The reason for the airport upgrade is firstly because the US insisted! It's to do with airport security after 9/11. - incoming and outgoing passengers must be kept apart but in the old departure area there was only a rope barrier separationg them. The Cooks has a direct link to LA and we don't want to lose it.
The second reason is that the airport, while adequate, was a bit old and dingy. Since we had to improve security I guess the Airport Authority decided to do it in style.
Nice-looking aircraft, the triple-7. I was wondering, why is the Raro airport being renovated anyway? In the many times and years I've been to Raro the airport has always been perfectly functional and adequate. I don't understand the need for all this trouble.
The big question about the new airport remains...WHY bother? The Cook Islands government is discouraging tourism thanks to its huge hike in departure tax to pay for this folly!
I noticed the airport's slight shabbyness, but it still had a friendly aura. where would the construction be by April?
