In a way it is a better movie with the original language. It doesn't seem as cheesy without the American dubbing. I have an old vhs video of this flick and this scene with the Templars is at the very begining ( the opening sequence ) and I think it works better like that myself.
Yeah; you can't bargain with them, you can't appeal to any emotion or intelligence because all they know is hunger. And when they've got you, you become one of them, so you not only feed them, you increase their numbers.
@Lemming013 Another factor is that Europe actually has genuine ancient castles and the like. So when it comes to scenes like this ( with historical settings ) they dont make a fake castle, like Hollywood does,.. they go film in a real one.
I could say the same for the Italian horror cinema. I think these really stand out when they're trying to make one particular scene grab ahold of you, compared to the more bloody but censored stuff these days on the straight-to-DVD releases. I mean, what's wrong with a little nudity and gore together? At least it makes us fear the director's vision even more when it comes to films.

I think it's partly a Spanish thing, the Spanish are much more upfront in their horror; have you seen Dagon?
