  • LOve it Great job! John.

  • I dig it

  • its sad when people steal other people's ideas and take credits for it...

  • bravo!

  • John Legend should have covered the song, it would have been great. Instead, by simply adding new lyrics and passing it off as new he disrespected Dennis Yost, the Classics IV and disgraced himself.

  • @RNGomez Of all the comments I've seen, yours has to be the best. You hit the nail on the head! Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • For all doubters...John Legend did have permission to do this...he paid respects to Dennis Yost...comments 2 years ago will show his wife thanking John for remembering her husband

  • @cdwilson50 Sorry, you are sorely mistaken. Mrs. Linda Yost never mentioned John Legend nor addressed any comments to him. In fact, she had thanked me -- not John -- for having made this video. Here is the actual message she had posted to ME:

Thank you for honoring my husband with this video. Dennis was all about keeping the music alive, that's why The Classics IV will go on and on.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Dennis (Linda) Yost

  • @VidBrats Oh ok...I knew she was happy with someone...sorry for my mistake

  • NICE TRIBUTE TO DENNIS YOST,,,,HE REALLT IS SUPERIOR TO JOHN LEGEND, AND MOST OTHERS THEN AND NOW DEEZILL

  • Hard to believe I made this mashup a week before Dennis Yost passed away. Also hard to believe that YouTube was barely three years old and lacked High-Def at the time. Otherwise, I would've made it in HD... but this version seems to have withstood the test of time. Thanks all!

  • @VidBrats everything old is new again...love it

  • Is that a young cornelius bumphus on Sax/ who finished w steely dan before he passed on???

  • @aspire1594 It's Ray Jarrell on alto. (Incidentally, Mike Shapiro wrote the solo for "Stormy" but wasn't available the day they did the final cut.)

  • Linda música! Tudo passa...as tempestades tb!

  • I'm an old fart that saw Dennis in Jacksonville before the Classics IV. Always loved his voice. John Legend is a great contemporary singer. I've shared this mashup and everybody, young and old, love it. Good songs and voices never go out of style.

  • Awesome Rendition..... I love this song!.They sound remarkable together!!! Thanks for Sharing!!!

  • do you an mp3 of this?

  • @R37R0V1N7463 No, and I would be violating YouTube's Terms of Service (TOS) in providing a direct link to a mp3. However, google search Free-YouTube-to-MP3-Converter and you can create your own.

  • @VidBrats I didn't want to have to do that but I guess I will, the mixing is done so well, I'm really impressed

  • @VidBrats I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that, you mixed the 2 so well

  • OMG !! I picked up on that the first time I heard John Legend's song.I knew it was from a Classic song " Storm".

  • Nice mash-up and proof that John Legend did not really create an original song with Save Room..

Reality check: Save Room is just John Legend's re-make of the classic 70's hit "Stormy". If you doubt this, just search for the song Stormy on YouTube.

My guess is that the copyright on the music for Stormy ran out and John Legend's people bought it up, gave it new lyrics and called it an original tune. I hardly doubt that a melody and chord progression written in the early 1970's is "fresh", yo!

  • I am just curious did John Legend get permission from the band for his song.? It's entirely based on stormy by classics iv. Back in the day George Harrison was sued by the Chiffons for My Sweet Lord borrowing too much from their song "He's so Fine. and they won and ironically when they perform "He's so fine" in concert they segue in to "My Sweet Lord" adding insult to injury. They profitted from Harrisons unfortunate borrowing of their melody. And got paid twice.?

  • In our words here.. TSADA KAAYO- a very nice song with John Legend as vocalist...

  • Lindo John Legend colocar outra letra nesta musica tão linda. Adorei!

  • ITS BERNIE MAC ON THE SAX

  • @blindescape01 LOL you're funny. Sure looks like him. It's actually Ray Jarrell.

