For some reason this afternoon this song came to mind and I couldn't rest until I found it on here and this version is lovely, Mathis and Streisand, heavenly. My favourite beat too, the Rumba, not that I can dance it well but great to sway and listen to.
@Jkaneshige The Movie (The Sandpiper)? Streisand's version of the theme song, or Mathis' version of it?? The Movie (The Sandpiper) was, I believe without actually looking, was filmed in 1966.
Great actress. But terrible that they broke their marriages, it was a scandal. Because of this, they didn´t receive the blessing of God. She got married 8 times (not happy) .They had a fata story, no a good sample of love, so sorry.
BRAVO this song is so beautiful. The combination of Richard, Elizabeth the Big Sur and this haunting melody is priceless. May Elizabeth & Richard be resting in the arms of the angels together forever.
Taylor and Burton both gone ... they could not survive without one another nor could they survive with. Their love was so intense it spans the ages. I hope they're together romping in the hayloft of Franco Zeffirelli's Taming of the Shrew. In that scene you could see how in love they were. It simply jumped off the screen and grabbed you.

@albertdiner , you are right, they were the most beautiful, charming and loving couple of Hollywood, despite their fights and difficulties. A great loss for movie fans, thank you for your beautiful posting.
They never recorded this song.....which is a shame really....I would love to hear an album of duets from Barbra and Johnny....this is something someone put together....
Barbra sang beautifully and Elizabeth was incredibly gorgeous, mature and fabulous woman in the movie. They both overshadowed both Burton and Mathis in the video. Two Goddesses !!!
Is there any way to download this combined song from Johnny and Barbra? I can find ones from each of them but to one that's been put together like what you've done.
@srresl1 If you want this one, you can go to one of the only legitimate websites that allows you to download youtube vids for free. "keepvid (dot) com" It will give you download options for .flv, .mp4 and a few others. If your media player won't allow those extensions, you can always download and extension converter for free. Hope this helps. I just downloaded this song as a matter of fact a few days ago, I wanted to be sure I had a saved copy of this very beautiful version of the Sandpiper
Superb editing! NPR did a piece on Johnny Mandel this morning and I got all nostalgic for his music and this song in particular -- thank you for putting this beautiful video together.
Two of my favorite singers. So much emotion beautiful song, Where did all these beautiful melodies go. I'm glad I 've been around for this sound.Would love to see these two artists in person.I should be so lucky
Barbra and Mathis, this song is an unfinished business, I can't have enough of it. Listening to it a million times does not matter to me. Thank you for putting it together; million of generations will still enjoy it. It's a lifetime performance.
@hnnjo5 If only it was that easy. Its not like it was when us Baby Boomers and those before were young. Social Networking these days does not mean catching the eye of someone across the dance floor from you; or being introduced in person in a softly lit nightclub anymore. Its all done anonymously, with pseudonyms and a photo. The magic doesn't begin from seeing the person in the flesh first and then 'working on' the getting to know one and other, and observing for those signs of compatability.
Liz had such a deep love for Richard Burton in real life, they were such close friends, and she understood him. Even years later when he died, she said there was a void in her heart! This closeness made the movies they acted in together have a special spark, they were such amazing actors! Days of excellent acting gone by, lol!

A Lovely duet. Barbra sounded her best and of course Johnnie sounding elequent, but alas they never sang this song together. Been very well placed to gether sung years apart from each other.
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of my youth. I was in high school when this movie came out. I saw this movie and I didn't care for it so much but I loved the music !
"IMHO, the very best, most original version i've ever heard hands down of the shadow of your smile is by Jonny Fair & The Xtrordinaires. Funny that you mention Mathis wanting to be like Nat Cole. In 1965, as a student at Morgan State University I was a member of the college choir. I remember our choir director, Mr. Eubanks, an operatic baritone who attended San Francisco State, commenting that, while a student there, he and others would go to a club to hear Johnny imitating Nat Cole! Go figure. Sometimes none of us is comfortable in his own shoes.
@kweju3 Excuse me, but it seems you need to be made aware that any good musician or singer will make use of imitating the pros/veterans as a means to learn and implement stylistic elements that they can later adapt to their own persona. Johnny's style is plenty "original," trust me.
@peterdewitt Ahem, not sure what planet your mind is orbiting, but the comment was meant as an insight..."even the best of us has a time of insecurity". As for what "I need to be made aware of"...that there are those who delusionally read into statements what their own muddled conscience creates. Duh, who said Mr. Mathis wasn't original?
Those were the days, eh? Liz and Dick... Lots of poetic romance. The innicence was fading even then, if you saw the picture. I could not agree more. The Jet setters of the 60's. Wow I did not know Barbra Streisand sung this song too! If you ask katie Curic she'll tell you she likes Tony Bennets version better but I like both!
Liza Minelli's father directed it. I think Elizabeth was very sultry in her role as a single artist mom. Loved The whole Big Sur Backdrop too.
This song echos back to a time when "Liz and Dick" were THE couple.
In their day they were bigger and had more press on them then Brad and Angelina, Britney and K fed and Whitney and Bobby put together.

