  • Wait, Why would these guys give it to them immediately?

  • He failed the last one on purpose. Nice acting, Derren.

  • The second one was practically the same thing, pacing/leading "It is down there", "That's the tower over there", "You'll be happy to give that to me", then, since the guy wasn't quite there yet, Derren gave him a handshake interrupt, one more pace during the interrupt, hands him the bottle and leads for the stuff. He paces some more and walks away.

  • This was done with a nested loop (to start), non-verbal pacing (the entire time), then from here on out it was PACE PACE PACE LEAD. The first lead is the suggestion "you'll be happy to give that to me". Then PACE PACE PACE LEAD, the second lead "Can I [just give that] just grab your wallet off you?" contained an embedded command in the bracket. That second lead combined a technique (Reciprocation, from Cialdini's Influence Page 18). Then he paces twice more to keep his guard down and walks away

  • iam sorry, but i don t get it, are those people really that stupid, i wouldnt give any thing if somewone asks the way

  • It actually works. You have to pick someone you don't know though. Be friendly, and copy their movements (like how he did in the video with the pointing) and be in sync. Then ask them to hold the water bottle (to preoccupy them) and ask nicely for whatever it is you want. Just keep being friendly and confident, honest looking. However, you do have to have a little experience in it. It probably won't work the first couple times. I know this from experience (though I always gave it back). (^ ^)

  • This show was made for entertainment. Those people are actors. I hope no one here acutally thinks random people would do that.

  • @entehrend It's not actors. You'd be suprised how hard it would be to make a televisionshow and manage to fake it without no one in the staff outing it. Plus, I've met several mentalists who can do it. Just because it's entertaining, and you've never experienced it, it doesn't mean it's fake. Widen your horizon mate.

  • Oooh Yes! this one is a classic one of my all time faves!!! I love doing a variation on this trick with food granted i do pay for it eventually but its fun to see how long it takes for them to snap out of it if you don't help :P

  • For the last one I bet if he asked for money instead of the wallet then he would have won the scam. Sometimes the term "wallet" can set of an alarm because of the issues it represents to poeple. And if it doesn't set off an "alarm" for you then you probably have never experienced losing it ;-)

  • lol the vegas of britain. I suppose he compares blackpool tower to vegas' eiffel?

  • so fucking fake

  • @Volthan Keep drinking the fluoride.

  • When he is scamming the second guy for the first time there's just some guy in the background staring at them like " wait what? "

  • have any of you tried it?

  • what an idiot lmao

  • "Can I just grab the other stack of you so I can keep it, cheers" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Can't he give some subliminal suggestions to these other people in Blackpool that they should lose some f*cking weight?

  • amazing

  • Look at the guy in the backround at 2:20. He's like WTF?

  • Just confuse the hell out of people and they will do whatever you say.

  • Anyone notice the dis/re appearing person at the last bit of the video?

  • Why did he give him his wallet?

  • @JoshuaXiong100 mind u they developed the technique......

  • I think also he asked too quickly he didnt implant the "you're happy to give that to me" command before asking

  • works? like charm?

  • WTF? this really work o.O?

  • XD

    2:18

the guy walking by overhearing the conversation was like "wtf!?"

  • Was he hipnotising them or something?

  • omg sweet it?? works!?

  • pickpockets sure are getting lazier these days lol

  • Derren Brown should try that in a Bank.

"Would you mind handing me over all of the cash you have?"

  • Did you see the guy in the background when Derren was taking his stuff the first time? He was looking like "what the hell?"

  • why are they just giving him stuff this is stupid ...how could it not click in your head?

  • I love how he gets the second guy a second time. "Can I just grab the others off you so I can... keep them?" So good. Also note, that he could probably make a better get away by simply allowing them to keep the anchor, the water bottle, as he walks off. The reactions are all great though. Take about six steps and get this look like "I'm pretty sure that dude just robbed me". The best part though? The fat dude that watches the second guy get robbed and doesn't say anything.

  • in the second one the little girl looks at the camera and smile and waved at the camera, so u can see this has been a set-up cause if the little girl notice the camera he would to notice it.

  • @dionysos1234567

and he would show you that it was a set up? it is a tv show. neatly edited.

