@360RBG Excuse me??!! "Shit." "Trash." I'd like to know how else you publicly display your total lack of any musical taste or appreciation. What's shit and trash is your comment. Please do all of us a big fucking favor and never comment on YouTube again. I KNOW you wouldn't recognize or acknowledge talent and meaning in music if it hit you full force over your thick, dead skull. That's where the real shit and trash is.
Okay. So besides all the bullshit about Letterman, can we focus on the artists?!? There are none that rival the indigo Girls. And I'm as straight as an arrow. An Indian Arrow. So there. I said it.
Just saw them tonight in Bethesda. They rock with same passion that they did in this video 22 years ago. These girls are simply amazing ! Great show tonight, Amy and Emily. Phenomenal

@tommyrock69 Look in the background at 1:25, you'll see him. The reason he isn't featured is, because if I am not mistaken, he his one of Letterman's band. One person commented that it was the worst mandolin playing ever, but I daresay a person better be a damn fine mandolin player themselves to make such a comment. It sounded pretty good to me.
Wow, thanks for that walk down memory lane. I guess 1989 really was in the 80s. It's hard to remember Emily as such the low-femme Southern lady look. And how can you not love Amy as she gets up close and personal with that mic?
to think at one time you could watch them on public access from Decatur in Atlanta, then the next show might be Rupaul or the Impotent Sea Snakes, ahhh memories
I love how he gets them mixed up at the beginning and then tries to act like he didn't haha. Basically if Emily hadn't pronounced her surname for him he wouldn't have been any the wiser and probably would have referred to one of the them by the wrong name before the interview was through. That would have amused me no end! <3 IG.
Rocking performance of this song - Amy Ray is in the zone, l'd kill for her jeans ;)
Letterman lacks confidence in speaking with women as people - it's one baby step too far, but I am grateful to his programme for inviting Indigo Girls on for inter/national exposure.
This version is even better than on the original album. They deliver the song with incredible energy and gusto. WOW! I crank up my speakers and play this over and over...
I know this was 20 years ago, but for God's sake, can a man interview women and not make them out to be little girls? How about asking something compelling, something about music, something about writing? I'm surprised he didn't ask them what hair products they use. Ugh. I'm straight, but this just bugs the &^$@ out of me. I love these women and always have.
@NatureGirl62 I'm a straight guy, and I couldn't agree with you more! He should have had the decency and respect to learn more about their background and asked substantive questions based on that knowledge. BTW, I saw them in concert in San Diego and it was one of the best experiences of my life! Unforgettable...
@NatureGirl62 : I don't know if I'd read that much into it..it looked like he just wasn't prepared for the interview, so he was grasping for things...you know, trying to make conversation and failing...it's hard...not that i particularly like him, or am trying to defend him, but it just seemed like he was taken off guard...
@NatureGirl62 Umm... sorry, not seeing anything wrong with the interview. It was nothing but a perfunctory 'after performance' chat, and certainly nothing said was offensive. I love Indigo Girls (they stole the show at Lilith Fair) and I'm generally okay with Letterman, and the girls got ON the show, which I'm sure was great for them, and they kicked ass, and as far as I can see everything is okay in the world.
@NatureGirl62 Yeahh Jay Leno does a wonderful job of that, if you watch the 1991 Watershed video. They act like they're unintelligent or something. haha it kinda ticks me off :/
@NatureGirl62 Yes they're obviously big girls, not little ones. I mean, they got the paper to prove it, right?
Then Dave goes and asks them about music, their band name, and their tattoos and tour... after only giving them 4 uninterrupted minutes or so to address the world... what a chauvinistic prick ;)
Let it go, Girl, and get yourself 'closer to fine'.
Back then, I was a Brit working in Chicago as a nanny when I saw this on TV. Bought the album the following day... been hooked since. Twenty years!!! Phew!
I love how the contrast between amy and emily is so big in this performance. Amy looks very punk-ish and Emily looks so girly and innocent. Even their guitars, amy's dark, emily's light. And When they make music together, they match perfectly. "Despite our differences" right?
Anyway, I always love to see them so young. Amy is so adorable!
Yeah...you know what? I'd pretty much bet that in the 26 or so years Dave's been doing the show none of them has actually been "live". What i was referring to was i don't need to see the band walk to the mark. I like how the host introduces the band and they open the curtain or partition or they cut straight to the band who have come out during the ad break and they rip into it, not here's the band..waiting..walking..picking up instruments....tuning...and go. So suck on that Roberto!
haha ... Letterman rules! 30 years+

Poor David Letterman. He just had no idea how to handle women who weren't being overtly sexual and pop. Indigo girls kick ass!

Got to see them at the Greek theater at U.C. Berkley in California in 92.
WOW, what a fantastic show!!
Out doors in front of 8 thousand people.
I have been to hundreds of concerts and I would list that show as one of my best.
Matches and knives, was a 15 minute jem!!
