  • I've been doing a car audio blog for a little while now and much of it has been about sound damping. In my experience, and based on my casual research and conversions with experts, it's generally the consumers who are wrong. There is some poor information coming from manufacturers, but the biggest companies with the premium prices aren't out to rip people off. I don't believe every Second Skin product's claims, but their CLD is worth every penny.

  • You glued 3 lb weights to your trunk, ROFLOL! Yeah, that works but it's fugly as all heck. That's why people buy deadening mats: it's hidden under your upholstery and trim. And in places where you have raw, painted metal, it doesn't protrude too far from the surface. You might think you're giving valuable advice to car audiophiles, but all of this has been talked about and rehashed over and over again since the early 90s.

  • dude where did you buy the drank? i used to be sponsored by them for skateboarding but i lost contact with them and havent been able to find it since

  • Intelligent dude. Hes right about adding weight. Take a 1" nut and glue down with epoxy in the middle (and on the backside)of a panel and it makes alot of difference. Cool vid

  • Lot of info in this video., And a lot of info that is wrong. He clearly has read up on the products or browses forums for info but he's seriously misinformed on how some of the products work and why they are developed for specific applications. Second Skin makes more products than just Damplifier and each one is tailored to blocking a specific type of rattle/noise. There is no be-all-end-all noise blocking product that exists. It is a mix of multiple products to block multiple sources of noise

  • @Mixamaximus Thanks for the good comment. I've learned a lot since I made this video and it probably deserves a update.

  • such an idiot...

  • there is a lot of good info in this vid.

  • @joestl314 It's not a theory but a proven method of reducing/controlling vibrations and panel resonance. Todays top performing products behave on this so called theory. This is why Damplifier for instance is extremely effective product, yet weighs in at less than 6 ounces a square foot. And why we don't see people (at least the sane ones) loading their doors and trunks full of concrete.

And we all know sound proofing a room and sound deadening a vehicle are two completely different beasts.

  • Viewers,

As this video continues to grow in popularity it will ulitimatly attact some negative attention. Recently a rep from what I assume is Second Skin suggested that this video is full of misinformation. Is it really? Of course not. Let's remember that his entire business is based on misinformation and convincing people to buy his product. Ask yourselves, who are you going to believe; a car salesmen, or a guy who's owned the car and was nice enough to make a video about it.

  • @joestl314not trying to sell a product, simply want to provide people with the most accurate information about sound deadening. If you take offense to my posts, please remove them or block me.

Dynamat, Second Skin, and most other high quality CLDs do not just add mass to lower the resonant frequency of the panel. If this were true, companies would have came up with a 5 pound per sq. ft. peel and stick mat.

Again I apologize if I seem harsh. Feel free to drop me a line if you want to discuss...

  • @SSRepJon No worries. Just back up your opinions with facts and evidence. I want people to know the truth. If I'm wrong please enlighten all of us. Just back up your info.

  • Wow... Very good points. I have more ambient road noise and exhaust drone than anything. Was going to order Rattle Trap for the floor, but I've still got a bit of research to do so my deadening project will be as effective as possible.

  • Thnx man, Great vid. You saved me from a lot of future headaches and let downs. I just want my 95 ls400 to be as quiet as possible in regards to road noise. I was told the factory noise damper was old and should be replaced. I now know how to approach it 10x better because of this

  • w7's suck big fat cock and are way over priced

  • @basshead640 w7's don't suck and per size, they offer the most displacement to date than any other sub of the same size. Displacement being cone area multiplied by excursion. For example a 13w7 has almost the same displacement as an 18" sub but will require a much smaller enclosure. So essentially you get the same output, in much less space. The retail price is a lot I agree but used w7s can always be found. The used prices on w7s are very fair IMO.

  • @afanofdeftones Lol the SA-12 has an xmax of 19mm one way, IDMAX 24.6mm xmax, DD3512 80mm, fi Q 28mm xmax and I'm sure there are many many more woofers out there with a greater or similar xmax as a W-7

  • man i have a jl 15 inch sub in the trunk of my malibu and i took my spare tire out and cut fiber glass insulation sheets and lined the bottom and then stuffed the rest full of poly fill pillow stuffing full and screwed the top back on ,

my system is sounding better then ever :) sooo deep and loud and no rattling,

i also stuffed my sub box with polly fill...

  • If I"m wrong about something please mention them in the comments.