  • does derran keep the wallet? i mean i think he should give it bac

  • @Accfnerd He gives them back of course. They wouldn't talk in front of the camera if he didn't explain them what was happening.

  • rofl i love how that fat guy was looking at him rob the 2nd guy

  • i love the way he's grumbling at the end

  • Comment removed

  • I love how the 1st guy says "You're a holidaymaker," at 0:37. Who goes on holiday in a suit?

  • @mmabbr

    barney stinson ;)

  • Haha, that guy fell for it twice

  • it fucking works you dont even have to use all the steps either i used to do it all the time in highschool without noticing what i was doing just people used to listen to me and do whatever i wanted got me laid more than enough and made a few bucks

  • Ha ha, are these real? Maybe I should try: Could you write me a check for $5,000?

  • I don't get it

  • wow

  • The mind is truly amazing. There was game in my math class one time and my math teacher offered me something. I said i didnt want and he waved it in front of my face saying "you don't have to take it" and I started to reach for it. Before I grabbed it I came to my senses, but it was just like so natural, it was weird.

  • derren brown is the one man with the most balls in the world i mean to literally walk up to someone in the middle of the day with hundreds of witnesses and steal their stuff.... that takes balls.

  • @068ant This is one more reason to avoid strangers. I'm glad I saw this video. Now I will just shut my ears and run when a stranger tries to ask for my help. Most people are worthless anyway. So what they have to say doesn't matter.

  • It was so funny at 2:19 (sorry i didnt know how to copy the embed html and post it) when the guy watches this happening and is confused

  • LMAO when he took the stuff from the guy the second time I cracked up laughing

  • @1danyol1 haha yea. i'm guessing that according to what derren says, he makes the guy think he was helping derren by "holding his stuff" for him. so the guy gets confused and thinks that those items are actually derren's. funny stuff

  • @YuneShik he actually anchored the *state of confusion* to the water bottle. so when he gave the guy the water bottle, he was back in that trance-like state, open to suggestion.

  • @Wh1teNinja69 Likewise as I've mentioned he utilized conversational hypnosis.

  • Man, it seems so simple yet I know it would take a lot of practice and training to get it right.

  • He gets them to be suggestible with the constant barrage of suggestions and then says - "You don't mind me asking that do you? no, You're happy to give them to me" suggesting that they don't mind him asking for their property and they are happy to give them over to him.

  • I don't think this really works ... I'd never give my wallet to someone passing by!

  • Lady walks by and says, "I read your books" at 2:17 (I think)

  • @billthoms Na, listen to it a few times

  • dont try yhis at home kids!

  • There is also a big detail that everyone forget on Derren Brown's vidéos. It's his clothes.

He always performs wearing a suit and perform on people that are never in suit. It raises his social level. You won't see him

    wearing a t-shirt and a denim.

Of course his embeded commands, his elocution, his voice, the confusion he creates etc... are very important but his suit is as important.

  • @Erkoil That is true!

  • This face-to-face theft method is a great way to get your face knocked off! You won't be able to do too many of those.....

  • at 2:23 , he gives the guy who's watching some signal (to leave?), just as the car is passing, and the man is on his way when the cars gone. i wonder if he was 'controlled' as well...

  • win

  • What does he say at the very end? I can't hear it properly at 4:03

  • i gotta try this on my mates

  • wow, I wish he would explain it... but it is probably something less clever than we think. Verbal distraction and not focusing on your hands and movements. Of course darren makes it look easy.

  • lmao at the guy in the blue shirt at 2:18 :)

  • Hypnosis only works on a minority few. Most cannot be hypnotised.I found i was not able to.

  • @mastersduhgree You've never studied NLP, have you?

  • @Ripley747 Probably not.I suppose that there are certain phsycological issues that im unaware of too.

  • No way...people are not this stupid.THis is just for entertainment. No one is this big of a sucker.

  • As I'm watching this, I'm thinking, "No freakin' way! That'd never work on me." I couldn't believe he was getting away with that. It's amazing. But psychology is funny. You never think anything would work on you. People are fooling themselves if they think they are immune to brainwashing.

  • @Ripley747 Well now...i honestly think you,re or my reaction would be more like a reflex of; What?..my wallet? ...no way dude.

