to be honest this game sucks in comparision to other Mario games this game is nowhere near as good as Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Galaxy 2,Super Mario 64,Super Mario Bros 3 and many more games.Im not ranting that the games sucks but in my opinon it was a disapointment to ME and it did not live up to it's name fully. A certain friend of mine who is an otaku but is biased for Sony blasted Nintendo for making "another childish game" with New Super Mario Bros and now Super Mario 3D Land. I should say he's foolish for that act and even with explanations, he simply cannot realize that Mario games have often been designed to provide gamers of varying ages a fun platforming experience. Too bad some people just cannot look beyond the "cutesy" art of a game to realize its true purpose and appeal.
Well if Nintendo made Mario in the spirit by which they made the first Super Mario Bros trilogy and arguably Yoshi's Island and as much as primitive early 3d technology allowed, SM64, then it would have the thematic appeal of 'plumber in wonderland' pop-styled adventure to supplement the unquestionably solid and flourishing gameplay to make the game an easy sell to anyone. What I will say 4 SM3DL's continuation of almost self deprecating modern Mario thematics is that it's very fun to time trial
That seems to be a problem with a sadly noticable portion of gamers. A friend of mine keeps saying how he dislikes Mario games because they are childish, reguardless of how good they may be. He even told me he'd consider playing a Mario game based on GTA standards.... But what gamers need to know is, that you don't need, super-realistic graphics, bloodshed, or boobs to have fun in a game, and Mario is a constant reminder of that.
I enjoyed your point of how other developers just aren't trying. The same problem occurred with the Wii. Nintendo makes fantastic devices and great games, but those games tend to be the ONLY good games for their devices.
I do hope the Kingdom Hearts game coming will make a break from that habit of saving the good stuff for PS3 and 360, and relegating only cheap franchise tie-ins to the Nintendo systems.
@blazera The DS had its third party titles that was amazing though like Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days, Final Fantasy III, Crono Trigger, Dragon Quest IX etc.

@rkofan2323 Well 3rd party games are mostly to enable the "Realness" of the game. That's why they try to make the graphics the best and stand-out. The 3D party games' graphics are mostly to emphasize the realness of the game so the players would feel like they are inside (lol 3DS slogan). But then again, it would depend on WHAT KIND of games ur talking about. Violence? Puzzles? It only depends.

This game was amazing. However, a multi-player mode would have been nice. I would have liked a co-op mode, or a VS. mode like in New Super Mario Bros. DS, or an idea I had where one player runs through the castle while the other player chases them as a shadow clone.
But that didn't stop me from getting the game. It WAS very fun, but it is probably going to be in my closet for the next 2 months now that I have Mario Kart 7 :)
@SuperSupermanX1999 Alot more challenging when you reach the extra 8 worlds and far better in physical feel, atmosphere, design, 3d perspection indication, execution and... well... DAT SOUNDTRACK, MAAAN.

and I love how it teases the player with the whole "World 8... oh wait there's more" thing.
There's even alot of references to the gameplay of Donkey Kong in this, especially the Gameboy version. When Bowser was tossing Barrels at me that I had to dodge, I was like umm, this feels very familiar. And that whole "the original levels are over... now get ready for the real game" thing was totally from DK gameboy edition!
And undertow is somewhat wrong.. this is a reimagining of Super Mario Bros 3... so it is a remake... only it's more of an entirely new game based on the original game, rather than what Starfox 64 and Ocarina of Time were.
Just because there aren't many 3DS titles out there, doesn't mean there won't be in the future.
Take the PS3, for example. It didn't really get enough good games until further down the line. The Wii had all the games and glory then. But compare the two now and you'll find that there really aren't any exciting Wii games coming out, yet there continue to be great PS3 releases. (I own and love both, so I'm not trying to bash).

@thecristovar I couldn't agree more. Also, Mark does a better job reviewing this game. Mark does more of a show rather than tell approach to reviewing games with a camera. Derek, on the other hand, talks too much in my opinion. Additionally, Mark speaks at a comfortably slower, non-nerdy rate, and he adds some small humor here and there. Mark has had way more experience than Derek, and I find Mark's reviews way more entertaining as a result.
I love this game, and since i just barely saw your Mario Week discussions from last year, I must say that my top three Mario games are Super Mario 64 DS , Super Mario 3D Land, and my top one is still the original Super Mario Bros.
All the other mainstream Mario games are amazing as well(yes, EVEN Mario 2), but these three stand out to me the most.

They need to remake Super Mario 64 because the DS version was okay, but a 3D version would be cool. You could do a 2- Player advanture because one person will be playing as Mario the other person will be playing as Luigi and you can see both eachother on your screen just like Mario Kart DS. And putt more levels and worlds in there and that would be a success. Remake the music like StarFox 64 3D. And also let the player be able to ride Yoshi on thier advanture he would be needable for some areas.
Let's be honest, its great BUT- Nintendo played it as safe as possible. SMB3 is one of the best games ever (#1 on the NES) and this game emulates this as much as possible without being a remake, from levels to power ups. They aren't showing that the 3DS as a console of NEW capabilities, only that it can improve/compete with the NES. N64 was a breakthough, Galaxy/Wii showed an evolution, but now Nintendo has set it/us up to expect something revolutionary. One wonders, Can they do it? Wii U?