  • @VidBrats thank you for introducing me to John Legend. I thought his music was too soft like Luther Vandross or Al Jarreau. Once again is just as good as Whats goin on or Al Green

  • @VidBrats Oh and Ray doesn't have the BIG eyes

  • Legend lied .... that's why u DON'T HEAR ABOUT how Classics ate that album sales alive for samplin' their shit ..... bet he will do research next time .....

  • I love Dennis and John! Both very talented singers. This mix is awesome!

  • Boooooo! Shameless plagiarist John Legend.

  • @boyblue1171 I agree!

  • Dear Yoube friends The 60's and 70's were amazing years. Mr. Dennis Yost and the Classics 4 were and are wonderful. I can remember claerly 1969 Midnight and Stormy and I have not forgoten them since then.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH MR. YOST. THANK YOU VERY MUCH CLASSICS 4. WE MISS YOU SO MUCH. PLEASE COME BACK. GOD BLESS YOU.

(PLEASE PEOPLE STOP KILLING ANIMALS!STOP EATING MEAT!STOP WEARING FUR/LEATHER!THNAKYOUADEMAR)

  • Had the original 45 when I was a kid and simply love this smash-up.

  • I thought this would be dumb but I loved it.

  • BMI (Broadcast Music Incorporated), like its counterpart ASCAP, is responsible for licensing, enforcing and collecting royalty distributions and fees on copyrighted songs on behalf of songwriters such as Buddy Buie.

  • Linda, in spite of all the naysayers who refuse to give credit where credit is due, your late husband Dennis was an original and will remain so for posterity! Incidentally, my 2nd all-time fave song by Dennis was "Everyday With You Girl."

  • Nice MASHUP video... both songs are classics.

SAVE ROOM may have been inspired by STORMY, but it is a completely different song. The melody uses the same time and John Legend sings with a similar, laid back swooning vocal style... but the music and lyrics to SAVE ROOM are completely different.

SAVE ROOM is a beautiful song... but the official video (of him sleeping with many different women) is in very poor taste. Putting him in the same league as many of todays' "womanizing" black rappers.

  • @Forkmeister Quoting John Legend: "Kanye West brought the sample (of "Stormy"). I didn't even know the original. I just knew it was a nice organ sound and wanted to write to it. I just started mumbling along to it, finding my place in the melody and it worked for me." "Stormy" did indeed serve as the musical backing track for "Save Room," earning Buddy Buie (one of the Classics IV's most prolific songwriters) a songwriting credit on John Legend's "Save Room."

  • @VidBrats Inspired by... perhaps (what isn't these days?), but not the same song,. SORRY

  • @Forkmeister "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" and "God Save the Queen"... Different lyrics, same melody. It was in fact jazz keyboardist Gabor Szabo's cover of "Stormy" that -- in your words -- "inspired" "Save Room." Regardless, "Save Room" is not an original. Had it been so, Buddy Buie would not have received a songwriting credit under the terms of BMI policies, to which Legend and his label, Sony Music, consented. SORRY

  • that makes alot of sense that john legen didnt even know the song stormy shows he doesnt know good music he listens to crap.and his music is crap too.

  • @jayfey77 Yes, it could not possibly be a "total coincidence" that John used all of the same chords, melody, phrasing... Boo! I love John's voice but he should let the world know that he borrowed the music... and he should give some serious bucks to Dennis Yost's family!

  • @HunterMann amen hunter.

  • John gave credit to the original songwriter,

I picked up on it the first time I heard the song.

  • I was on Andrea Gilmore's facebook and saw this tribute to Dennis and The Classics IV, I LOVE IT! Could you please reply to me, I have something I'd like

    to check out with you.

What an awesome Father's Day gift for DY and Gilmore.