  • @joestl314 Another solution to rattles. mostly to do with the trunk is a high density foam or if you can find it, thick gel pads on the joints. like banging a rock against a pillow instead of another rock

  • dude that expression of subs he did with his voice was pretty damn close lol

  • Do you think Grace Ice & Water Shield HT can be an effective alternate to dynamat/secondskin?

  • @mkeets Ive done roofing for 10+ years and grace ht is not coming off metal once it is on the other cheap brands can. That being said it does not have the metal backing and I would not suggest ANY roofing material as a sound deadener. I also used the stuff with the metal back and its not the best idea. This guys speaking skills are not that great but he has some sound knowledge and advice.

  • Besides the twitch very good video

  • any cheap alternatives to dynamat that arent asphalt based like peel n seel?

  • @420HighAllTheTime420 SecondSkin Damplifier is priced considerably and works well compared to Dynamat or you can look at FatMat

  • You Legend! Make more learning videos please. You have helped me understand the real facts of sound deadening

  • The thing is peel and seal is used of roofs, a roof in the summer is gonna be just as hot as a car would be if not hotter, so why wouldn t peel and seal be able to handle the heat?

  • HAHA that was a crazy fart at 2:40! Great info BTW

  • good info

  • HELL NAW ! AM NOT SKIPPING IT !! watched it all the way

    BIG THNX MY MAN

  • Great video thanks for the info!

  • thanks for the info :D

  • Comment removed

  • Damn, glueing weights on... Actually a pretty good idea. Don't know how you thought of that haha

  • does close cell already come with like a sticky side to it? and if not what glue do you recommend??

  • Nice info there. I was thinking of going for the roof deadening type, but after watching ( and listening to) you it really isn't the way to go. Again, thanks for the info!

  • Great idea. How about just put some magnet on the panel to add weight?

  • @Neversnitch78 I have a mild case of Tourette Syndrome and it causes me to have weird facial expressions. I'll be nice and preemptively accept your coming apology because I refuse to believe that someone would resort to throwing random insults on the internet. Oh how low your self esteem must be. Good luck kind sir. :-)

  • @joestl314 NOw i bet that idiot feels shame. I dont get it. I can be rude sometimes, but why the hell would i point out something in NOOO relation @ all the the vid?(maybe b.c have seen ppl with tourettes). Its like in every comment section there is some insulting comment haven't nothing to do with the info trying to be passed on lol We have to do better people. life is too short!. shesh

  • @Darkdemonoflite Thanks for the support. I'm guilty of throwing insults in comment sections, but at least I'll have some creativity. I would have given the guy some credit if the insult would have been funny or clever......but instead he decided to take the retard route. lol

  • @joestl314 LOOOL didnts see that coming!

  • thank you sir. great video.

  • 2:42 lol

  • @spededdie

BAHAHAHAHAH that was the scariest face ive ever seen

  • Very good video, answered all my questions. THANK YOU!

  • thanks for this video, i was gonna try peel and seal, but living in texas with 100 degree weather in the summer i think i'm gonna pass on that.

  • Thanks for the video. I just bought the peel and seal stuff yesterday but never installed it. I'm just going to buy the real stuff to play it safe.

  • reinforcement.....

  • test

  • Joseph, buddy whats happenin....you keep mentioning the W7. I have heard two W7's ran off the Zapco 4Kw cube. So I cant agree with you on finding something better. I have heard most all brands pushed to their limits, and I have heard nothing come even close to the W7's.

  • @Ian2lo4u2c W7's are great subs but there is better. A Tc Sounds/Audiopulse LMS ultra blows the w7 out of the water.

  • @joestl314 Tc Sounds = pretty nuts. Until someone makes me a believer, I have to go with what I have seen. This W7 set-up was planned with perfection. A lot of systems pumpin 4-15's were put to shame with this config. Of course the 15's may have been better. However, when 2-13's drown out your sound... its gotta be embarrassing.

  • @joestl314 Geat video Cockhead !

  • @Ian2lo4u2c have you heard CM casted Mojos?

  • @diverseent Actually no.....but my latest install, I went with a DC lvl 4. As far as impressing the crap outta me, this is the new favored sub IMO.

  • I concur

  • i love ur car audio vids.. but can u plz increase the mic input volume when make vids @ home.... keep up good work

  • Great info. Thanks.

  • My friend could use this vid. Great info

  • Thanks for the video

I hate reading comments from people who don't know anything about what they're talking about but spew incorrect information everywhere

So an example of closed cell foam, is that like Polyethylene?
