I guess this is where Martin Scorsese got his ideas for the cut on the photo flash he uses in many of his films including Goodfellas and The Aviator...
@thishereguitar 2001...my favorite flick. I'd have to agree that flipping through 4 million years of human history in 7 seconds is pretty damned awesome. Good call!
@DjBEandip Oh yeah, no argument. And what katinaanimator said, there's tons of great edits in this film. Among other things, Sir David Lean was a great editor (and filmmaker) and this one cut just always sticks in my head. Good call on this one!
Among the finest films ever made. But, gee... isn't the cut from lit match to slow sunrise equaly great?!? The surprise that he's blowing it out instead of pinching it between his fingers is imposed on the visual beauty at that same moment. Of course, your right that all art is subjective.
that is a nice edit - and i personally can t think of anyone who did it before lean did this film,im not a film historian by any stretch but have seen quite a few flicks!
i always laugh when that guy at 0:39 says "who but they"

This is a very good cut. The best in film history is in 2001 from the bone to the spaceship.

What? come on, it's good. I think the match blowout to the arabian sun is the best in the movie

There are SO many great edits in this movie, literally DOZENS. David Lean clearly knew well in advance how he would segue from sequence to sequence.