    God Bless you,

    Mrs. Dennis(Linda)Yost

  • John Legend sample Gabor szabo version actually listen to Gabor Szabo's Stormy

  • It's good for the Yost estate, but c'mon this guy John Legend is bland and soul-less compared to Yost who really has something... Legend is telephoning it in... can't the guy come up with some original melody and a meaningful lyric? Answer: No. ironic how it always used to be african american musicians getting ripped off by white guys capitalizing on their souls... now its the other way around.

  • @billeetoThere is no Yost estate.Dennis never got airplay royalties, downloads get 1cent per.Have been saving for 3yrs for filing fees for Dennis Yost Severe Brain Trauma Foundation"Awakening"and still need $850 for IRS filing fees.DY got nothing from J Legend.Dennis is a real legend, but has no estate, his wealth was singing unforgetable songs and God willing his SBT Foundation. Many other people got rich on his genius, but Dennis was blessed with a voice from God.

    MrsDennis(Linda)Yost

  • @lvyost what happened to him?

  • @VercingetorixXIII Dennis sustained a head injury in 2006 and passed away on Dec 7,2008

  • @lvyost Sorry for your loss, anyone who looks can tell how much you loved him... not many of us can find thaat in our lives, glad you did and sorry it was cut short... but at least you had it

  • It's nice but better with Dennis Yost taking the full lead vocal.

  • No joke the 1st time i heard Stormy, I thought it was Save Room! Love em both

  • Thank You VidBrats! Awesome Mix!

  • @JONJUAN105 You're welcome ^^

  • This song really is like a hurricane. Ike came through Missouri @3AM I was asleep but my 88 year old aunt said the wind was blowing from the south and north @ the same time the trees were spinning around. Both of these did an awesome job.

Dennis was one of my all time favorite 60's performers along with the late Skeeter Davis.

  • This is totally cool....two great songs . Stormy is one of the great classics - Dennis Yost will be missed!

  • wow,that was great!

  • They both blessed us with their talent. We're better for it.

  • Definately a copy. talked to Dennis's wife, John is a great artist, the question is did he make an arrangement with him/her to use it. But a great arrangement together and bless Dennis and his family for an amazing artist.

  • Check out the Wikipedia link in my notes. Incidentally, Buddy Buie shares writing credit on both "Stormy" and "Save Room." That explain anything? Dennis's wife, Linda, posted a comment on here about 4 months ago.

  • @twesthu No arrangements were ever made with Dennis Yost or his registered trademark "The Classics IV.

    Mrs.Dennis(Linda)Yost

  • Wow, talk about a way to make yourself an instant success. Just take the already hit material released four decades earlier and change up the lyrics. I don't mind that Legend did it, but it is virtually identicle to the original melody. I couldn't understand why I liked his song so much until I saw this video...now, of course, it's obvious. It may be that he hadn't heard it before it was brought into the studio but it is clear that he copied it to the note for his release.

  • Nearly note for note... I guess there's no such thing as an original thought in this world.

  • @VidBrats Yes, this opens up a whole new world of possibilities for me :-)

  • @JanBee1122 Actually, this isn't exactly a bad thing. After John sampled this song, it led to a lot of discussion which brought attention to the Classic IV & their original version of the song. What John Legend did was to help Dennis & The Classic IV to be introduced to a new & much younger generation that might not have been willing to give them a listen of their own accord. Though it often sticks in my craw when done wrong, many times, sampling has been a benefit to artists of my generation.

  • @DatSoulBoss I couldn't agree with you more ^_-

  • @DatSoulBoss No, I realize that but I understood that he claimed he had not heard the song by the Classic lV before he wrote this version. That simply can't be true based on the compare. If the artist gives full credit to the original in his sampling, I have no problem with it at all, especially for the reasons you stated above. We have lost a lot of really good groups and music styles over the years due to record labels forcing a particular style of music on the artists.

  • @DatSoulBoss Just goes to show you...great "Classic" music will always stand the test of time and be great "Classic" music!

    Mrs. Dennis(Linda)Yost

  • @DatSoulBoss All sampling does is allow people of limited talent to rob the work of others who had the vision and the ability to wrote great music. Ledgend is a thief!!!!

