I second and third everyone who loves this cd and would not be surprised if it topped every other. von Stade deserves a mention. Her wonderful Cherubino is all over Youtube, but in arias on this CD she departs earth with the listener in tow. Those tracks alone are worth the price of the CD, and, well, the names of the other performers speak for themselves.
@codeskywalkerabs I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't wanna know. Some things are best left unsaid. I like to think it was something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. It tell you, those voiced soared higher and farther than a person in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage, and every last prisoner in Shawshank felt free.
@DoryViolet A lot of Popp and Janowitz in your selection. Guess they would be your favorite combination. Personally I would happily listen to any one (or two) of these gorgeous four. :)
as much as i love Te Kanawa... her voice doesn't 'slap' you like opera should... if you don't feel it in your toes.... then you need to listen to someone else
@Robertahausen This is not Puccini or Verdi, where you need toe slapping! To my mind there are a lot of "recent" sopranos up there. Moffo and Schwarzkopf also. Kiri is as good as any of these, even though she was not born in the United States or Europe.
BUY IT. I own it and it is fantastic. My only gripe is the way the tracks are split up; it makes no sense at all, and I think only one or two arias have their own tracks.
But oh my god it is delicious. This remains my favorite Figaro on record and anyone who says otherwise is objectively, scientifically, incorrect.
Yes, they are fabulous. Seems to me Popp elicits a tad more gentleness from Kiri's powerful voice. If i remember correctly, Kiri won a Grammy for this recording.
I was unaware of this wonderful pairing. I find that it was recorded during 1981 at Kingsway Hall, London. Several other stars contributed their parts to the album, which contained all the arias. Thanks for this superb rendition.
Naar zulke stemmen kun je uren luisteren! Heerlijk.

It's to quick and no real chemistry between the singers, in my opinion. The singing is marvellous. Try Popp and Janowitz.

I have to get the whole recording. I saw it in a CD shop once and didn't buy it. Now I'm going to go back and get it.

Totally agreed! Personally, I don't have problems with the recitatives stuck to the arias anyway... but yes,THIS IS THE BEST FIGARO ON RECORD!