  • Unreal, no way, how the mind gets fooled

  • WTF? xD

  • "Let me grab that watch. Oh, and your phone and your house keys too!" I FELL OUT OF MY FREAKING CHAIR LAUGHING!!!

  • hahahahahahahahahaha

  • keep walking fatty

  • Retardation.

  • Wtf why would he just do that.

  • ehy would someone give their valet to a stranger?=\

  • @Peregar4ik how many times have you left a card with an employee because you were busy picking up your McDonalds to go? He distracts them, exchanges the water (social convention) and confuses them both with the question and then socially with the "you don't mind me asking" which completely throws off their thought pattern. It's no wonder they're disoriented.

  • if this is their version of Las Vegas, then it means everyone is drunk and/or retarded. therefore it cant be that hard to do.

if this guy was smart he would scam the shit out of casinos

  • @USA3333 haha he does m8!

  • lol nice try derren brown (on last attempt) wounder how long till I can do it in the street :D

  • haha this is how the Brits rob Africa and Asia.

  • lol

  • aye were sikk

  • hahaha

    brittains contains no brains

  • I don't actually know, why he calls it 'Russian scam', 'cause in my opinion one would get spanked if try it in Russia, believe me, I live in this country :))))).........nevertheless it's quite a good video, although, I don't think it works all the time: there are just different types of people....And of course don't try to repeat ))))))))

  • it works.. maybe 1% of the time? he just has to do it 200 times, and then show both times before showing one failure? he aims not to trick those people, but his audience. remember that. this way, he can still safely say that it wasn't staged.

  • @thatotherthinker

I`m from Blackpool, believe me I know. The average IQ of the average holidaymaker in Blackpool is bound to increase his success rate.

  • Sorry to say, but far more than 1% of the time...It's hard to believe but people will do what you tell them far far more than you would think...as long as you tell them the right way.

  • for more info theres always wikipedia which will tell you it all including he's gay and came out the clost in 2007 so dont judge your book by the cover

  • Brown writes,

I am often dishonest in my techniques, but always honest about my dishonesty. As I say in each show, 'I mix magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship'. I happily admit cheating, as it's all part of the game. I hope some of the fun for the viewer comes from not knowing what's real and what isn't. I am an entertainer first and foremost, and I am careful not to cross any moral lines

  • It uses genuine psychology principles ... so I am 99,99% sure that this is not a scam.

Don't try this on the street though.

  • II thnk these victims feel this guy is a tStreet Performer or Magician and they've been selected for a demonstration.

The environment has a lot to do with feeling safe

  • Hahaha ... the second last guy was really funny and a fat guy was standing there watchin derren rip of that guys watch lol

  • for the last one, i dont think he established rapport that well as the previous two... but nicely done :)

  • i dont think they understood english very well. thats the key to his whole bit.

  • exactly. he didn't use the line "You don't mind me asking, do you? You're happy to give that to me."

He said that to each of the others before asking for their stuff.

  • this is not a scam, its a comedy about human nature

  • That would DEFINITELY NOT work in Russia or Ukraine. So why call it Russian scam ( complete)?

  • I think it doesn't work the last time because he fails to imply the suggestion and the pattern interrupt with them.

  • I think it's because in the last one the lady was with 2 friends. People act differently when they are alone.

Did you notice her first reaction when asked if she had a wallet was to look straight at her friend?

I think when you're with friends you're paying much more attention than when you're walking the street alone in your own kind of trance.

    I don't know, just a thought.

  • no i fnk ur completly rite, cause wen i walk wif my m8s im wide awake but wen i walk by myself, i kinda go in a trance, do u noe wat i mean?

  • Yeah absolutely, it's weird.

  • @rhinapina I can't believe I instantly knew m8s was mom. Almost entirely from context.

  • i guess so, but it also looks like the ppl are also kinda stupid or inebriated. I wouldn't ever do it. in fact I feel far more aware of whats happening when im on my own

  • @frankovich213 Well, it might only be a subtle difference, but I noticed that for the two that this worked on, he asked the question, "You don't mind me asking, do you?", followed by, " You;re happy to give that to me". These are both suggestions that he skipped with the last woman. He just tried to jump right into the bottle swap and asking for the wallet.

  • @frankovich213 That's what religious cults also target the most. The moonies for example are more willing to strike up a conversation with a single person than with a couple on the street.

