USA needed a war in Asia to put a stop to USSR expansion, but this was the worst war (with the exception direct nuclear war with China) they could get :
- just going out of the french colonial empire (sadly the top leaders never listened to the general Leclerc, who knew independence was inevitable and already started the peaceful transition)
- forcing the Viet Minh to greatly depends on communist China for their war
- forcing the french forces to get more and more tanks/arty/weapons from USA

But my father lived then and my grandfather was over there as CID it was hard to fight a war when you were hated back home. Ok first off, i tip my hat to any veterans and im sorry for all the hell people have raised over your service. Was the war justified? Maybe. Was it wrong or right? Maybe. Those poorly equipped people were the enemy. did we make mistakes?yes. The american people didn't support the war so we pulled out. Sadly we did it the wrong way and didn't respect and help the returning soldiers. The true story comes from the soldiers not the media.Those odd ball things like baby killing were probably rare.

@258Delorean The media did not make the stories know of the NVA and NLF and about their terrorism and butchery of innocents just for getting aid from US troops. The war justified, I think yes, my father was there twice, but the tactics and overall strategy were not. And there were many Americans who supported the war, but support did wane as it wound down. As for baby killings, you dont hear about how the VC would put grenades on children and send them into groups of our guys

Yea, you won the battles in a very heroic way like in MyLai (forgot the naked girl running down the street?). By dropping napalm onto poorly equipped people. You fought such heroic battles that you needed averagly 35.000 bullets per kill. Closing eyes and spray and pray, very heroic!
After 2 years you were tired of war and the only solution was retreat. As the Wehrmacht in Stalingrad! There are folks you cant beat. Vietnam is one of them.

You can win every battle, but you're still going to bleed doing it, and it's legitimate to ask if it's actually worth it. Look at all those names on the Vietnam Memorial and ask yourself if you really care THAT much about who is running Vietnam at any given moment in time.

We lost that war because the NVA and VC had free reign to travel in laos and cambodia while our soldiers were not able to engage them there. Hence the effectiveness of their hit and run tactics. How dare you ever question the fortitude of any Vietnam vet. I would guess they have more balls then you could ever imagine.
