And... Yes, I was a cop. Was in law enforcement for 17 years. I left the job because their WAS abuse of power and in some rare cases, what the public was told was NOT what actually happened. However, this is usually the exception and NOT the rule.

The Federal Government (not that I trust everything they say) conducted a blind study and found that less than one half of one percent of police officers were corrupt. In the case of this cop, he has no excuse other than he thought he was allowed to do as he pleased. I certainly hope that the families of the victims sue the crap out of this officer and the command staff that allowed him to go un-checked.

94 MPH !! Not on an emergency call !! WTF was he thinking !! Lawmen are not above the law (traffic or criminal). He should be charged with vehicular homicide. He took an oath of office to protect the public, not run over other vehicles and kill people. I hope he gets the maximum sentence.
