That means that baby WAS NOT latched on properly. Breastfeeding SHOULD NOT hurt even in the beginning. When the baby has the nipple in the front part of his mouth (the hard palatte) it hurts. This is to alert you to latch baby on wider. The nipple needs to be way back in the soft palette of the baby's mouth. If not, there is practically no milk transfer. The sensitive nipple ensures that babies get latched wide enough. Otherwise the baby would quickly become dehydrated.

@MissRobinson26 That means they're not sucking properly. My baby felt like she was biting me, too. When I tried the breast pump, and found that the machine didn't hurt, but just felt like suction, I switched to bottle-feeding her my breastmilk.

@nevroth I believe that as the mother continually nurses the baby, more of the hormone (prolactin) is released, meaning more breastmilk will be made in the future. If you start early, and continue doing so, there shouldn't be any problems.
