The thing with it - is that it can be sung 'Pop' - a la Jim , 'Blues'- Naz , & 'Ballad' - The Big O. Yes, Jims' arrangement is a tad too 'clean' for me ( but funky organ at the end...[ Stevie? ]  ) --- but great melody finds ithe way every which way.

I don't think this is supposed to be "ironic", actually - more a mark of the times it was produced in. Also, the lyrics rather work when sung in this more upbeat way - like a happy reflection rather than something melodramatic.

aah come on now. not bad coming from a drummer. has a great voice and in my opinion the best version. heard this first when i was a nipper in the late 70s.if you like singers that sing as if they are swallowing barbed wire then nazareth is your man. capaldi rocks!!

For me this version is just so cool and has such a lovely feel to it and Capaldi's voice sounds so natural on it, unlike the Nazareth and Emmy Lou Harris/Gram Parsons versions which sound so painful.

Jim Capaldi made an incredible version of this back in 1975. However Nazareth had their version out back in 1974, it was a minor hit, but a great performance. I like both versions, though they have differerent overall feelings.

This is a different take on this song, but it has been done by the best, Emmy Lou Harris & Gram Parsons - will leave you in tears...these two are beautiful together, she loved him very much & you still feel the heartbreak in her voice to this day.

I totally agree. Originally done by the Everly Brothers, this cover version dating from November 1975 when it reached Number Three. Nazareth had a much smaller hit in November 1977 which struggled to the Number Fifteen slot.
