I have a 2004 Civic with 292,000 kms on it. Except for regular maintenance, it has never back to the dealer or any other mechanic for breakdowns or repairs. I did have the release cable for the gas cap filler replaced, but that is it. No need for childish arguments of this car vs that car, the facts and numbers are around for anyone to check...problems per 100 vehicles numbers, long term reliability etc...Honda Civic fairs better than others, so does a few other cars

I test drove several cars including the Cruze, and 2012 Civic and ended up going with the Cruze. no question the Cruze is a better car. GM quality is going up, Honda's is going down fast.
@realtv1982 We have a 1998 Durango with 278,000 miles on it. Not a single problem. Just regular battery and oil changes. MOST of the time, its how cars are maintained, no built. Any car can be reliable if taken care of properly.

But the only reason they're getting better is because "american cars" are including japanese content in their cars nowadays. At least theses "american automakers" need to give credit to these countries for helping them produce better cars.

I'm getting 40mpg on our Eco. It's every bit as tight as our various Asian imports in the past. As far as bailouts go, the foreign countries have actively subsidized their auto industries for decades. Do some research into it. Japan and Germany especially. If the car doesn't hold up over time, I'll be the first critic...but as of now, I'll take the Cruze over our 2009 Civic or 2010 Mazda.
This is bogus because they are government rated at 36-42 mpg on the high way car makers pay off consumers to give there cars better rateings than other cars they also hire people to go work for consumers and give other cars bad ratings all of this can be seen when looking at the Toyota recall where consumers testers experienced unintended acceleration and said nothing until after people got into car accidents got hurt or killed just because Toyota payed them to say nothing
I just heard on the news that chevy is having a recall on these cars due to steering wheel coming off while driving or something like that. That's very dangerous if you ask me!!
@GBraidi78 it is still a minor issue. Cruzes around the world never experienced steering falling off from the car. Hopefully GM solves the problem in prompt and correct manner.

i've had the LT for 2 months..i drive 115miles per day mixed driving and heavy traffic..i am averaging 36-39mpg..which is awesome because my other car is an Escalade which averages 16mpg..and the cruze is very quite too..the bad thing is that it has no power to merge on the fwy..engine is not geared for it..otherwise it's a cool car..
my friends mom sold her hummer h3 to get this its a nice car and turbo charged she said the mpg was like 30 mpg thas good im just sad the hummer is gone
I test drove a Cruze yesterday and didn't find it to be that big of a deal. The steering wheel on that cross part looked to be painted plastic and when I stepped on it a bit it's like there wasn't much there at all. I wouldn't rule out getting one but after doing lots of research on it I thought it would be more than what it was. It could be the my expectations were just way too high. It happens.

What is remote start useful for? Oh I don't know. How about hitting a button from in your house or inside at work and then when you are ready to leave, your car is nice and toasty instead of shivering in it until the engine gets warm.
OMG..... I get tired of companys like GM changing the name of a vehicle. I completely disagree about CR being in the back pockets of the Japanese (or anyone else). I've been reading CR since I was a kid and the fact of the matter is that Japanese cars got good marks because they were BETTER cars. Anytime GM has built a GOOD car, CR has given them good reviews. Man I took this thing for a drive last week and it was horrible. The Turbo was only 2 hps more than the normal aspirated motor lol what a joke, why would Chevy do such a thing. I bought the Hyundai Elantra instead. The elantra was faster, smoother, had more options and is better on gas. Typical Chevy product, will be in the garage in less than 4 months. I won't buy another Chevy again...ever
@cnauta70 The turbo has a smaller displacement of 1.4 and that's why it's only 2 hp more, the base is 1.8 non-turbo. So yeah given the size difference it's gonna be about the same and the engine will be good on gas when the turbo isn't spooling. And the turbo has more torque which can be as important as horsepower. I bought a Hyundai Accent 4 years ago and I'm on my 3rd battery. So I'm going from Hyundai to Chevy soon. Good luck with that Elantra you're gonna need it.
GM has a poor track record for long term reliability so it is going to take 10 years or so to see if GM has changed sorry GM this is to littile to late!!!..come on people im sure im not the only ex GM owner that has been burned by GM...They look good and drive good at first but put some miles on them and they loosen up! head gaskits start going...trannys start to fail...and so on and so on......