here is a true story about Barbara - she is in the back of a driving limo. Behind is an old VW bug, racing to keep up. The limo pulls over, and the bugs pulls up behind. A 20 somthing girl gets out of the bug and runs up to the limo. She opens the door, and out walks Barbara, who I suppose is too lazy to open the door herself. Pathetic.
Liz not only was a beautiful lady... she still is! The beauty of Liz Taylor, from the very beginning was from the inside to the outside.. hence.. one of the most beautiful women ever... the Lady Elizabeth !
I HAVE IT! Absolutely stunning and genius rendition of this song. He takes it from heavenly to heaven-made. Makes me sad when I try to listen to current pop or R&B male singers.
gavinjames, yes I can hear it's two separate versions, I was just commenting to the use of the word sliced as opposed to spliced by the other poster. I've never heard of a sliced version. I have the Dave Koz CD with Johnny Mathis singing the song and Dave on sax in the background. That movie created a stir when it was released in the 1960's, it was ahead of it's time. The song did well on the radio as I remember.
This song was very popular after the movie was released, it stayed on the charts for a long time. Many people recorded it, this version by Barbra and Johnny is great.
Monrocsol, it's not a version it is sliced together?? Never heard of the term sliced when talking about how music is recorded, very interesting. Thanks anyway but I'll stick to a version myself.
the version in this youtube video is two separate versions of The Shadow of Your Smile spliced together. One version is by Barbra Streisand, recorded back in the 60's, and the second is a much more recent version from Johnny Mathis with Dave Koz.
Two living legend for a legendary song! Mathis the magic and barbra the great! Fantastic and thanks to johnny mandel the great composer of this timeless love song?
Mathis is very good, Barbra is the best, the son is beautiful plus the bossanova beat is a wonderful combination!!!!!!this music is good for ever and for all ages.........

Mr,albertdiner,I'm moved by your kindness!
Thank you very much for telling me the album's title!
I'm obtaining one and listening to it as soon as possible!

Pardon, the song is included in the johnny
Mathis CD Gold: A 50th Anniversary Celebration
Johnny Mathis. The other one I mentioned is
a greatest hits album. Both are great CDs.

I like this song, particularly the part of Johnny Mathis, very much.
Please tell me how I listen to the original song.
On Which album is the part of Johnny Mathis in this song contained?
okadahajime 3 years ago
I used the most recent version recorded by
Johnny Mathis with saxophonist Dave Koz.
It was included in the CD THE ESSENTIAL JOHNNY
MATHIS. and it was also released as a Dave Koz
cd.

Isn't that the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim in the background? I definitely recognize it. He is one of my favorites...
thanks...Lori
linlor91 3 years ago
It is not Antonio Carlos Jobim. It is a theme
from the 1965 movie THE SANDPIPER , but recorded in the bossanova beat.

Wow, Barbara is so clear with such variety in tone. What a virtuoso. Simply magnificent.

Thank you for your comments. Here we have 23 yr old Barbra Streisand singing with a mature Johnny Mathis. This is the second version of the
song that Johnny recently recorded with Dave Koz. Barbra´s voice has changed a little over the years, it is now a little hoarse. Johnny
still great in a lower tone but he is so
perfect in the phrasing of the lyrics. For me
it´s a joy to get them to sing together.

I HAVE IT! Absolutely stunning and genius rendition of this song. He takes it from heavenly to heaven-made. Makes me sad when I try to listen to current pop or R&B male singers.

Nostalgic, and how! Two great singers re an old favorite song/movie. Thanks, indeed for sharing!

gavinjames, yes I can hear it's two separate versions, I was just commenting to the use of the word sliced as opposed to spliced by the other poster. I've never heard of a sliced version. I have the Dave Koz CD with Johnny Mathis singing the song and Dave on sax in the background. That movie created a stir when it was released in the 1960's, it was ahead of it's time. The song did well on the radio as I remember.

Never over rated.
The two greatest voices of pop in the last century as picked by all pop singers and musicians from that century, and they would know.
One of the very, very best music compilations made by a Youtuber!
Thanks*******

She is so overated. Mediocre voice, a horrible nose, and if it wasn't for a Hollywood make-up artist, she wouldn't even get a second look.

This song was very popular after the movie was released, it stayed on the charts for a long time. Many people recorded it, this version by Barbra and Johnny is great.
stillgotit01 3 years ago
It is not a version, it is sliced together.
Monrocsol 3 years ago
Monrocsol, it's not a version it is sliced together?? Never heard of the term sliced when talking about how music is recorded, very interesting. Thanks anyway but I'll stick to a version myself.
stillgotit01 3 years ago
the version in this youtube video is two separate versions of The Shadow of Your Smile spliced together. One version is by Barbra Streisand, recorded back in the 60's, and the second is a much more recent version from Johnny Mathis with Dave Koz.
gavinjames 3 years ago
That is correct. It would be great if they
recorded this song in the studio as a duet.