@swss4rmy Actually, from a business standpoint launching a ton of amazing games at once is a bad call. While they all look amazing, not everyone can afford all of those great games at once, and when things like that happen people tend to forget they exist and never get around to buying them.
Thats actually why Nintendo is currently putting out about 1 console quality game a month, so people can afford it.
But I agree, the Vita's lineup is very impressive.
@CGRundertow the near a billion dollar loss wasn't because of the 3DS, yes it caused some loss but it mostly had to do with the value of the yen vs the euro. They are also working on a ton of different projects including the wii u which is costing them money as well. Sony has a bigger financial loss and they don't have a "3DS", so something is wrong there :P
Other third party companies cannot make good 3DS games because Nintendo limits them. If you look within Nintendo's history any great game on a Nintendo system was made by Nintendo. With exceptions of Cap-com, Konomi and others.

Ok dude financial loss was just for a few months, don't you even recall how many 3DS units were sold in October? Enough to outsell DS units within the same amount of time (first couple of months) so I think it's doing really well right now. The price cut was for the better, the deficit will be taken care of and then some this Christmas. So don't complain about it!

Derek, the 3DS is selling VERY well. So well that it's going to outperform DS first year sales in US. It's actually selling more than what the 360 and PS3 did in their first year.

He was criticising the game choice, not really the sales(which have already picked up since Ocarina was released) and I somewhat agree...
I have about 15 games, so I like a few, but I agree the choice was limited, and that put nintendo in the red a few months after launch. After Ocarina, sales began to pick up and eventually it surpassed the 360 and PS3 in first year. But before that it was sending them into the RED bigtime.
@gundamzerostrike Times have changed since the launch of the DS. Tablets are being used for gaming, Iphones are doing very well in the gaming market, and the psvita is being released soon with a bigger library of games. The DS's success can not predict the 3DS's success. It doesn't work that way.
@MrTobinian No, man, YOU are wrong here. The 3DS has been selling extremely well since its price drop, which happened in August. It got low sales only during 3 months (May, June and July), with about 350 units sold in US, according to NPD data. However, in August, September and October, according to he same NPD, the 3DS sold about 780k in US (starting with 260k in August). Commercial until recently? False information, bro, the 3DS sales has been great since the beginning of the semester.
I know sales now are picking up. But there was a point in the 3DS life when the PSP was outselling it 2 to 1. I just think it's unfair that you where so aggressive to the reviewers, maybe outdated, but valid remark.

I heard part of the lack of 3ds sales, was due to competition such as ipad, and similar devices, which may cause problems for the psvita when it launches.
I havent bought a handheld since the first model GBA. I dont play games outside the house and the small screen has always turned me off. Thankfully Nintendo game us Supergameboy and the GBA adaptor, so i've been able to experience those libraries. I wish they would make an adaptor for the DS games.
Little know fact, the 3ds is now selling better then the DS did (not by much) in the same amount of time after release. It only sold poorly when the price point was higher.
It's funny, you'd think this would be getting more attention but it seems to have gotten lost underneath all the other games .. Saints Row, Skyrim, MW3, Uncharted.. Big couple weeks!
@justingszabo Aside from Modern Warfare, I fully expect this game (and Mario Kart 7) to outsell every game released this year by a huge margin. It'll probably beat MW3 by a small margin too, when it's all said and done. Nintendo games don't have those huge "Gears of War", "Halo" opening weeks but they sell very good for years unlike most other series that do the majority of their sales in the first few months.
@PowderedxToastman That's the case THESE days anyway. It normally takes a year or two for the best games to start coming out on a console. In earlier days, consoles tended to lauch with atleast ONE killer ap. SNES had alot of it's best games released in the same year it launched. The PS1 also had a pretty good launch lineup, as did the Dreamcast and Gamecube. Other consoles like the N64 and Xbox also launched with ATLEAST 1 system-seller.
@PowderedxToastman The 64 launched with Super Mario 64. The Playstation launched with Twisted Metal. The Playstation 3 launched with Resistance: Fall of Man. The Xbox launched with Halo (I do not like Halo, but it was huge). The 360 launched with Call of Duty 2

Totally, @321cheeseman. Nothing Derek said about the 3DS isn't true, and he's bringing it up to point out how important this game is to the system. Derek is just fair about the 3DS, and for some reason, people have a problem with that.

@rkofan2323 Well 3rd party games are mostly to enable the "Realness" of the game. That's why they try to make the graphics the best and stand-out. The 3D party games' graphics are mostly to emphasize the realness of the game so the players would feel like they are inside (lol 3DS slogan). But then again, it would depend on WHAT KIND of games ur talking about. Violence? Puzzles? It only depends.

