I would so love a Tegu, but apparently before I was born *I'm 13* my mum and dad had had one, and they couldn't touch him because he was so aggressive, any way you can help with taming one? = /
so im guessing tegu isn't a good pet to have in chicago if it needs heat because when winter hits it hits hard in chicago and there is'nt a lot of hot places in my home
@jonspartan117 I really didn't know until you asked haha! I originally used "Calipso Bananero" by Harry Bellafonte but thanks to copyright had to change it and used one from Youtube related to bananas, seems to be "Bananas" by Brian Folkins-Amador, Greñudo Music (BMI)
A dish of banana like the one on this vid or a meal like in the other vid with eggs & snails, typically everyother day but she may eat any other fruit whenever she likes. She likes roaming a lot so if she wants to eat she does, if not, next day will.
Just when she found them in the garden, but when I realized I just stopped. You should try cockroaches, since in the States they are easy to get from petshops and they seem to do great, but there are not much down here in Argentina. =)
my tegu doesnt eat very well... i might have to turn him in but i doubt it cuz ive gotten him to eat egg now.. did he just start eating fruit naturally or u have to train him to eat it?.. all mine does is lik up juice and i might try mango or papaya for him
It's not very usual for them to eat fruits, the secret is that the have tp be juicy and sweet, they do the rest and with time they get used to eat them without the pre licking. =)
She is a red one, not the bright one but the brown one, the camera didnt get her true colors tho. Alive rodent make them more aggressive in most of the cases and try not handling him untill he gets used to your presence. =)
wow. a video where we actually see an omnivorous animal eating vegetaion. such a welcome change from watching sadistic videos of rats getting their heads ripped of. shines a new, refreshing light on owning a tegu. cool vid.
Haha, he looks so happy at the end basking in the sun! I've decided on getting a black and white Tegu when I've got my own place because of Juancho. Wonderful lizard.
i want one badly done research and all i found one for $55 its not a arg its the other black and white the bad adittude ones but thing is its 10 hours away or $105 for it to be shipped
Yeah you mean a Columbian, well I dont know them but didnt have good comments about them, I'd go for the Argie unless you can SEE the other one is not agressive.
The reason I ask is because I live in Southern California. In the lower desert. In the summer time it can go above 110 sometimes. In the winter it gets in the 70s and starts warming up into the 80 in late springs. I heard I could house a tegu outside because we have warmer weather. Is there any truth to that?
Yeah, temps seem right but on ouside enclosures you always have to give them some shade. The only think I can think of now is the low humidity of the desert, since tegus here in the wild live in zones with pretty high humidity, so you would have to build him a mini lake or something. =)
Yeah he,"I'm gonna get a male" will be able to free roam a lot so I'm not worry about shade. Humidity is a problem sense I live in the dry desert, but in the summer it tends to get humid but not enough for him. Did you mean like build a mini lake in his enclosure? I read you can just make a big hind box for humidity? I was gonna give him two, one for humidity and another just for a hide. I planning on make a pretty big enclosure.
That's great! He should be ok with those hinds, mine was just an idea but seems you have everything planned and that's great cause many ppl just buy them and then say ok so what now? Good luck with the building! =)
Well it depends on the space and materials you can get, the best would be a kind of plate with the material used in swimming pools so you can clean it easily, not deep but enough for him to get cooler. =)
Thanks! I was told it was a boy, but many years ago I had doubts cause of its size so I checked under her tail and discovered it was a girl actually. It was already named Juancho so she will keep that name. =)
Actually I've never heard that, but it's what I do since I feed him a varied diet: different fruits, eggs and meat, so he wouldnt eat more than once per week. =)
Thats kinda funny... The reason I got an Argentine is because its less carnivorous (my mom doesn't like having to get crickets and a freezer of dead mice lol).

Hehe! Creo does that in his own little way, so does Moiya. They all got their little ways of sunbathing...aaah I wish it was sunny and warm here right now! Such a happy tegu you got there. :)

what did you typically feed him in one sitting? and did you feed him everyday or everyother day?

A dish of banana like the one on this vid or a meal like in the other vid with eggs & snails, typically everyother day but she may eat any other fruit whenever she likes. She likes roaming a lot so if she wants to eat she does, if not, next day will.
gebris353 2 years ago
ok thanks you! what about when he has still a juvenille/hatchling?
ReptileUnicycler 2 years ago
Same routine but with one or two quail eggs instead, few snails, few pieces of banana. =)
gebris353 2 years ago
oh ok so you never fed him insects?
ReptileUnicycler 2 years ago
Now that you ask it yes, I used to feed her beetles and crickets but not much cause it dried her. =)