  • nice thank you so much for the share

  • Beautiful !!!

  • Wow this is fabulous, thanks for posting!

  • im glad they worked it out i once wrote Green River i hadnt even titled it and realized what I had done so this is legal today? how different does it have to be it seems these songs are even in the same key.

  • You did a great job on this. I love The Classics IV. And this a great mix and tribute.

  • Thanks for doing this and doing such a nice job. This was the vid I wanted to do!! First time I heard Legend I knew where the main melody came from and I planned to do a split screen. But your mix is excellent. You tell the story, bro.

  • This is a very nice mix in rememberance of the classics four. Thank you

  • I agree that the Supremes version rivals Classic IV's original. Both are excellent renditions of the song!

  • John Legend flat out stole this music, beat, rewote some different lyrics. This is not complicted, John Legend is not an artist in regards to this specific song, he is a Karaoke specialist plain and simple. Save Room for me is just a rip-off.

  • Thank you for honoring my husband with this video. Dennis was all about keeping the music alive, that's why The Classics IV will go on and on.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Dennis (Linda)Yost

  • Thanks for your comments... I was extremely flattered. Dennis was a one-of-a-kind. He made great music that will continue to live on.

  • @lvyost Mrs. Yost. I was a professional musician for 40 years. I loved Dennis' voice. No one could ever sing those songs like he did. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a concert in the late 80's in Florida. It was a thrill to meet one of my musical heros. May God Bless You and Dennis' memory.

  • @bradentonguy50 Thank you for the kind words about Dennis. He used to live in Bradenton and he has a married daughter that still lvs there. If you would like to know more about Dennis and his wishes, please go to theclassicsiv official website click on the Dennis Yost page and there is a link for Dennis Yost Severe Brain Trauma Foundation"Awakening".

    May God Bless you, too.

    Mrs. Dennis(Linda)Yost

  • This is awesome! I've been telling people since this song came out that it was a complete rip off of Stormy. What a great tribute to Dennis Yost. Well done. :)

  • philipleanza3, who would you believe, me or your lying ears? There is still debate as to which version Legend had sampled -- either the original Classics IV version of "Stormy" or Gabor Szabo's 1969 rendition. But if you would do a modicum of research, you will note a writing credit on "Save Room" attributed to Buddy Buie, the longtime songwriter and producer for the Classics IV. He wrote "Stormy".

  • Excellent song writers do not have to "sample" other artists music to help write their own. This well-known practice in the music industry today is one of the reasons most of today's music is very forgettable. "Stormy" by Dennis Yost is still remembered 40 years later. I highly doubt "Save Room" by John Legend will be remembered even a couple years from now.

  • I will definitely give you credit for a fantastic piece of editing.......But with that said, my question is what kind of weed are you smoking? There is no way John Legend "stole" this from Dennis Yost. There are 40 years difference between the songs and I don't hear the similarities at all. You are reading into something that isn't there.

  • I never said or even implied that he "stole" from anyone. If you would read the full text in the upper right, you will clearly see that I wrote he had "sampled" from "Stormy" -- a common and acceptable industry practice so long as writing credit is also acknowledged.

  • And the sample that John & Kanye use is actually from jazz musician Gábor Szabó's version of "Stormy", not the Classics IV version.

  • That's the first I've heard that. My research did not indicate that whatsoever. Have you read my notes in the upper right regarding the sample and John's apparent affinity for the Hammond that was used in the Classic's IV version?

  • John Legend wrote "Save Room" supposedly without ever hearing "Stormy"....Then when some1 told him it sounded like "Stormy", he finally listened 2 the oldie & agreed, then decided 2 use a sample of "Stormy" in the final cut of his song.

  • If John Legend were a child and not a musician, I would tend to believe the had never heard "Stormy". Even if he were... how can someone say that? Are you a friend of John's? Duh!

