Lobo is one of the best of the 70s and his voice is timeless. If you wanna get a good CD of him get the Best of Lobo with the blue cover ,it has his hits in LP version. Awesome music.not like the crap of today.
Sorry to dissapoint you guys but the best version of this song was song by a group called Cymarron in 1971, this version was released 3 years later. youtube.com/watch?v=Um-x9fmXQrE
I remember this song as a hit by the group Cymarron in 1971. Their excellent version is also here on youtube. It made it up to #17 on Billboard's Top 100. Great song.
Gosh, Just turned 22.. this song reminds me of shooting pool at home with my dad when I was 10 or 11. Damn the time seems to fly by way, way to quickly.
aaaaaahhhhhhh, precioso definitivamente precioso escuchar a este señor, me pone a soñar y a volar, riiiiiinnnnnng riiiiinnnngggggggg, llamando a tierra, jejjejejeej ¡TE AMO LOBO!
I loved this song growning up and didn't realize that this was a cover, so I just looked up the original (Tompall & the Glaser Brothers). Yikes! I'll take this version any day of the week over that one!
One of the most under appreciated artist of our time, his lyrics and harmonies are superb. Great post. Thanks. Lobo is a timeless talent for us all to enjoy
This is a nice version, which doesn't surprise me, because I like just about every Lobo song I've ever heard. I like Cymarron's version a little better, mostly because that's the version I heard so often on the radio in the early '70s. Thanks for posting this, mrrayjd!
I'm going nuts trying to find Lobo's version of 'A Man Named Armstrong'. My grandkids broke my Lobo album and I only had that LP of them!!! I really wanted to hear their version of the song today (which is how I discovered the broken LP). Can anyone with this song please post it on youtube? If you message me to let me know its posted I will be in your debt. Thank you!
@comedian618 I think it's down to Lobo's preference. Both he and The Allmans had Florida roots and he never let an opportunity to champion them go by. If he was putting himself into the shoes of the narrator of the song he would definately put The Allman Brothers on the Stereo and certainly not the Doobies.
@comedian618 - The Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon version says "I got Mel Blanc on the radio". I have loved this song (Lobo version) since I was a small child, and when Leo and Mike re-did it I was blown away by how different, yet the same their remake is.
I really would like to see performers like you being born again. specially with your kind of voice singing lyrics that can tought everybody hearts! too bad aint going to show up no one like you anymore. you are one of a kind! may god bless you for many years to come! walter doido from brazil.
This version is OK if you need a soothing lullaby to go to sleep. Cymarron's original version is better, it's performed better and sung with more feeling and emotion.
Thank you so much for sharing this nice song. I have been looking for this song for a very long time and finally I got it . Thanks to whoever who upload it here to share.
I live in Rio de Janerio and always will remeber when i was taking a drive along the Bica´s Beach (Ilha do Governador-Rio de Janeiro-BRAZIL) and this song was playing on a local restaurant ... It was a marvelous sunny sunday...it sounds great !!! A beautiful place and a fantastic song !!! Thanks for everything, LOBO !!!!
I agree with all of the comments so far. I'm not a fan of remakes, but this is an exception. This song is so well done by Lobo. His version is much better than Cymarron's version in 1971, mainly because I like Lobo's voice. And I agree with the other comment that I can't believe it only peaked at #43 in the summer of 1974.
@mrrayjd i didnt know this was a cover done by him, i thought lobo wrote it himself. So, I listened to the original without comparing it to Lobo's until i was done listening to it, and it's great, but i must say, Lobo did a wonderful job! Like you said, he put his personality and style into it and I LOVE IT!! the best ever!
Im 18 and I grew up listening to Lobo thanx to my dad. I absolutely adoreeeeeee Lobo. His voice and music makes me happy reminding me of my childhood :) Thanx for posting!
@gobuckeyes01 Other than his lovely voice, I think all the string arrangements somehow are much fuller, bettere and makes the song more cheerful. Should have reached the top 10s.
@gobuckeyes01 I disagree that Lobo's version of 'Rings' is much better than Cymarron's version, but I do like both versions very much. I heard Cymarron's 'Rings' when it came out in 71 and fell in love with it. Then I heard Lobo's version in74 and fell in love with the song again. I do like Lobo's ending better though.
I enjoy Lobo's version of this song but the original version by Cymarron is better. It is a tribute to the songwriters because this version comes from an album where he interperted songs written by other artists and no self penned songs

I think the key to doing a remake is to add something the original and put your own personality into it,which Lobo does in bucketfulls with this.
He did a whole album of covers, all of which sounded like they were written just for him.
