  • Wow! You can really hear the flamenco influence. (Carlos Montoya)

  • show off hahahaha

  • Thats an axe for elite only

  • Wait...I gotta learn *arpeggios*!? Dang it!!!!!

  • Are the strings nylon?

  • I saw the John Jorgenson Quintet last week in Honolulu. Astonishing musicianship and the whole show was a blast. Check him out if you get the chance.

  • shit...he makes that look so easy.

    Stunningly Good

    Cheers

  • What a master!

  • This guy kicks ass

  • where in the hell can you find a tortise shell button.. i mean i use BlueChips and they are just as good,,,, but i want tortise buttons!

  • I've never heard a Tak sound so good LOL!

  • Just typical, the video stops att 1:51 for me.

  • Man you dont care much for good tone,do you. And that guitar sucks.

  • What a story of overcoming limitations! Django did more with 2 fingers than a generation of guitarists did with 6. Jorgenson does a terrific job with this clip. Excellent presentation!

  • that "Ultraspontane" both title and melody make my soul sing and hands shake the guitar

  • wow this guy knows his stuff eh?

  • Thank you very much for sharing.

  • how do you do that up and down whine thing?

  • I would like to see you "out phrase" this guy...lol.

  • @fatcatinthecity More like: I´m outta here! lol

  • What do they mean with a "gipsy Guitar"?? is it stolen?

  • Your guitar is really nice

In fact, i also own a Trembita guitar here is Russia =)

  • whats the name of the intro song?

  • :) i love his music

  • wow, thats incredible. Wish I could play like this.

  • tabs?

  • Very nice. I believe that if you are going to play a guitar you should get one that is better than you ability as it will make you want to play better. I also believe you need a better axe. You really sound great however; You would sound even better with a really great guitar. Good sound. Never stop playing.

  • @whybelikethat - You talking to John?

John has probably dozens of guitars. Including hand made vintage gypsy guitars.

  • Hey what is your guitar? It looks and sounds great! PLEASE tell me!!

  • its more the pick thickness and what its made of,,, the guitar is just a common cheap jap thing...you need a thick hard pick to get that sound

  • @KINGSLIDEGUITAR - actually Japan makes good guitars. It's China that makes the cheap stuff.

  • @JazzyZenBrotha

yea your right... I played violin most of my life so I missed alot...I found a jap oval hole that I played alot then sold it,, I play a gibson LC 1933 alot now its real beat but sounds great,, I have a duolian but dont like it ,,gonna sell it..

  • @KINGSLIDEGUITAR so, what should pick be made of, and what thickness shall it have to make strings sound best? :)

  • @mAcSunMood

I have tortoise, but dont use them now,,, I have been using a real thick dunlap blue pick,, its a acrylic pick,, I use it when playing , I stopped using thumpicks they are not good for real fast stuff,,I hold it between my thumb and middle finger.

someday I will post a video of that stuff.

when busking I do delta stuff people tip better

  • @mAcSunMood

hey you want to see my old gypsy guitar

I traded it for 10 russell pocket knives to Jay in south carolina,, he is playing it here on utube this is his nic JJWAMPUS

  • @KINGSLIDEGUITAR hey are you playing the Trembita Ukrainian guitar!? =)

  • dunlop 3.0mm stubby

  • I have always heard that Dickey Betts wrote "Jessica" with Django in mind, so it could be played with 2 fingers.

  • I'm amazed by how good this guy is... and how well he understands Django's style... Just great!! Don't forget he is also a Hellcaster too... A more than accomplished musician...

  • Video would have been better with John's vintage Selmer Macaferi petite bouche guitar. I think he may have been persuded to use Takimine guitar for the plug with Guitarist Mag. The strings sound way too flappy. The gypsy guitar is a dryer, crisper sound. There is nothing like silver plated copper wound stings. They bring a sweetness to the sound of the guitar. However for the purpose of introducing John Jorgenson and the Gypsy Jazz style it is fine.

  • I think he is using silver plated gypsy strings here.

I actually think the guitar sounds pretty good here, even for gypsy Jazz.

  • People are forgetting to rate this! Only reason this had a poor rating is that there are almost no ratings being done. This video offers some nice insights into Django's technique and approach.

  • this is a joke right? Emmett Ray is a character created by Woody Allen for his fictional film "Sweet and Lowdown"

  • Emmet Ray is fictional character.

  • I've never seen John Jorgensen, Brad Paisley, or Eric Johnson, but that doesn't mean I'm not influenced by each of them. Let's see you post a video on here of you and your "musical talent" playing this exact style, just so we can see how much better you are than Mr. Jorgensen. Kudos anyone?

  • I saw John do a masterclass at my college on monday. Fuck! The guys incredible, maybe he's not Bireli but his musicality and versatility go a long way towards competing. He's also a crazy good Woodwind player, maybe even better than on guitar!