  • Personally, I don't believe he never ever heard "Stormy", which is Y I put "supposedly" lol...Stormy's just 1 of those songs that UR gonna hear at some point in UR life--On radio, in an elevator, subconsciously in a dentist's office, somewhere--It's just that well-known. But of course, the correct answer is 4 him 2 say that "I never heard it B4", otherwise he'd B accused of copying/biting, which he definitely doesn't want. At best he might not REMEMBER hearing it, but I'm quite sure he heard it.

  • he obviously heard Stormy. the correct answer is NOT for him to say her never heard it before because... look at the difference in artist's.

vanilla ice claims he never heard under pressure by david bowie and he gets sued. kanye west takes through the fire by chaka khan but in his video kisses a poster of her.

giving credit is the real correct answer

  • Not disputing that giving credit is the real correct answer-Was being sarcastic. The original writers of "Stormy" DO get credit on Legend's song, which is the main thing. What I'm saying is Legend had already been quoted saying he never heard it B4--He couldn't turn around & change his story, he has 2 stick with it. And who knows whether he meant he never heard Classics IV's version or Gabor Szabo's version(which is the sample that Kanye gave him). Anyways, errybody got paid so errybody happy.

  • Try "Stormy" by The Meters. My favorite version by far of this song.

  • Great job on this Vidbrats!

  • I knew it! First time I heard Save Room I thought it was a modern remake of Stormy. But Legend has never acknowledged Classics IV for this song.

Wasn't George Harrison sued by the Chiffon's for his "My Sweet Lord" sounding so close to their "He's So Fine"? Wondering why no lawsuit against Legend yet?

  • WOW you are right its the same song? And the song spooky by ARS has the exact sane chords as this song too.

  • You are dead on with your editing. This is an excellent comparison.

  • who pinned 'Stormy' did they get the credit for 'Save Room', at least Santana didnt try to steal a melody ,at least weird al keeps it up front .and i really liked J L till i heard the song , thats why I'm over here rt now. Led Zeplin did the same thing with Lemon song which is the song Killing Floor .and they took the credit for writing the dang thing .someone got ripped off . tito pouinte said he didnt know who carlos santana was , but he sure liked him when he went to the mail box.

  • John Legend claims he never heard the song... it's exactly the same!

  • He's never heard Stormy? Hmmmm. As a multiple Grammy-awarded musician, he's either lying or severely lacking in musical exposure. Personally, I thinking he's lying.

  • @boyblue1171 Dennis Yost never received anything from "Save Room" and I can live with that, but I know Dennis died feeling hurt that he was never even nominated for a Grammy or Rock and Roll hall of Fame.I just wish Dennis' Yost and Classics IV"Stormy" ,along w/Traces, Spooky, Every Day w/You Girl and entire body of their work...would have received the recognition they deserved.

    Mrs Dennis(Linda)Yost

  • @lvyost- Perhaps John Legend can help us see that Mr. Yost and his great band receive this well deserved induction.

  • @Raughwe That would be nice, but I don't know how that would happen.

  • @lvyost In addition to that, I hope it's not a stretch to cite how the C IV's hits influenced how the sax was used on records. Offhand, I could cite Al Stewart's hits, Chris Rea's "Fool, If You Think It's Over" and Glenn Frey's "The One You Love." Buie/Cobb' and the Classics' songs had the same cool as say, "The Look of Love" and "Call Me," for instance, but I'm not sure what pop records came before theirs that featured sax nearly the same way.

  • @fgldnglbs Well, Dennis and The Classics IV were credited with creating the "Soft Rock" sound and/or Southern Rock sound. Dennis was always happy that his music stood the test time.

  • this is sick, and not necessarily for all the best reasons

  • oriolebird, care to elaborate? I'd be most interested in why you view this in a negative context.

  • I wish I could bring that summer day back............

  • great edit!