I got a Cruze last week to take back to college since I had a 2010 Ford Focus that was essentially toothpicks wrapped in tin-foil. I have to say, I adore this car. It's heavy, but is so quick and easy to maneuver. The interior is so awesome, and the quality is such a nice change from my Focus. Granted though, I had an SES Focus, which was pretty much basic plus a rear spoiler, and I have an LTZ Cruze, which is the loaded one.
I'll just respond to the "inexpensive car and felt like it" comment: So.... you get what you pay for... $9000 should not feel like $30000. I drive an older Cavalier, it starts, it drives, decent on gas, it survives. That's all I wanted. Not to mention, Cavaliers have an incredible knack for not getting stuck in deep snow ;). Huge plus for me!
This car looks pretty nice but it would look even better and more "expensive" looking w/ HID headlights. I dont understand why domestic car makers have been so slow to put these on their cars aside from the Ford Fusion & Cadillacs.
I seen one of those at the dealer boy what JUNK. The whole dashboard flopped around with a little pressure. The doors have an awful racket to them, and the panels rattle. GM sure isn't proving anything.
The Cruze needs Z Spec or an SS 2.0 Turbo or a 2.0 to go from 0-60 in less then 6.2 sec. to beat the market leader Honda. With Paddle shifting would be nice in the automatic and an optional 6 sp MT.

Whomever is vetting these comments, I am constantly amazed that American manufacturing is doing even as well as it seems to be doing, which is not very well. Aren't you? To wit...
uh that eco tech turbo motor is made by daewoo, it is similar to the one found on the chevy aveo's deowoo eco tech 1,6L motor and the aveo's engine has the worst review, i dont think this chevy cruze will make it for long. actually the cruze is basically a rebadged 09 daewoo lacetti from China.
A good car, and a step in the right direction for GM. However turbos as notoriously unreliable, which is why most japanese manufacturers avoid them. Older cars like ford probes had major problems with their turbos. But that was then, this is now, maybe they can built em better these days.
The theory that turbocharged engines are more economical is pure nonsense. More air pumped into the cylinders needs more fuel to avoid running lean. The fact that a 1.4 L engine is turbocharged does not make it any better than a 1.8 L regular engine. In fact, turbos are notorious for breaking down because of coking (carbon building up on the bearings).
@happy543210 Turbos don’t build boost at crusing speeds so you would be getting the benefits of the 1.4 efficiency a large majority of the time. Give in enough gas to build boost and yes efficiency goes down, but his car only makes 138 HP and you don’t need much fuel for that. Also any decent turbo properly maintained which is pretty much just oil changes will last well over 100k miles. It’s not uncommon to see them go closer to 200k. .
Btw to all of you guys saying toyota this and honda that... remember the recalls from toyota, and BTW Honda had a bailout from their Jap Government. So dont say crap about GM. The Japanese import crap is finally getting flushed down the toilet. Toyota is #1 right now..... but not in a good way, did you know they have the most current complaints, and before them it was ford, and Kia, and .... well... hasnt been Chevy for YEARS!!! I sell the Cruzes and I was VERY skeptical when I started selling Chevys 2 years ago, I rode it out with them through all the troubles, and man oh man I am glad I did. This car is a great car!! World class, best interior, best gas mileage, most room inside and power windows, ac, power locks, navigation, XM radio, OnStar, Remote Keyless entry for under $17000! Great buy, seriously. Ive sold civics and corollas, they dont come close to this lil beast. Everyone is talking about chevy now!Way to go!
I drove the loaded $24,400 model today...very solid feeling and smooth stable ride, good handling and comfort. Performance was great too. Trunk is huge.
honestly there's nothing great about the cobalt. i love gm, but working in a service center, i see too many cobalts coming in with the same common problems. chevy's first attempt at really creating a reliable small car failed, but i think the cruze has great potential...

ONce they get around to their phantom road test ratings it will place WELL below the Corolla, Civic, Sentra, Lancer, etc. -this is still CR. No American car will ever be ranked higher than an established Asian branded car. They will come up with all kinds of complaints about this once its tested.
Nice review but it will get rated much lower than the Japanese competitors when they test it and of course it likely wont be reliable according to their subsribers. Nothing ever changes with regards to CR and their view of American cars. The assign phantom ratings and American cars always end up with the lowest scores on average.

@miraclue Are you serious? Do you live in a place that is a comfortable 70 degrees all year old? Remote start is extremely useful in the winter if you live in a place that has cold winters. What is remote start useful for? Oh I don't know. How about hitting a button from in your house or inside at work and then when you are ready to leave, your car is nice and toasty instead of shivering in it until the engine gets warm.

OMG..... I get tired of companys like GM changing the name of a vehicle. First we have the Cavalier,it gets replaced with the Cobalt,now it is replaced with the Cruze.I can hardly wait 5 more years to see what they replace the Cruze with....lets stick with the letter "C" how about CRAP.Honda is on its 9th generation Civic ....like it or not when you hear the name Honda Civic you know it is a reliable vehicle that 20 years from now will still be called the Honda Civic !!!!!

