  • yikes, if he played with higher stick heights, he just might break the sticks and the pad

  • great teacher!

  • you should reverse it also... try to lead changes with the left hand

  • WOW AWESOME

  • Automatic? I like to call it autopilot.

  • If you play traditonal grip this is the guy to see. He is really amazing.

  • I love that one too. Try adding flams on the 1st stroke of each group...

  • I love that one too. Try adding flams on the 1st stroke of each group...

  • Omar Hakim used to talk about this one too.

  • you are crazy.......

  • Hah. I read "fun warm up" and I imagine that he raises a fart between every first and second stroke, but this is so harder! Thank you!

  • Peter,I use realfeel pads in my studio and at home-----I studied with Chapin who made me a PAD NUT---Ed Shaughnessy showed me a similar exercise when I studied with him.NOTE---if you place a used 13'' drumhead under your pad it will raise the pad up above the rubber snare holders on the snare stand so you don't hit them with your sticks----try it---it works!!!

  • hes a fucking expert

  • @youoob And he's an amazing drummer too!

  • Hi! Peter, Your warm-up sounds familiar. In fact, my drum instructor taught me a similar, but not exact warm-up called "Life-time Warm-ups" years ago. We however, put our own twist to it, by adding the foot on quarter notes and made the one's, with a half-time feel. I still go back to it, as a part of an overall practice and warm-up routine.

  • This is a fantastic exercise to be part of a warm up routine.

  • Thankyou Peter, an outstanding player and teacher.

He would absolutly appreciate drummings new big thing,

MMAs (ray3handssnow) just google the site. Hes changing the instrument, he just seems to have an extra gear.

  • @seneca1116

I've seen this guy, and yeah he can play 32nd notes at decently fast speeds, but that's all I've seen him do, and he's not drumming's "new big thing". There's a lot of guys that are faster than he is, plus speed is one of the least important parts of drumming, although it may be the most impressive or flashiest. Plus, you'd be surprised how fast some drummers can go, jazz drummers may seem boring and just play swing beats but they are deceptively fast and flashy if they want to be.

  • so the beginning of basic strokes?

  • I've been using this warm-up routine for the last 6 months

  • Cool. Thanks.

  • great great exercise......

  • High school marching band, 1989, our instructor taught us this warm up and I've loved it ever since. Slow to up tempo progression adds a bit more fun to it as well.

  • i saw peter with the one and only STEELY DAN in charlotte back in the '90's and it was such a treat!!! LOVE YA PETE!!!

  • So funny! Couldn't stop laughing during that one ;-P

    Actually it's boring

  • Interesting warm-up. But as a lot of pathologies come from shocks, I'm not sure it's so good to use a hard pad;

  • This man has great credentials. Doctorate from Berklee, professor at USC, and is a consultant at the Royal Academy. As well as many great recordings that will be listened to for years to come. Peter is one of my all time favorites.

  • the way he performed that was like,.....machine! :o

  • nice vid!!!

I bought a drum rudiment poster and dvd at

    DrumRudimentPoster com :) it rocks!!!

  • Look my very rare Erskine video (1980), with John Serry and Michael Sembello! ;)

  • unlike a lot of other musos and artists, drummers seem to get more graceful and continue to become more proficient on their instrument. I love the way erskine plays now, like gadd, weckl, vinnie, virgil, wackerman, beard, improve with age like a good wine, not that they were slouches in their younger days either.

  • This guy is so gentle:) His drumming is that way, so full of feel and sincerity.

  • gracias

  • I met him too at Drum Fanistacy camp 09... Going back... See you there hopefully.

  • ..this man has major credentials. Masters degree from Berklee, professor at USC, and a drum consultant at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Not to mention hundreds of recordings in which will be bought and listened to for years to come. One of my favorites.

  • You gotta be kidding me man, this is an exercise I thought of a while back!!! I started at 1 each and went up to 8 each in 16th note form playing quarters on the bass drum. Each set take up 18 beats.

  • Thanks Peter - for handing down the wisdom/technique of your teacher. I'll employ this warmup - appreciate greatly.