This game was amazing. However, a multi-player mode would have been nice. I would have liked a co-op mode, or a VS. mode like in New Super Mario Bros. DS, or an idea I had where one player runs through the castle while the other player chases them as a shadow clone.
But that didn't stop me from getting the game. It WAS very fun, but it is probably going to be in my closet for the next 2 months now that I have Mario Kart 7 :)

and I love how it teases the player with the whole "World 8... oh wait there's more" thing.
There's even alot of references to the gameplay of Donkey Kong in this, especially the Gameboy version. When Bowser was tossing Barrels at me that I had to dodge, I was like umm, this feels very familiar. And that whole "the original levels are over... now get ready for the real game" thing was totally from DK gameboy edition!

Just because there aren't many 3DS titles out there, doesn't mean there won't be in the future.
Take the PS3, for example. It didn't really get enough good games until further down the line. The Wii had all the games and glory then. But compare the two now and you'll find that there really aren't any exciting Wii games coming out, yet there continue to be great PS3 releases. (I own and love both, so I'm not trying to bash).
Anyway, I hope to get a 3DS next year. :D

@thecristovar I couldn't agree more. Also, Mark does a better job reviewing this game. Mark does more of a show rather than tell approach to reviewing games with a camera. Derek, on the other hand, talks too much in my opinion. Additionally, Mark speaks at a comfortably slower, non-nerdy rate, and he adds some small humor here and there. Mark has had way more experience than Derek, and I find Mark's reviews way more entertaining as a result.

I love this game, and since i just barely saw your Mario Week discussions from last year, I must say that my top three Mario games are Super Mario 64 DS , Super Mario 3D Land, and my top one is still the original Super Mario Bros.
All the other mainstream Mario games are amazing as well(yes, EVEN Mario 2), but these three stand out to me the most.

They need to remake Super Mario 64 because the DS version was okay, but a 3D version would be cool. You could do a 2- Player advanture because one person will be playing as Mario the other person will be playing as Luigi and you can see both eachother on your screen just like Mario Kart DS. And putt more levels and worlds in there and that would be a success. Remake the music like StarFox 64 3D. And also let the player be able to ride Yoshi on thier advanture he would be needable for some areas.

Let's be honest, its great BUT- Nintendo played it as safe as possible. SMB3 is one of the best games ever (#1 on the NES) and this game emulates this as much as possible without being a remake, from levels to power ups. They aren't showing that the 3DS as a console of NEW capabilities, only that it can improve/compete with the NES. N64 was a breakthough, Galaxy/Wii showed an evolution, but now Nintendo has set it/us up to expect something revolutionary. One wonders, Can they do it? Wii U?

@swss4rmy Actually, from a business standpoint launching a ton of amazing games at once is a bad call. While they all look amazing, not everyone can afford all of those great games at once, and when things like that happen people tend to forget they exist and never get around to buying them.
Thats actually why Nintendo is currently putting out about 1 console quality game a month, so people can afford it.
But I agree, the Vita's lineup is very impressive.

@CGRundertow the near a billion dollar loss wasn't because of the 3DS, yes it caused some loss but it mostly had to do with the value of the yen vs the euro. They are also working on a ton of different projects including the wii u which is costing them money as well. Sony has a bigger financial loss and they don't have a "3DS", so something is wrong there :P

Ok dude financial loss was just for a few months, don't you even recall how many 3DS units were sold in October? Enough to outsell DS units within the same amount of time (first couple of months) so I think it's doing really well right now. The price cut was for the better, the deficit will be taken care of and then some this Christmas. So don't complain about it!

Derek, the 3DS is selling VERY well. So well that it's going to outperform DS first year sales in US. It's actually selling more than what the 360 and PS3 did in their first year.

I have about 15 games, so I like a few, but I agree the choice was limited, and that put nintendo in the red a few months after launch. After Ocarina, sales began to pick up and eventually it surpassed the 360 and PS3 in first year. But before that it was sending them into the RED bigtime.

It got low sales only during 3 months (May, June and July), with about 350 units sold in US, according to NPD data. However, in August, September and October, according to he same NPD, the 3DS sold about 780k in US (starting with 260k in August). Commercial until recently? False information, bro, the 3DS sales has been great since the beginning of the semester.

I havent bought a handheld since the first model GBA. I dont play games outside the house and the small screen has always turned me off. Thankfully Nintendo game us Supergameboy and the GBA adaptor, so i've been able to experience those libraries. I wish they would make an adaptor for the DS games.

It'll probably beat MW3 by a small margin too, when it's all said and done. @PowderedxToastman That's the case THESE days anyway. It normally takes a year or two for the best games to start coming out on a console. In earlier days, consoles tended to lauch with atleast ONE killer ap. SNES had alot of it's best games released in the same year it launched. The PS1 also had a pretty good launch lineup, as did the Dreamcast and Gamecube. Other consoles like the N64 and Xbox also launched with ATLEAST 1 system-seller.
