The reason that their live performances differ from their recordings is because of two things:

1. Recordings are done with Sawao singing only, then playing guitar only. the tracks are then played over each other. Live, he has to divide his attention between keeping rythm AND singing the right notes. This is rather difficult for anyone playing a non-syncopated rythm (the pillows songs are mostly asyncopatic).

2. Sawao is now 39 years old, and has been singing for almost 19 years. His voice is strained.

Haha, keep in my mind that Sawao is pushing 40, this video is 11 years old. He was in his late twenties/early 30 back then. I think his voice has changed since the turn of the century.

In a lot of live performances, Sawao's singing voice is awful for some reason. I think it's because he's trying to sing louder than he's capable of or something. There's even a few traces of it here on this video, but as a whole it's good.
