'And Eve was weak' is one of the most powerful songs from a musical I know. It is amazing and I pray that it has made the cut for the new Off Broadway production next year.
wow. good stuff. Carrie sounds like it had some great moments. not on iTunes! too bad. Michael Gore should record this. somehow. even w/o staging it. just get it recorded.
A small portion of the music is outstanding ("I Remember How Those Boys Could Dance", for example) but the show itself sucked. The plot is horrible, the lyrics are mostly crappy, and the choreography was atrocious.
Betty and Linzi were the only two good aspects of the show.
Do you by any chance have any recordings of the show? Something you can email to people? Most I was hoping to find a digital recording of And Eve was Weak.
Carrie was the first musical I saw. I saw it in London first with Barbara Cook, then on Broadway with Ms. Buckley, I was lucky enough to be at Betty's Carnegie Hall show were she reunited with Linzi to sing some selections from Carrie. A few years ago I saw Betty at the Plush Room and took my Playbill from Carrie for her to sign and we had a good laugh together.
yeah, it was a good time. I have not been able to see many bad musicals since then....there is a great book called "Not Since Carrie" about all the musical flops...it is a hoot!
Can someone please tell me where I can get the song And Eve Was Weak? Please respond!!!!! I want to put it on my iPod soooooo bad, but I can't find it anywhere!! Assistance please!!!
Carrie was horrid. Seriously. The show opened on May 14, 1988 and closed on May 17, 1988 I believe. Ran for 5 performances. The show was a mixture of songs that sounded like this (almost pop-opera like) and horrid ensemble '80s pop music. They decided to cast the wonderful 17 year old Linzi Hateley as Carrie, but the rest of the H.S. kids were like practically 25-30. It was pretty bad, with about 5 good songs.
They put a "Greek Mythology" type spin on it...uggh. It opened on May 12, 1988 and closed May 15, 1988, having done 5 performances. There are sites where you can download the music. Otherwise, its practically impossible to find.
Haha, yeah. But Evil Dead is doing fairly well because they're doing it as a silly show, not like Carrie when they tried to be serious and legitimately scary.
I agree...who wants to see a scary musical? I can take ones with a dark side like Phantom or Jeckle and Hyde, but I'll go to the movies for my horror fix.
when are people going to understand the musical isn't focusing on the scary stuff? it's more of a high school drama... not really stephen king, but i like the music...
I would LOVE to get the audio to this show. I have been waiting for years for this to be revived, done for PBS, or released as a cast album but,NO. I saw the last performance on Broadway and can't understand why people had such a negative reaction to it. If it were redone with better effects, sets and casting it could be fantastic. If there is a place in New York for boys singing naked and a man blowing bubbles then there must be an audience for this forgotten classic. PLEASE send me the audio.
Yeh- I agree-! I saw this production and some of the score was really amazing- But... it really was a dreadful production- the audience was even terrible- booing horribly, one man next to me screamed "we're paying to watch women kill each other?!!!!" he was furious- It was a little scary watching the audience's reaction. "Out For Blood' was awful- and the opening number was very bizzare. However- all that aside- it was a heck of a lot more creative than 'Cry-Baby'....!
If it were to be revived-and heavily revised- I could see it with Celia Kenan Bolger and Christine Ebersole. But they would probably never do this show, even if it was changed a lot
This show was so bad it was funny. I think that it would work much better now... Even on Broadway... There is better technology now. I just think that it sad that all but 9 people from that show could not get another job because of this musical.
It really is puzzling why it was so trashed back then! One of my prized possessions is the "Carrie" poster. When Betty Buckley was doing "Sunset Boulevard" (which she was GREAT too!) I got a thick blood red sharpie pen and waited at the stage door. She came along with her doggies and signed it, "Love Betty Buckley" right under Carrie's tears; after she realized how it looked like blood she said "great idea on the pen sweetie". I sure wish I could see or hear the whole show!
No, unfortunately I did not see it, but I was able to get a Playbill and then jumped at buying the lobby card poster when I saw it. I'd love to see or hear the whole show. I know there are bits and pieces on the web. Thanks!
It's actually easy to understand why it flopped. Despite Buckley's brilliance the show's direction was HORRIBLE. There were huge changes in tone/costume/feel from scene to scene. You never actually knew anything about the town or about the characters. It relied on knowledge of the movie instead of telling a story. Bad show, great performances/
Actually, the director wanted to focus on the characters and feelings evoked rather than the scenery...I think the staging was misunderstood. The mother/daughter scenes are so truly mesmerizing, and the dancing was very complicated choreography. I would like to see it brought back with some changes, but I still like the idea of MINIMALISM in the scenery and focus on the music, characters and story.
I like the idea of minimalism, but this is a story about a small, ordinary town. The idea is that seemingly innocent towns can produce monsters like the girls who terrorize Carrie a twisted woman like her mom. However by staging it in the freaky way they did they took away th epower of the work and we were left with a series of random scenes with no connectivity. It's a play, not a staging experiment.
OMG if anyone has a video of the Eve Was Weak scene please put it up on here. It had such amazing velocity, tension and chemistry between the two actresses as Buckley stalks her song around the stage and forcer her under the stage. The climax has the audience in rapture. OMG Buckley, I worship you.
What is this about a tape? I'm writing a research paper and Carrie is a large chunk of it. I would desperately love to get my hands on a recording of this show!
I had the pleasure (understatement) to see this on Bway years ago. My friend Rose Marie Jackson was in it in London and in New York. She told me great stories about sharing an apartment with Anthony Ray in London (funny and sad). Barbara Cook saw the writing on the wall and got out of the contract so as NOT to go to Bway with it.
I trained with Linzi Hately (yrs ago, of course) and remember when she got the part etc. Am also lucky enough to have 2 tapes, a recording of the first night on Broadway. OK, it's a flawed show, in some respects, but the tapes represent a thrilling night's entertainment, for sure. Buckley, especially, is great. If I'm not wrong, Barbara Cook took over the role after Buckley. I remember Linzi saying she was a "slow learner"- er,lol ;o)
There are about five good songs in the whole score. This was a flop because most of it is awful. The stuff that's good is amazing, but that's a very small percentage of the show, and the rest is absolutely terrible.
(Though, if you've heard Barbara Cook sing "Open Your Heart" you can tell that it was written just for her.)
Betty Buckley was so much better - WORTHY of a Tony !!! Did you know that Linzi Hateley won a DRAMA DESK Award for this role? She beat a lot of famous actors...

Now I have done more research and listened to all the songs in the musicals on some websites.
I like all the songs, but I do agree with you in the combination of styles and music and story-line; were not well done.
But for that week; it was the HOTTEST ticket on broadway for the reason the critics hated it so much.