Also, my previous 2005 Corolla had an engine fail after 32,000 miles, with proper service! Meanwhile my old 2000 Buick Regal keeps running like a Swiss watch, with 260,000 miles!. I'm never buying Jap-Crap ever again! I think I'll buy a Cruze to avoid headaches. Although I could use a Malibu. I think the Cruze is here to stay...

I completely disagree about CR being in the back pockets of the Japanese (or anyone else). I've been reading CR since I was a kid and the fact of the matter is that Japanese cars got good marks because they were BETTER cars. Anytime GM has built a GOOD car, CR has given them good reviews. What do you expect them to do--give good marks to a crappy car just so they can say they were being fair?

Man I took this thing for a drive last week and it was horrible. The Turbo was only 2 hps more than the normal aspirated motor lol what a joke, why would Chevy do such a thing. I bought the Hyundai Elantra instead. The elantra was faster, smoother, had more options and is better on gas. Typical Chevy product, will be in the garage in less than 4 months. I won't buy another Chevy again...ever

@cnauta70 The turbo has a smaller displacement of 1.4 and that's why it's only 2 hp more, the base is 1.8 non-turbo. So yeah given the size difference it's gonna be about the same and the engine will be good on gas when the turbo isn't spooling. And the turbo has more torque which can be as important as horsepower. I bought a Hyundai Accent 4 years ago and I'm on my 3rd battery. So I'm going from Hyundai to Chevy soon. Good luck with that Elantra you're gonna need it.

I got a Cruze last week to take back to college since I had a 2010 Ford Focus that was essentially toothpicks wrapped in tin-foil. I have to say, I adore this car. It's heavy, but is so quick and easy to maneuver. The interior is so awesome, and the quality is such a nice change from my Focus. Granted though, I had an SES Focus, which was pretty much basic plus a rear spoiler, and I have an LTZ Cruze, which is the loaded one.
Basically, I'm in love with my Cruze :)

I'll just respond to the "inexpensive car and felt like it" comment: So.... you get what you pay for... $9000 should not feel like $30000. I drive an older Cavalier, it starts, it drives, decent on gas, it survives. That's all I wanted. Not to mention, Cavaliers have an incredible knack for not getting stuck in deep snow ;). Huge plus for me!

I seen one of those at the dealer boy what JUNK. The whole dashboard flopped around with a little pressure. The doors have an awful racket to them, and the panels rattle. GM sure isn't proving anything.

The Cruze needs Z Spec or an SS 2.0 Turbo or a 2.0 to go from 0-60 in less then 6.2 sec. to beat the market leader Honda. With Paddle shifting would be nice in the automatic and an optional 6 sp MT.

uh that eco tech turbo motor is made by daewoo, it is similar to the one found on the chevy aveo's deowoo eco tech 1,6L motor and the aveo's engine has the worst review, i dont think this chevy cruze will make it for long. actually the cruze is basically a rebadged 09 daewoo lacetti from China.

A good car, and a step in the right direction for GM. However turbos as notoriously unreliable, which is why most japanese manufacturers avoid them. Older cars like ford probes had major problems with their turbos. But that was then, this is now, maybe they can built em better these days.

The theory that turbocharged engines are more economical is pure nonsense. More air pumped into the cylinders needs more fuel to avoid running lean. The fact that a 1.4 L engine is turbocharged does not make it any better than a 1.8 L regular engine. In fact, turbos are notorious for breaking down because of coking (carbon building up on the bearings).

@happy543210 Turbos don’t build boost at crusing speeds so you would be getting the benefits of the 1.4 efficiency a large majority of the time. Give in enough gas to build boost and yes efficiency goes down, but his car only makes 138 HP and you don’t need much fuel for that. Also any decent turbo properly maintained which is pretty much just oil changes will last well over 100k miles. It’s not uncommon to see them go closer to 200k. .

I sell the Cruzes and I was VERY skeptical when I started selling Chevys 2 years ago, I rode it out with them through all the troubles, and man oh man I am glad I did. This car is a great car!! World class, best interior, best gas mileage, most room inside and power windows, ac, power locks, navigation, XM radio, OnStar, Remote Keyless entry for under $17000! Great buy, seriously. Ive sold civics and corollas, they dont come close to this lil beast. Everyone is talking about chevy now!Way to go!

Nice review but it will get rated much lower than the Japanese competitors when they test it and of course it likely wont be reliable according to their subsribers. Nothing ever changes with regards to CR and their view of American cars. The assign phantom ratings and American cars always end up with the lowest scores on average.
