@masolv1...In Pittsburgh, where Ray Brown and Roy Eldridge call home, It is perfectly normal for top notch Jazz musicians to have spontaneous Jam Sessions and the hired Trio or Quartet would serve as a rhythm section. In 1961 the two most popular venues for these guys were the Crawford Grill and the Hurricane. This trio would have backed up a very young George Benson, Stanley and Tommy Turrentine, Jimmy Smith, etc....
Man, what a line up! Great choice of tunes, everyone working well together, totally in the pocket. Man, this stuff is great, it makes me want to practice more and play in front of people more. Totally inspirational!!!
Author Gene Lees tells how during a JATP performance Oscar Peterson changed the mouthpieces on the trumpets of Eldridge and Dizzy, when no one was looking. Dizzy then picked up his trumpet, but could produce no sound at all, while Roy only managed a sort of moan.
Soft Winds was co-written by Benny Goodman and guitar genuis Charlie Christian, sometime 1939. On the recordIngs, you can hear the Soft Winds melody as bar chords on Christian's guitar, which is why I think he composed it.
Freddie Freeloader was written in early 1959. Freddie's final two bars have an A-flat substitution in place of the traditional B-flat chord, giving it Miles' unique stamp.
solo posso dire che e' bellissimo!!!questo maestro era l'icono del mio babbo!!!e' adesso anche mio!!la vita da piacevoli momenti ,ma senza musica non avrebbe senzo vivere!
The tune is called "soft winds" composed by Charlie Chrisitan and Benny Goodman. The head( melody) is 16-bars extended blues form, however after stating the head players usually improvise on 12-bar jazz blues progression.
Yes, rpool444, John is now using Ray's last instrument. But he has always used a "Ray" bass. The one he has recorded with for years was obtained by Ray for him when he was a student of Ray's. Check the recent Diana Krall in Las Vegas on YouTube. It was done in June '07 and John is playing Ray's bass.
did you know that the bass that john clayton (of the clayton hamilton orchestra) plays, is ray browns bass? once he (ray brown) died, it was given to John as a gift

"Little Jazz" - as Roy was called - showing us where Miles got his feel from....straight out of Roy Eldridge!