  • I personally can tell that Brad Paisley is heavily influenced by John Jorgenson. Now i'm trying to find some John Jorgenson music to listen to. Does anyone know where I can find it?

  • you can order CDs from his website. "Ultraspontane" is fantastic.

  • You can also find his CD's at Amazon. When you go to his web site you can also find where he will be playing with his quintet. See him in person if you can, especially if it's a small venue.

  • Excellente leçon gypsy guitare

  • ive met john

  • What's the name of that song at the beginning with the violin?

    It's really nice!!!

  • Its called "Ultraspontane"

  • awesome guitar

  • the violinist looks just like Stephane Grappelli lol

  • he does i thought it was him

  • Musicalally he is very good, but his technique is quite reachable. Not as insane like Stochelo, Debarre or Lagrene. :-)

  • Some might say that phrasing is more important than the amount of notes you can cram into a passage; I'm one of them.

  • @guitarman63mm John Jorgenson knows more about phrasing across a wider range of guitar styles than most people know in their favorite style. Besides being a Django Reinhardt fan/historian, Jorgenson has also recorded or toured with Elton John, The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams Jr., Barbra Streisand, Luciano Pavarotti, Roy Orbison, Patty Loveless and Bonnie Raitt He is known internationally for both his tone and phrasing.

  • @guitarman63mm I understand completely, but then... Why are you here, friend? Gypsy Jazz without this style of playing is like Chinese food without rice!

  • @guitarman63mm I agree. I actually feel that trying to cram alot of notes together into a passage takes alot away from the music

  • His teacher was jimmy rosenberg..

  • nice guitar work

whats the name of the guitar :O

    greetz

  • It's one of his signature guitars. Just search Takamine JJ. You'll prolly find it.

  • who is that guitarist that he is talking about

  • Django Reinhardt.

  • Jango Fett.

He was also a bounty hunter.

  • @Sanioz Django Reinhardt, lol

  • Hats off to you John Jorgenson for your mastery of this amazing Django Reinhardt improvisational piece.

  • most just dont use a pick

  • Roma music is better

  • Comment removed

  • ...Really..!!

  • Ok, this time try it without the glove on your hand. Take 2.

  • What's the name of his guitar? sorry I'm a noob with guitars :P but I want to learn it.... and especially gypsy guitars

  • sorry, I'm stupid :P I found it... and easily hahaha

  • Name of guitar is Takamine.I just bought one :),and im starting lessons :D

  • Yeah Thank you!

it confirms what I was thinking :)

and I want one! sounds amazing ^^

  • Too bad, Road.., he was one of the most versatile players ever, though not quite as versatile as Django of course. I wasn't sure if he died or not (that's why I put the "I believe" in there - sort of was hoping he still was, but I did read recently that Les Paul is still playing clubs in N.Y. and he's

well into his 90's. Pretty amazing. Sort of the Jack LaLanne of music, huh?

  • Watch The Video Comment.. That song is played by my family.. we are also gipsy's from holland.. just watch the video.. and then you will hear the real gipsy violin. we can make the violin cry.. just watch it ;) if you watched it.. give me a comment on the video.. thanxx

  • if your a gypsy learn to spell gypsy

  • what has that do do being a gipsy? -...-

  • "Gypsy" and "gipsy" are both correct spellings. "Gipsy" is used more commonly in the U.K.

  • not true

  • If you're going to criticize how other people spell, learn to spell "you're" correctly.

  • I kid because I care, brah.

  • Respect that you try it to play it.. but whe gipsy's are the best in this music... and when i talk about the violin.. Also the gipsy's.. search on youtube.. Tata Mirando the best orechestra of the neterlands.. my family.. all gipsy's... respect that you play gipsy music.

  • Only The Real Gipsy's Can Play Our Music. Then I Talk About Rosenberg Trio Jimmy Rosenberg.. also gipsy's the best of holland.. Django Reinhardt The master

  • I think that's what 84smonkey was trying to tell you. Atkins is still around I believe and he plays some of Django's material too.

  • umm... Chet died 2001. So no, he's not still around.

  • babysyco, keeping the pick hand away is not always used by Gyps Jazzers, it depends on piece, also whether one's using an electric or not, (Django played both with equal proficiency using palm muting for the electric just like his son Babik - though Babik has never had Django's fire, he' great as well). Also, they don't only use picked notes, they use some legato as well occasionally. torres, don't know what you're saying exactly, since Django can't be seen anymore, since he's passed away.

  • John is a musicians musician! I've seen him in concert a few times and he's just an awsome guitarist and maybe a more awesome clarinetist.

  • Go rather and see chet adkins, Django or robert normann and you will see good gitar playing.

