Jerry Leiber (RIP) & Mike Stoller wrote the "Searchin'" that The Coasters sing at the beginning of this clip. The Del Shannon tune is called "Keep Seachin'", written by himself. @epicwinman44 is wrong.
@epicwinman44 retard its a cover smart one u look it up the coasters and del shannon originally wrote and sang this so yeaah dont call us d!cks when your not right...
Shindig was so loose and free. Way ahead of its time. The integration was shocking on network TV, shunning the angry Southern affiliates. Nat King Cole couldn't even find advertising. This was just a few years later.
The integration on this show was ground-breaking. Realize this. Don't make analysis from total conjecture.. This was virtually unique for the time.
Wonder why there were 4 girls on one side and 3 on the other? If one of the girls was off sick, the producer should have taken a second girl off to make the backing symmetrical.
@glynbrain that's what i love about watching these shindig vids; they were loose and casual, but not sloppy. It just looked like everyone was having a great time. Del looks really happy here.
a stark illustration of Toni Morrison's analysis of the metaphorics of darkness and light---"gotta follow the sun" indeed. There's a almost a quasi religious temporality here too---past (Coasters)/present (Del Shannon), black original/ white version, night / day, Coasters searchin (lost) / Del Shannon (found), etc
Ever notice that the Staler Brothers' "Elvira" was pretty much the same tune as the Coasters "Searchin' "? By the way, depite a great 50s sound, these guys were probably the strangest guys I ever met.
Amazing how many here who didn't live through it simply do not understand either artists and get all of the facts and figures wrong. For those who at least try, God bless you! All the more reason why those of us who lived through it need to be as dilgent as possible in preserving this rich history. And yes, Del Shannon's record was Keep Searchin' from early 1965, while the Coasters were singing their own Atco label single, Searchin' from late 1956. Definitely two entirely different records.
@MikeBlitzMag I know just what you mean. I used to let it annoy me but there's so much of this sort of crap around that I've learned to laugh at it. They have no idea, mixing everything up as though it all happened in one massive tidal wave of nonsense. There's too much for them to deal with. Console yourself with having lived through some wonderful times that others from a later era can only envy. I wish you peace.
you guys are wrong, both Del and the Coasters are fantastik as is most of the music from the late 50s thru the late 60s. This wasnt even my music, I was a teenager in the late 80s but I would gladly trade all the music from late 60s to the present for great tunes like this. Del is gone now probably some of the Coasters too, RIP performers of REAL music.
you ass-clown!! Del Shannon was singing a different tune,...Keep Searching is a great tune written and recorded by the great Del Shannon,....and no ass-clown he didnt kill the tune,...ChaMon Ass Clown!
The Coasters like the Ink Spots never had their group name protected and as a result so many others made their fame off of the original groups talents, i.e. The Platters.
This must have been from the TV show "Shindig" from 1965. I can tell because of the good shot composition and the multi racial presention. The producer of the show< Jack good was from England. The network started messing with the show and it got taken off. You could watch MTV all day and not see anything like this. Think about what might have been
is the part the coasters sing, the complete song, or is there a full version here on youtube somewhere(that you know about) and if so could you provide me a link?
Blacks were the original RocknRollers. RocknRoll became so popular, whites took it over because many wasn't ready for blacks to be household names, since the rocknroll title was stolen from them, blacks artists went to being called Rhythm n Blues artists, a new title for their music, when it was rocknroll. Little Richard said, whites would buy Pat Boone's version of his song to please their parents but listen to the black version when the parents was away because they want to hear the REAL THING
Blacks created RocknRoll, whites took it over but blacks started it. Black rocknroll artists put out some great songs that were copied by whites. Along with blues, jazz, swing, bebop, rhythm n blues, soul, funk, blacks created some of the greatest genres of music. Blacks are deserving of recognition for bringing the world together through the many songs and dances they created. Black artists have truly been an influence through their music. In this song I definitely hear rock, rhythm and blues.
The Coasters were super-talented musicians with a ton of hits. Del Shannon was a super-talented musician with a ton of hits. The Coasters song "Searchin" (1957) was a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT song from from Del Shannon's song "Keep Searchin" (1964). Why can't we just leave it at that? Where does all this "the black guy" and "the white guy" stuff come from? I was a teenager in the sixties, and we didn't care what color the musicians were - we just loved the music. (Del killed himself in 1990)
Well, the original "Searchin'" was out when I was in elementary school, 1st or 2nd grade elementary. Yet, we loved all the music. You're totally correct-as a young teenager in the 60's, we didn't care what color anyone was - not even on the program - just digging the sounds. If it "grooved" us, that's all that mattered.
The Coasters are awesome. I've loved them ever since I was in my early teens, when I got the "October Sky" soundtrack. Then my grandparents told me about some of their other songs, so I got a CD of their stuff and I've been hooked ever since. :)
i think it's still the coasters, without whitey in there........ i love that movie.... haha, been a while since i've seen that movie... next time you see that, wait until the end for the credits, that will tell you.
the coasters "searchin'" is a timeless classic with so much soul - who doesn't move and sing along to this still, 40+ years later? too bad the time period dictated that the image del shannon projected was more deserving of air time...it should be noted that the coasters were a truly integrated group, with leiber and stoller writing hit songs and carl gardner, billy guy, dub jones, speedo carroll, and curley palmer (in this particular lineup)
killing it with their vocal styles...please post more!
