remember watching this show in the mornings while my mom and dad got ready for work, artie levin irvin sharp, reno and smiley, they would come on be fore capt. kangaroo!!
Growing up in Lynchburg during the 60s this is as close to a time machine as I can imagine....they used to play every morning M/F about 6 AM......and Irv Sharp hosted cartoons around eight- right after Cactus Joe and Lil' bitty Pete...great stuff!
My mother was from Daleville, Va and I was born in Roanoke, Va. (1947) Don, Red and the boys and Irv Sharp were all very nice men. I watched them every morn on local TV. Don said told us he started his unique style when he got out of the Army. Earl has hit it big with the three finger thing Don picked up from Snuffy so Don decided to go in another direction with his own way of pickin'. Don't understand the fussin' about Earl&Don. Got to talk with both and they really liked each other.
I remember meeting Mac Mcgaha at Opryland in 1991 after admiring his fiddling for years. His sister used to sit with us at church and begged me to go see him. I did and he let me play a song with Grandpa Jones family who he was gigging with at the time. What a memory to have. I'll never forget it.
she said he was a nice man, he seemed a little odd. he played the banjo all night and mowed the lawn at night. she said he could play though. he lived in troutville.
Oh I dunno DNewenglander, I don't think Irv had that kind of clout. In any event, I think the band does a heckava job and make the whole thing sound like a poor man's Fats Waller. That's no small compliment to their skill and versatility. Not many can genre hop like that.
Wonderful video - am looking for anyone related to Red Smiley - He waa my precious and talented Uncle who was taken from us too early. Reno and Smiley can never be replicated...

Don Reno was the 5-string banjo. Don Reno and Red Smiley were the best. William Beier

Irvin apparently had never noticed that Reno & Smiley play bluegrass when he suddenly decided to force them to play Bill Bailey.

Krogering is more fun than grocery shopping at other stores (e.g., Safeway, Giant, Acme, Weis).

I like that song, "You Comb Her Hair" Who's the fiddler?
billthorpe 3 years ago
Mac McGahae (Thats probably not the correct spelling)was their fiddler, later on he played in Porter Waggoners band for many years.