  • Atkins anyway...

  • What scales are used in the gypsy style

  • I think minor scales, major scales and diminished scales. I've only started learning a bit of gypsy guitar from a book I got which was learning how to play gypsy jazz guitar by John Jorgenson. Look out for that book it comes in dvd and cd it's worth buying.

  • mostly arpeggios, also with added tones, eg Django used alot of arpeggios with the 6th or 9th added.

  • Playing guitar for 15 years and just totally re-inspired by this man. Such a privilege to hear someone combine charged emotional intensity with such technical proficiency.

And I just learned he is coming to my towen of Juneau AK next month. Yay!

  • John and Stephan!!!

Two really great musicians and people!!!

  • Sorry, and YOU are?

John is respected in Samois by some of the best Gypsy players in the world. Love to see your 'Selmer' by the way.

Also Jazz came from America by the way.

    Dufus

  • chill homie *passes u the joint*

  • You are such an idiot! 1st of all, who cares where he comes from?? 2nd, He never said that intro was gypsy. 3rd, If you ask Debarre (who actually IS Gypsy) about HAVING to get a Selmer in order to play Gypsy Swing, he would slap you in the face! I'd like to hear YOU playing. Get a life bitch!

  • I dunno about gypsy jazz, but I like this vid and I learned a few things from watching it.

Cool playing, regardless of whatever label folks put on it.

  • Why don't you go make another video of your cat sleeping. That's a real talent you got there. Pathetic.

  • That's a reply to "lordkazama86".

  • I saw him live in a small venue in New Harmony, IN. It was great...he played Nuages of course...he'll never beat Django though!

  • Such lingo!!!

JJ is a great player but I'll always listen to Django for gypsy jazz.

  • A guitarist once told me gypsy guitarists play in the PHRYGIAN mode or scale,I think in standard tuning, I aways milk one string for all it's worth, then ascend or descend to the next and try to cobble it all together, a memory comes in handy, like Jimmy Page said,it's all MATH when you break it down.

  • I think you might have flamenco in mind. Gypsies are everywhere and everywhere they are they have a distinct culture. The Andalusian gypsies (they play flamenco) do use the phrygian scale and get that Spanish character. However, gypsy jazz is COMPLETELY different.

  • is that using harminic minor scale? im a british guy wondrin how u get that cool sound?

  • Guilty as charged. Hey, we'll trade you Bush, Cheney, and the whole administration for Amy Winehouse. We'll even throw in a bucket of KFC. Deal?

  • This was a reply to harryspoonpotter.

  • teeth? the best u can do is teeth? with the whole of the history of britain to try an pick holes in, you went for teeth...

  • Fine I'll go for the ol' "We-Beat-You-In-The-Revolutionary-War!" chestnut. Damn Redcoats....can't fight for shit.

  • 3 words DAMN HE'S GOOD!

  • i must say i am not into gajdos preaching how to play gypsy jazz

the only way to learn is practise not whaching videos

  • This guy sucks. What kind of sissy plays with four fingers on the neck? Django played this with two fingers....

Just kidding -- you should check out his electric stuff with "The Hellicasters" He's pretty amazing!

  • you're a real Gajdo you fucktard. john jorgenson is right up there with stochelo rosenberg even joscho stephan. fuck off if you don't know what you are talking about.

  • fucktard...LOL!!!! Funny these youtube diatribes and battles. John Jorgensen is a phenomenal guitarist; however, there is a noticeable difference between the way Stochelo and Jimmy Rosenberg play that last improvisation piece #1 by Django... the last tune in this clip.

  • Wait a minute, how is SleepyGypsy a real 'Gajdo' you say it as if you were insulting him... do you even KNOW what a Gajdo is? it means American, or other then Gypsy. I agree with tsbrandon, but why would you say "you're a real Gajdo you fucktard."

  • thanks, very informative

  • what's the name of the song at 4:22?

  • "Manoir de ma reves" (means: house of my dreams) AKA "Django's Castle. The next one is Improvisation no 1

  • Thanks very much for posting this!

  • Standard tuning - just highly gifted both on woodwind and guitars - simply a really nice guy. Just like Albert Lee - unassuming and generous to a fault in sharing and explaining.

  • Is it standard tuning? at 5:10 he plays everything open and it seems to be standard tuning...?

  • yes, it's taken from django reinhardt's improvisation number 1.

  • "a lot of those *plays the guitar".....and then lots of this *plays the guitar" and the *plays the guitar* are also played."

oh man, the guy should also be able to talk about that stuff he's doing. :D

  • He's assuming that his audience has ears and can hear what he's playing. Why try to put it into words when you can just play it? That's how music is transmitted in oral cultures. It's a far superior pedagogical approach compared to Mel Bay books.
