This video has some good points, however it also has some very bad information.. mostly due to the fact that the people covering the story have very little if any information security background. Up-Stream Filtering is the only way to take care of ddos, however the RioRey design would not be very effective against a mass ddos, more just a a dos attack. Nice to see people are noting ddos for a change though, seeing as its been around for over a decade. peace and love to all.

@mirco1 At a global scale, filtering up-stream is indeed the way to go. Also here in lies the problem, the scale.

You are correct on that RioRey won't protect you from a massive DDOS where all bandwidth is consume. Which is by itself harder to achieve then going for resource exhaustion option of the amount of sessions a server may handle.

If we enforce DHCP and use it the way it's supposed to be used, the botnets would have constant changing IPs, thus making it nearly impossible for any one person to obtain a list of IPs that would not change and could be contacted, forcing controllers to scan for their infected machines or wait for the trojans to contact them. In the case the trojan will send a new IP back to a server, decompile the virus, find the IP it's trying to connect to and block it from the network. There. Presto.

they only sell boxes with a 1G interface, given the size of todays dDOS attackes that seems a bit useless, I know the last few attacks we have seen were all in the 2-5 gbit/sec range which meant that even several of our 1G uplinks saturated. for a useful filtering solution it would have to do 10 gig ethernet at line-rate.
