This was just a coup. Nothing changed in Serbia, except switching out one gang of mobsters for another. The system is still the same. Otpor were just lackeys of the U.S/NATO.
@hectorbolshevik You apparently know very little about Otpor and their struggle against oppressive regime in Serbia. For years they worked hard, with very little regard for their own safety, protesting against oppressive regime - at their own expense. Serbian government certainly leaves a lot to be desired, but that can be fixed at the next election time.
@historiands: So the current Belgrade government isn't oppressive? IMaybe they're a bit more moderate, but the economical basis as well as the Serbian elite is still the same. The mafia that was in power under Milosevic still thrives now. The same thing happened in Georgia, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan. Otpor got its funds from the CIA, as did the whole "democratic" opposition. And the fact that they marched to Chetnik tunes doesn't help their credibility.
@historiands I know that lot of time passed since this comment, but i just had to reply !If ur a serb and u live or have lived in Serbia you would know that things dont work that way here,or anywhere else in the world...Elections dont ever bring any change, because politicans have no real influence on anything today, their are just good speakers, representatives of Corporate interests!Milosevic was a bad president in bad times, and he deserved to be overthrown, but you can never blame one man...
@historiands About Otpor...They started with a good idea, because life was really bad in Serbia,But the need of our people for better life was used by US goverment, and other Western Goverments for their own interests, and "revolution" came and it went, leaving things more less the same...I remember during 2000 people wanting a real change, and they really tought they where doing the right thing, but seeing Otor now, acting as a movement for "democratic" change, they just became puppets...
The October 5th was a genuine Revolution, and Otpor was a magnificent freedom loving movement. Young, intelligent people recognized what's rotten in Serbia and took action, without fear. After the proverbial rock was lifted, a lot of vermin crawled from underneath it and promptly took over almost all places of power. Pest control is going to be a long and painful process. More work for Otpor? I think so.