  • @frankovich213

Also unlike the first two he never gave the subliminal command "your happy to give that to me".

  • @frankovich213 it could be that her friend was the leader/ held more power in their little group, so she was less receptive to an outside person taking control since she had someone who already had the control

  • @skifflebunch Yes, that's definitely a possibilty. I didn't think of that.

  • @frankovich213

that is true. russian scam is based on confusion and subconcious order.

when you are confused you are looking for answer in your environment. if you are alone, the only thing you can think about is darrens subconcious order "can i grab your wallet" but, whenever you r with frineds, u can look for information with them and the order is weaker.

sorry for my terrible english. i hope you understood

  • @ommerl Your English is very good actually. Thanks for the explanation.

  • @ommerl - very well said!

  • @ommerl Where have you learned this, do you know more about this stuff?

  • @HealthXpoint

i am NLP practitioner myselfe. learning for master practitioner degree.

    darren use NLP alot.

but he is exeptionaly good and he is inventing and adds magics and hipnosis to his shows. only sometimes i can understand what he does. i am not skilled as he is.

  • @HealthXpoint

NLP: sleight of mouth, sub concios order, raport: pacing and leading.

    mybe also used vague speech.

u can learn NLP and mybe u understand how he used the techniques above.

  • dude you speak better english than most americans don't be so hard on yourself

  • @ommerl your english is great man, whats your native language?

  • @AudioMayhem100

tnx. my native language is Hebrew

  • @ommerl thanks for the explanation. i thought women are smarter:))

  • Thats awesome, i watched it twice then got it, when he asks him in the context of directions "you dont mind giving that to me" thats when he taps into his mind, that was the NLP or whatever it is.

  • This has to be a set up, surely people aren't this stupid

  • its not stupidity, its the ability to slip past the conscience mind, it happens all the time, even when we dont realize.

Does anyone know what the pattern break is in this? I think its when he interrupts him after asking for the time?

  • Gonna take a guess on the first one as him noticing the tan line on the guy's arm where a watch should be, and then asking for the time, which the guy reflexively looks for, but can't find.

The interupt for the second is the strange handshake that he does and grabs the guy's wrist with his other hand. Then when he hands the guy the water, it probably sets up an expectation in the guy's mind to give something back to Derren.

The extra person spoiled the last one. She looked to him, he said "NO"

  • its giving him the bottle i htink

  • has nothing to do with intellect... their conscious minds are distracted and in that moment of confusion the conscious mind tries to grab hold of something that makes sense and a door is open and the unconscious mind will accept any commands it is given "you don't mind giving it to me" people who accept these commands are actually very smart people... and are good at taking directions...

  • actually it's real. ive done it on many people and about 80% of the time it does work. building rapport is the key.

  • I don't believe that a thing like this could happen. It's illogical! If somebody asks me for my wallet I wouldn't give it to him! which mechanisms could ever occur in a situation like this?

If u can do it too, describe me the main steps because I can't see where's the trick here.

  • well, you build rapport with them, keep them distracted with the directions, hand them something small and ask for something of theirs, and surprisingly they give it to you!

  • lol love that "nah you were heading that way werent you"?

  • wierd

  • npl the perfect crime

  • 1:20 I think Derren got scared lol

  • Comment removed

  • WTF

  • happy to give that to me

  • How does this work ? Is it real ?

    seems cool

  • Yes, it is real. Terrifying when you think about it.

  • It is. It's called NLP.

  • Russian Pride!!!

  • "These aren't the droids you're looking for" *handwave*

"You're happy to give that to me?"

I see no difference. Derren Brown is a Jedi.

A joking aside, that is some pretty clever stuff.

  • in the beginning of the convo when he's about to shake hands he keeps saying "you don't mind me asking, you are happy to give me that to me"

so basically he implies the weird thing he is about to do up front.

  • Comment removed

  • no way! i've done it to my friends, and it usually works.

  • Comment removed

  • no, they just give it to you, and they keep talking.

  • Comment removed

  • like in the video. you get them talking and then ask for their wallet and their phone and as they talk they give it to you.

  • Comment removed

  • they look more confused and ask for it back, but in a weird way

  • How so?

  • Because he is so smart and knows everything.

  • look at the guy's expression in the white shirt walking by at 2:18 lol
