  • wow. GI in video games... i cant believe it, because it takes like 30 seconds to render a GI scene in 3Dmax on lowest settings.

  • @Tumoxa89 That's because CryEngine 2 uses Light Volume Propogations. Its fairly bad since light leaks through objects unnaturally

3DMax uses standard Radiosity, which produces much better results. Games almost always when targeting GI use either photon mapping or radiosity. Never standard radiosity or standard photon mapping

  • @shakemyass9878

No, only CE3 uses light propagation volumes...

  • @747823 Oops, typo. I meant CryEngine 3

  • @shakemyass9878

Also, the shaders are optimized to work on the GPU which can process things faster because it's dedicated for that. There are "real" global illumination renderers on GPU already, such as the program hypershot.

  • @747823 But you aren't getting the point of truly how bad their method is, look at Enlighten Radiosity engine, or even look at my radiosity engine, they are both much better then the methods that CryTek uses

  • great video!

I am having a problem with the cryengine 2... there seems to be a limmit to the amount of entity lights. When you use more some of them are going to flicker (when you look at them from a certain angle). This is really holding me back from finishing my map. I hope you can help me with this!! :)

  • You bet I can. There's a console command that controls the maximum lights, and it changes depending on the graphic settings (low, etc). It's "e_max_entity_lights", without quotes. On Very High, it's default 16. You can set it as high as 32 (in autoexec or typed in console).

Another thing you should do is lower the view distances of the lights, making them disappear in the distance. This lets you to have more lights in a scene. You can also place fill lights in their place to keep some light.

  • ok thank you very much for you quick response! :D

i already changed the e_max_entity_lights to 40 :P but lowering the view distance is also a good idea!

    btw i subscribed!

  • Not bad at all.