  • john respects the original artist. because he doesnt mimic the lead of classics iv. that song is permenantly sealed.

  • Nice work. Now do "If You Could Read My Mind" by Gordon Lightfoot and "Greatest Love of All" by Witless Houston.

  • Awesome Mix!!!

  • Man, That was a beautifull mix of both songs together. Nice tribute with Lots of talent!. Great job!

  • Masterpiece

  • great videomix .very much "Bravo!!"

  • brilliant!

    john legend has great taste.

    great editing.

  • Truly one of the best music videos I've seen here on youtube. It's deserving of the 5 star rating, and the 2 songs chosen, are very relevant.

  • I knew it. I thought the same thing. And a second before the chorus hit, my musical intuition went straight to "Stormy". Now I don't know if I should just download Stormy instead!

  • this is aswone!!!! i love this mash up!! please can u send me this song? ;)

  • cool i forgot john legend did this

  • Video clips are from the Classics IV's 1968 appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on NBC

psst..... ed sullivan was on cbs.

  • thanks for the heads up

  • i love it. Thanks for combining these two great songs.

I remember when Save Room was first released. I thought, hey, that sounds like Stormy. Great talent from both men.

    RIP Dennis.

  • Love this mix....love Dennis 1st though.

  • This is great. Taking into account how I was totally out of the loop about the greater public knowledge of these 2 songs' similarity, I always simply noticed it on my own. And yes, I'm over 40 years old! Anyway, I even found myself humming to Stormy when Mr. Legend just performed in Indio, CA on Friday nite. Only came to this mash-up 2 days later! Great work!! (Question: no one ever sued in this case?--or was it legally handled before 'Save Room's' Release?

  • Outstanding effort VidBrats. I always liked the Classics IV and they are featured in my MP3 player as is John Legend. I always thought that Stormy and Save Room sounded alike. Now I know why. Nice job.

  • Wow....creative VidBrats. I see some viewers are upset at the fact that John Legend's "Save Room" is almost exactly like The Classic IV's "Stormy", and I understand the anger to a certain degree. However I feel that John Legend in all likelihood appreciates the original as much, if not more than allot of us, I know I certainly do appreciate it, it's some of the early musical sounds of my childhood, and it's definitely one of the best pop songs from the 60's, and arguably of alltime, R.I.P. D.Y.

  • Hey Vidbrats you misunderstood, I'll try to explain in simpler ways. I said Dennis copied no one meaning he did stuff fresh in other words he didn't need to copy anyone else. Do I make myself clear now?

  • Please click "more info" in the upper righthand of this page, which fully explains how John Legend wrote "Save Room" by sampling "Stormy" by The Classics IV.

  • I would like a copy of this too. That was cool how you did it. I like John Legend, but I have a hard time believing that he got the "Save Room" melody on his own. It was definitely taken from "Stormy".

  • John Legend is a Dennis Yost wannabe. Give us a break ,Dennis copied no one.

  • No one has ever suggested that Dennis Yost and The Classics IV "copied" John Legend's "Save Room." In fact, "Stormy" was written decades before "Save Room." For a detailed explanation of how it came about please read the "more info" in the upper righthand corner.

  • When I first heard "Save Room" I was driving around with my 20 year old son and I say, "Hey, that sounds like 'Stormy' from the late 60's"...he looked at me like I had two heads. Come to find out Legend credits Yost on the song (as he should...many chords are the same). Great job putting this together...join the Classics IV facebook group!

  • I haven't a clue what John Legend sings as I only listen to 60's & 70's stuff. But this is neat how you put the 2 songs together. It does sound a little like Stormy. Rip Dennis Yost...

  • This was one of my favorite songs growing up! ...Thank You!

  • Thank You for your music Dennis Yost. You live on in our hearts. R.I.P.

  • that was cool I had no idea, I love learning these kind of things about newer songs. Thank you for sharing!
