The Record is Tipperary March Played by the Edison Concert band. What is interesting is that cylinder records are not actually awax, but rather a metallic soap compound. Black wax is Aluminum, zinc and copper sterates, sodium sterate, pine tar, ceresine lampblack, and caranuba wax.
the orchestra was the Edison Concert Band, but i couldn't catch the name of the tune. My guess (according to the sound quality of the recording) is that it was recorded in the very late 1890s - maybe even around 1900.
look on amazon- I got a victrola (the one with the horn that plays 78's) for like $200.00 it's a reproduction but it's still cool. Plays really well, you have to wind it up. It's funny to listen to when it starts winding down!
I own a Edison Standard Phonograph with a four minute reproducer, and I was simply thrilled and delighted with my Edison phonograph.(I own several talking machines as well). These are truly wonderful phonographs to own and enjoy. To Coondogtheman1234, you shouldn't scoff these until you own one. To Anthony, Great short clip video of seeing this in operation. Truly a beautiful phonograph to listen too. Keep up the great work!!
If it wasn't for these, we wouldn't have vinyl players and in turn we wouldn't have digital players. The mechanics and the ideas that have gone behind these machines of old is fascinating.
To coondogtheman1234: Since when is the IPod remotely considered a phonograph? You youngsters nowadays don't appericiate fine antiques nor that of old music. Try prying yourself away from your IPOD technological blunder for once and you might be amazed at what you hear from an Edison wax cylinder phonograph or even the Edison diamond disc phonograph. To Anthony: Well done! I enjoyed watching the video clip, keep up the great work.
@josette76 I'am fourteen and have a large interest in these machines! I have been a phonograph collector for sometime and have a very nice collection! I don't even have an Ipod and I don't wan't one! I have an Edison Amberola 30, Edison Standard model A, Edison Home model A, Victor VV-VI, and some other outside horn disc phonograph that has proven to be unknown even with intensive research. I also have about 110 two and four minute cylinder records and about 30 disc records. Happy collecting!
Edison invented the phonograph in 1888. For a number of years he submitted updates to his patent. Our model is a 1903 Edison Home Phonograph. In time competitors started making phonographs incorporating improvements like a bigger horn, flat vinyl discs and placing the horn vertically rather than horizontally and enclosing it in a cabinet. It was during this period that Radio Corporation of America (RCA) started making models such as this and used the trade name RCA Victrola.
Ummmm, like the video stopped before the song did...

thanks for sharing, I always wanted to see one in action. Maybe 100 years from now people will be amazed when they see an mp3 or cd player working.

back when these things were all the rage music was just released as single songs right? like no albums, each cylinder just had one song on it

It's a black wax cylinder, which puts it between 1903 & 1910. Cylinders in the 1890's were brown wax.
